The *Next* Journey CD

Postby trekman » Tue Feb 23, 2010 9:36 am

Sorry if this has been posted. Has anyone read this before:

"Neal Schon says the upcoming Journey record will move away from their famous AOR sound and create a concept album instead.

The band behind iconic tracks Don't Stop Believin', Any Way You Want It, Who's Crying Now and many more feel they've gone as far as they can in that direction, and it's time to turn back to a more rock vibe.

Guitarist Schon tells Classic Rock Magazine: "I had a long talk with keyboard player Jonathan Cain and I said, 'We have all the AOR material we need. We've got all the hits we need and we need to play that stuff for ever. There's no getting away from it.'

"So I don't see the point of repeating the same song with different chords.

"I'm going for a conceptual record because I really feel we have the musicality to pull it off. We have everybody's attention. And the days of writing songs that are three-and-a-half minutes long for radio are over."

Schon says his instinct is built on a gut feeling for what people want to hear. He says: "I think in Europe, of not in the States, they're ready for us to come up with something on the artsy side. It's got to go up and down. It can't stay on the ceiling because there's no dynamics.

"I think it's going to be a very musical record and I have a cool thing to write about. But I don't want to reveal too much because somebody will steal it.

"But it's a one title, like most of our records are, and it's a very deep subject. Real stuff."

I know a lot of people dont want Journey to change. I LOVE Journey!! But I would welcome a CD that Rocks harder. A concept CD would be very cool!!

Hmm... one word title... maybe it's a concept album based on Nostradamus... LOL. Though I'm one of the few who really enjoyed Judas Priest's ill-fated concept album. Really don't see why it's so dispised, other than the fact that it's not another British Steel or Painkiller. Anyhow, high hopes for Journey's next effort. Hoping they try to infuse some of their pre-Perry style into at least some of the songs, some of those were truly EPIC.

Here we go...

Postby RockitRide » Wed Feb 24, 2010 1:42 pm

"Yep, gonna try something new." Translation: "All of our existing fans will buy it, play it once and flush it down the toilet. We will attract absolutely zero new fans because this CD will be devoid of melody as we try to be something we are not..."

How many times have we heard this from bands that just don't get it? Rest assured, this is gonna really suck.

I don't think they're gonna deviate from their sound, man. They're just gonna use more up-tempo and rocking songs. Instead of ballads and mid-tempo songs I think we'll hear a disc more inclined to have songs like Separate Ways, Chain Reaction, Edge Of The Blade and Where Did I Lose Your Love. Journey's core sound will always be the same as long as Neal and Jon are in the band. I don't think they could change it drastically if they wanted to.

They might just come out with an album that sounds a whole lot like Journey, only better. Problem is, the genre has limited appeal.

I'm hoping it means a more "sophisticated" sound (lyrically and musically) and lyrics that aren't packed fresh with Gouda.

You know...as opposed to songs that are color by number style i.e: Intro > verse > chorus > verse > bridge > chorus/climax .....rinse and repeat.

They have tons of talent, a singer that can emulate any sound that they want, and they aren't going to be around forever. I say now is the best time to be doing this. (hopefully they can get on itunes.)

I'm pretty pumped up to hear anything new from Journey, and if they want to go and do a full CD of rockers, I'm all for it, hell I would like it better than having 1/2 of the CD as ballads, time to rock.

Take:

La Raza Del Sol (extended Vegas version)
World Gone Wild
Of A Lifetime
Edge Of The Blade
Where Did I Lose Your Love

Lock them in a cage for a few hours, poke them with sticks, and record what comes out. That'd be a badass record.

People are closed-minded. I actually liked Nostradamus as well. A lot of people 'expecting' what they wanted were disappointed. That doesn't mean it wasn't a damn good LP. Not to mention people who wholesale piss on it couldn't write a jingle for cat food, much less 2 hours of music.

I would throw in Winds of March, Kohutek, and Live and Breathe as well for something extra.

Haven't they played that card enough already? What next, dig up his mom and cart her around on tour also?

Neal said it would be something new. Homeless people making it in the music industry isn't new, it's just that bands tend not to wear it on their chest like a fucking merit badge.

I'm excited to see what the new album brings but another "woe is me" tale based on the life of their singer is not something I need to hear for the millionth time.

In fact, listening to Troubled Child, which has a progressive rock bent, would be a great style for this conceptual album.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUBr2uCDOg4

And on Opened the Door, of course this was Steve's voice at its most stunning, but the melody with Neal's guitar I absolutely love in this song. I hope they are creative with their melody like this on Neal's solos in songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMvfFn_oZ1M

or go for broke and do some EXTENDED SOLOS in some songs on the new album like Opened the Door live (1979) a couple minutes longer. Come on. You know you want to do it, Neal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5a0jMX99X0 WOW :!: They all sound brilliant on this song. Perry soars. Neal's solo is amazing.

I've come to absolutely love this song. It has really grown on me. Now, talk about a song I hit the skip button on in the car. Backtalk sucks.
