Re-records Vol II

There is much clamoring from fans on Journey's Official site about doing another three disc album package. What say you?
After seeing Glee bypass the original DSB on it's way to the top of the UK charts can we honestly say another disc of retreads will defile the legacy in anyway? Perry had to be pleased with the amount of coin he got from Revelation and he never once came and said anything negative about the idea so I don't see any worries from the loon camp there. With the the success of Glee's cover Perry actually seems to be embracing the whole concept when you read his comments about the show. Should Journey try to get some of the Glee Love and do some re-records with new arrangements or just stay away from them all together now? Also are covers more popular when someone else is doing them?
The other side of the coin; Should Journey do what the Eagles did, two discs of new material and see if some big box store will do the distribution for them. Would Wal-Mart agree to a deal featuring a disc of Grade B Hits from Journey?

Share your thoughts please.

After getting an opportunity to hear the "Re-Mixed" Classics by Foreigner in their Can't Slow Down package, I was very impressed.

The clarity and depth in these re-records is impressive and as great as the original Journey tunes are, it would be awesome to hear a similar product from them, utilizing the ORIGINAL RECORDINGS (i.e. instruments and singing) as did Foreigner on their project.

I think Kelly Hansen has the right attitude when he says there was no need for him to thrust himself into their re-records.

By the way, Hansen does an awesome job in their live performances and on their new material.

Hats off to Mick and the boys!

He did a bunch of rerecords, they just didn't put them on Can't Slow Down, they were on the website "jukebox" for a long time, not sure if they still are. If the Lou loons are like the perry loons, they'd be wise to whistle and act like they don't exist :)

In think that, if the guys want to re-record anything, they need to do it
in an updated, refreshing format. Do an episode of Mtv Unplugged
or VH1's Storytellers
where most bands are pretty much all acoustic.

Or go the same route Metallica, Kiss, Queensryche and some other acts have
and do a special show in the Bay with a symphony... Could you imagine Deen
singing M/F with a full symphony backing him up? Might just be worth the price
of admission all on it's own.

Or really do something extreme and take a cue from Def Leppard; do an episode
of CMT's Crossroads with country music super star. Martina McBride, Faith Hill...
Knock DL all you want, the episode they did with Taylor Swift is outstanding and I
can't believe an accompanying cd wasn't included. THAT version of "Photogragh"
could have easily topped the charts like it was 1982 all over again :)

Just a few wishes from me...

Let them do some different arrangements and unplugged versions. That would be a better option than B-grade songs, IMO.

I agree. To hear simple re-records with the current line-up is a complete waste of time and money. I wouldn't spend a penny on them. What is the point of throwing it in with another disc that people may actually want to purchase?

Do something fresh like mentioned above. The Def Lep Crossroads episode was great, as was the one with Heart.

Fresh and exciting has not been something Journey has ever considered since they hired Perry. ZZzzzzz

Away from Journey, Neal needs to appear on some young popular act's work. His melodic fret work would be killer with some the youngster's singing styles. Could be a Journey cover or a completely new song. Cain could sure write something for other acts as well.

The same old Journey thing, that they have been doing for decades is stale and worn out.

I think Kelly also had some live performances on the last Greatest Hits package the band released. The Jukebox recordings obviously got his voice out there for the few people that actually frequent the site, though I believe the original versions are back on the playlist now. Hansen was already with the band for almost five years before this recent release. I don't think he really needed to prove that he could sing the catalog after that long of a period. If people don't care for his singing by this time, no re-records are going to change that.

So, If you are not the Eagles, how do you sell a two or three disc package to a distributor without the greatest hits? Do you skip the big box stores and go through Amazon and Itunes?

no.

I would rather hear a symphony doing revision of journey than journey keeping on doing revisions of journey. HOW many journey versions of DSB do I care to hear???

speaking of symphonies... an Iowa Symphony is doing a tribute to Queen... and I also heard that in MN their symphony is doing
tributes to Zepplin. Which that would be COOL... their thinking is, the boomers dont care too much for the classical symphony music.. but will go see rock tribute done in smphony syle... I think I buy that theory.

It's ironic that Journey blocked one DSB revision and allowed the other which is now outselling the original '81 release on the UK Charts.

It really would be the death nail to a coffin that I've already been personalizing for the last few years.

Just say no.

Journey didn't like McElderry's version.

Journey didn't like McElderry's version.

I do remember them saying if the original isn't broke why fix it. How close to the original does the Glee version sound? That cover is about to go #1 in the UK. The original version of the song was getting close but has lost sales this week, now that the cover version has debuted. That's what my point was concerning the irony of it. One cover was blocked but another one that is six months old comes out of nowhere now that the original DSB is in the top ten and overtakes it.

Now, there is actually some DSB backlash starting on some of the UK music sites as even TV shows are using it as presentation music and it is totally saturating the airwaves, including McElderry's version which he is still doing live performances of on the telly. I think the song is reaching it's zenith big time. There is already talk about Simon putting the original arrangement on McElderry's version and the song being the next release for the X-Factor winner.
Journey might as well release Pineda's version of the song and join the party before it ends.
I was hoping for the original to hit the top of the pops but it looks bleak now that Glee is on the scene. Oh well, any version will be fine in the end as long it is number one.

Seriously I wouldn't mind hearing Arrival or Generations tunes if they changed the arrangement on them...spice em'up a little..

For some tunes solid guitar or piano intros with fresh arrangements would be a nice touch...

Also some duets with current stars would be a good idea...

just sayin'

Okay, now how does that get presented as an attractive package to Wal-Mart? Any marketing reps out there who can chime in?

My opinion has nothing to do with "loons" only music.

My sincerest apologies then.
Does your opinion allow room for re evaluation because Hanson DID do re records?

That looks to be the new line of thinking from Perry also. Notice how he actually got involved a little bit watching the Glee production. He must have been talking to Daryl Hall and Smokey Robinson, they're all for re-records, covers etc (provided copyright laws don't change anytime soon - cha-ching).
The success of the Glee Soundtracks has changed the game big time.

REO and others are probably hoping their songs are the next ones released as singles.

I agree with '78. Anything that keeps Perry on the payroll as band member #6 is cool with me.

Enough to build that extra room to house all those plaques that songwriters receive when an album they get credited on goes platinum. Right now the only place he can hang his Revelation one is in the garage.

GB, this is an awesome topic. I think re-records have to have a purpose. Obviously, the 2nd disc of Revelation was a Wal Mart mandate, and Journey simply couldn't turn down the opportunity to make some cash and get their product to the consumer so I can see their purpose the first time around. This time??? I'm drawing a blank. I can't think of any way to rationalize another disc of re-records. Neal has mentioned a "conceptual album about current events in the world" and until I know what the hell that means it's hard to tell if re-records fit in or not. However, I'm going to venture to guess that it's a bad idea. You need to stay clever and give the consumer what they feel is good bang for their buck. My suggestion is a double album (CD) with a "free" Blu-Ray disc of the Manila concert for $14.99. If you can swing that deal with Wal Mart I'm guessing you'll see pretty robust sales and another platinum or double platinum album. Especially if you can get Wal Mart to do the "exclusive" advertising, including playing the show in all stores like they did for Revelation for a short time. There were people huddles around the TV's watching the concert and talking about it. Great way to advertise for free.
