Journey Lyrics

I've been reading where a lot of people think Journey's lyrics are pure fluff. While I agree that SOME of the songs are fluffy, I was struck by the lyrics that the guy who posted Spaceman put in the comments section of his subscription area. He posted, "walked off a cliff, and I closed my eyes..." I love that. Is that dumb? I love the lyrics off of Daydream, too. "Shining in the silver moon, crystal ships are sailing to the seaaaaaa eeeee eeeee eeeeee eeeeeeeeeee" lol. I love that BIG TIME. There are many others, too. What do you all really think? I wish I could write stuff like that.

"Walking Away From The Edge" had some pretty deep, serious lyrics too. They're not all fluff, and the songs that are... who cares? They're some of the best songs written on the planet. Most people that say stuff like that are just jealous of their success.

Journey lyrics are pretty light and fluffy. If It weren't for Perrys voice, I wouldn't touch this band.

Journey is the "summer blockbuster popcorn flick" of Rock (that title probably fits Bon Jovi better). Turn off your brain and you'll enjoy it.

Look at a song like DSB, you can take the lyrics and read them anyway you wish. The stuff they do is very ambiguous. Journey music is more about the hooks and melodies rather actual lyrical content. That's why the idea of a concept album album is just so foreign when you think of Journey music.

Sometimes I prefer ambiguous lyrics, depending on my mood. That's also why I prefer a lot of instrumental music. It's completely open to interpretation.

Well, even if you hate me (for no reason)...glad to be of service.

No? You can hear biblical references in Rubicon and One More..You can hear God in Faith in the Heartland, and religious overtones in Better Life.

Well, now that you mention it, I guess I'd just never thought about it. You're right.

Most Journey songs are about monogamous relationships. That is a religious concept.

The same could be said of early Beatles music. Remains absolutely brilliant though. I like Bruce Springsteen very much but I get a little tired of all the underlying anger (maybe anger is too strong a word but I can't think of the right one right now) in his songs. He is so determined to make a point on some of his tunes that it feels like lecturing a little... However, I adore Bob Dylan... His dark pieces are like a sad/melancholy but beautiful book or painting so maybe that's why I love all of his work...

The majority of the songs from the commercial era of the bad are "Guy meets girl", "Guy falls for girl", "Guy breaks up with girl", "Guy loves girl", etc.; however, every once in awhile they throw you a deep bone like Walking Away From The Edge, Troubled Child, Raised On Radio that mixes it up a bit.

I'm not sure anybody would consider Raised on Radio the song as one that has great lyrics. Interesting concept, yes, but that is as far as I would take it. Quite possibly, the worst lyrics on the album.

Yeah, a lot of Trial by Fire has quite blatant religious overtones. That made it hard to get into at first, since I'm sort of an Atheist (And one who's been beat over the head with religion since day one, so I'm a *tad* sick of it right now). :P The 70s and 80s stuff was mostly fluff, but once and awhile they were close to hitting it out of the park lyrically. Just not too often. I listen to Journey for the music and the vocals anyway, though, so it was never a huge problem for me (Except for some of the 70s stuff, especially on Evolution... some of that stuff was way too saccharine for me.).

Oh yeah, and I'm pretty sure Walking Away from the Edge had some help from Geoff Tate, who is a pretty damn good lyricist most of the time if you ask me.

Well, that's stretching it a bit. Sure, it's partially a religious concept, but it's also pretty much a part of secular western society now as well. And most love songs are about monogamous relationships, really.

I think my favorite cheesy-journey-lovey-dovey lyrics are ones that keep the genders open-- as in, ones that use "I" and "you" instead of "he" and "she". That way, anyone-- straight, gay, whatever-- can relate to the song. I like that.

I concede that I was really digging for a reason for the previous poster to say Journey has Christian lyrics, but the monogamous relationships concept would be much weaker if it weren't for religion. It's certainly not biological.
