Good Lord. Sounds very weak. Cracking on some simple notes. Too bad.

Doesn't sound warmed-up to me.
He cautiously sings the whole thing in his low range.

Either you're wrong or he is very unprofessional. You would think as a singer, " I have to go on at 9, I better warm up at 845."
He cautiously sings the whole thing in his low range.
You made it through the whole song? You are more courageous than I. That was painful to hear.

Not one of the better Who songs anyway, at least IMO.

Yikes, struggles begin with "But my dreams...."

wow, kind of underwhelming.
@ 2:14- again, Steve's sense of pitch is really OFF. Holy moly- how can he be THAT off???
Agreed, not my favorite Who track. People seem to like this one though.

Well....we knew they couldn't wait for him to get his voice back. Too bad...such a good person.

Not his best, to put it mildly. Thank God, that was a year ago and there's newer video of his voice sounding great. His fan didn't do him a favor by putting this up.

The song is not in his wheelhouse. at all.

Steve sang with Burtnik and did The Who tribute this past weekend....Is this an annual event? Was this really recorded last year?

I think Jeremey is correct that it was this past weekend and that the uploader listed the date as 2009 instead of 2010.
Steve sounds like he has a cold to me. Does anyone with a more solid singing background agree?

Well, it was really only the first minute that was bad, and then he evened out nicely, and then the music overpowered his voice from then on on this audio so really couldn't hear him anyway, but sounded fine from what I could tell.
Well, scratch that. Here's another video of the performance, and just not good all the way through, and it was this month, not last year.

Big Augeri fan here and that sucked... that song might actually be too low for him.

YUP. Sounds like he didn't rehearse it as well. Maybe he just thought it'd be fun to do a Who song and did it off the cuff, but wow...

Check my post above and the pitch he hits... it's not even CLOSE (@ 2:14 on the previous video 2:06 in this one). I'm also an Augeri fan, but the more live stuff I hear of him, the harder I have to remember why. As I always say, his recorded stuff is great, but his live stuff is always questionable. Mostly because his sense of pitch is not good in the least. It would be very interesting to hear the ACTUAL recording of the Vegas 2001 show that Herbie Herbert saw.

As much as I like his personality, his spirit, and dedication, I have always had too many "cringing" moments at his live shows. The one exception was I saw their original show at the Beacon in NYC -- he seemed tentative but nailed the songs. Ever since, there were always pitch, range, and volume issues. And I hear that the 2001 show was just brutal.

Yeah, but re the DVD show, did you hear the 2001 show was brutal from people repeating the Herbie Herbert interview, or was it from people that were actually there? Like Brywool said above, I also would like to hear the actual recording to see how off he was compared to postproduction magic. I would love to hear what people who were there thought about the 2001 Vegas live show compared to what Herbie said. I've always wondered if it was really as bad as he said it was.

I don't think his live stuff was always questionable. '98-'00. Best form I saw Augeri in was Camden, NJ '99 and he was amazing live. At that point he was a horse live, then the raggedness started to show, but for me with perry or Augeri as long I have the fantastic studio recordings that is the most important. Though his live sustainability was going or gone by that point I think his most powerful studio performance was Generations.

I saw him in 98 and was underwhelmed to say the least. No power and not great pitch. However, the albums made a believer out of me, and I liked him and I love both albums- yes kids, even Generations. Just not live. I'm the same way with Freddie Mercury. Live, he wasn't great, again, his pitch was all over the map and he ducked a ton of high notes.

Ya, I posted the vid, but wasn't so sure at first if it was that he didn't sound great or that I just hate that WHO song. I'm no musician, so don't know all the pitch issues, etc, but if they were willing to use tape, why didn't they just use some of the instant software out there for pitch correction so it wasn't noticeable live? Either way, I've seen Steve live about 8 months ago, and he was much better. Not sure that was the best WHO track to cover.

I never saw Journey in the same talent light after Perry. Just is musical fact. The writing went south w/o Perry, followed by cd sales and concert draws. JSS was at least enticing, but I think Neal could not handle his STRONG talent /personality.

yeah, not my favorite who song by a long shot. I usually turn that one off.
Regarding the pitch stuff correction stuff- It may be that it was thought "hey, these are all pros. Shouldn't need it" or "we're real singers, why do we need it?"

I think Neal woud love strong talent. Maybe couldn't handle his personality, I don't know, but, most importantly, just, upon reflection, probably felt his voice was wrong for Journey.

At the show. Said the looks Neal shot Steve during show were typically the result of pitch problems and the like.
