Possible halftime acts for Superbowl XLV?

Postby Don » Mon Mar 22, 2010 2:45 pm

Kenny Chesney seems in line for the gig and has said he wouldn't mind doing it. He's got over 5k signatures on a facebook petition (and counting). Anyone think the NFL will NOT go country at next year's game in Dallas? Shania Twain was the last CW artist to be on stage in 2003. Does Journey get some play with all the DSB love that's been going around lately (does Journey even want to go back after their hiccup in the beer garden or would it be a great way to kickstart their 2011 world tour)?

MTV's Top 5 halftime shows.

5: Super Bowl XXXVII (Shania Twain, No Doubt and Sting)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 48, Oakland Raiders 21
What could liven up one of the worst Super Bowls ever played? Shania kicked off half time in 2003 with "Man I Feel Like a Woman." Sure, it was radio-friendly, but maybe not the best way to jump-start a Super Bowl crowd. Bring in No Doubt and a push-up crazy Gwen Stefani singing "I'm Just a Girl" — well, that's more like it! Cap it off with an awesome duet with Sting on "Message in a Bottle" and Gwen pretty much guaranteed herself a spot in Super Bowl history.

4: Super Bowl XLI (Prince)
Indianapolis Colts 29, Chicago Bears 17
The Purple One faced an uphill battle: Not only was it pouring rain in Miami, but he also didn't have any other acts surrounding him to pick up the slack. But clearly, nothing could stop him, as he busted out guitar solo after guitar solo on classics like "Let's Go Crazy," "1999" and "Proud Mary," as well as a cover of Foo Fighters "Best of You." His show-closing "Purple Rain" made even the most hard-edged Bears fan swoon.

3: Super Bowl XXXV (Aerosmith, 'NSYNC, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, Nelly)
Baltimore Ravens 34, Giants 7
2001 was MTV's first chance at producing the show, and they absolutely nailed it. It was a multi-genre explosion that featured Aerosmith, 'NSYNC, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige and Nelly all sharing the stage. (If only the Ravens didn't blow out my Giants 34-7 in one of the most lopsided Super Bowls ever.) Still, seeing Britney and JT share a stage was almost as sweet as the half-Giants, half-Ravens jersey Nelly sported during the show.

2: Super Bowl XXVII (Michael Jackson)
Dallas Cowboys 52, Buffalo Bills 17
The energy of the Super Bowl half time show really didn't pick up steam until about 1993 when Michael Jackson was the lone performer (of course, if you count the 3,500 kids who joined him on stage during "Heal the World," that number increases significantly). The epic "Heal the World" performance capped off a run through "Jam," "Billy Jean" and "Black or White." It was Michael at his peak, and he certainly set a precedent for gigantic spectacles at the Super Bowl.

1: Super Bowl XXXVI (U2)
New England Patriots 20, St Louis Rams 17
U2 took the stage in 2002 for an unbelievable, unforgettable and beautiful tribute to the victims of September 11, 2001. With a banner scrolling through the nearly 3,000 victims draped behind them, Bono and company performed a rendition of "Where the Streets Have No Name" that was felt across the country. It was a much-needed boost to the American psyche, and what better stage than the Super Bowl to accomplish just that?

The facebook petition seems the better way to go. As we saw the other day, FB is only second in hits to Google on a daily basis. Especially after you have gotten the easy votes from the fan sites, FB is the one way to get the word out there.

I think I would rather see FOUR GREAT college marching bands than the same old lip synching stuff going on....

LET USC MARCHING BAND, THE OHIO STATE MARCHING BAND, MICHIGAN MARCHING BAND and the FIGHTING IRSH OF NOTRE DAME MARCHING BANDS
all take the field one at a time... and do their fight songs... with Ohio State doing the script ohio to close it out... I know its the NFL... but damn those bands are
AWESOME... and they wont have to lip sync!!

What a great point. Don't these fans who pimp this stuff realize that it's not going to be 100% real. Even if the vocals, are, then the rest of the band won't be live. Should Neal and Jon be up there PRETENDING to play while Pineda is singing live? Tape Gate reversed.

Of course, the safe bet would be to pipe in Arnel's vocals also.

It would be pretty slooooooooooow if we did in fact let everything go. We'd be left talking about Gator Football.

Don't taking any of it personally. I'm still going to go see Schon with my Jana loves Neal placard. I'm still a team player.

Tell him I almost came to see him. :D I saw where TFF is touring overseas and they met in California to rehearse, so decided to do one show there and it was at the same time as Neal's shows last week, but on a different day, so I could combine my two loves. And TFF never tours except a few shows every few years on the west coast, so I thought I should go for it. But flying that far for a weekend was too expensive for two, and couldn't get the time off to tie in a week in California as a vacation.

If I were a big fan, I would pick TFF over Neal, only because the chance of seeing those guys is a bit rarer. I've already seen Journey quite a few times (mostly in the Perry era). Same with Depeche Mode, I would go to their show over a lot other artists I like just because the opportunity is so limited.

Absolutely. I wouldn't fly across country to see Neal's side band, but it would have tied in nicely b/c of that one TFF show. Though, they did post they hope to do a very small east coast tour this summer. I hope so. Roland was in the States/California for the summer last year and Curt, who lives there, said they decided to do like seven shows, and they had fun and got along. So they decided to do some shows this year. This spring it's with Spandau Ballet in Australia and Philippines and then supposedly the east coast during the summer. I hope that goes through.

well, I'm officially on cloud nine. TFF is definitely going to do an east coast tour of about 18 dates and Orlando, so far, is one of them, but no firm info. They do a small scaled-down show, nothing like their heyday, but I'll take it. :D

Two things Rick.

1- Get the Stanford Band. If you have to ask why, then you haven't seen them. Here's a pic of these clowns. 8) Their band plays rock n roll tunes, including Free's Alright Now, Journey's Anyway You want It, Foghat's Slow Ride, and Springsteen's classic, Born to Run. They are tight as a Tito's wallet. They are politically incorrect and it's awesome. Remember when the Spotted owl was a big deal in the Pacific Northwest, and it was an endangered species, it conflicted with Lumber jacks and forests?...Well the Stanford band went out onto Oregon States football stadium and immediately performed the previously mentioned 4 rock songs, and made a human diagram of a chainsaw cutting up an owl. The Beaver fans were not amused. That same year while playing at rival California Berkeley, drunken band mates took a group piss in the Bears end zone..at Halftime in front of 60,000 people. ballsy.

The Stanford mascot is "Tree." The University name is the Stanford Cardinal(the cardinal red colour) and is named after Leland Stanford, one of the Big Four railroad tycoons.

2-- As much as I disrespect Journey, I would bet money Pineda wouldn't lip sync; he is good enough for sure to go live, as long as he takes it seriously, unlike how he did in Super Bowl last year. The only act to sing live to my knowledge was Springsteen and Shania Twain(Gunbot can correct me if I am wrong). The NFL Entertainment committee wanted to use tape, and Bruce insisted and said "no," and threatened to pull the ESB...Needless to say, they went on live. I think Pinny would do a great job, however, I can't see the NFL hiring Jourey without Perry. It would just be too weird.

I can't imagine that shania was live, but I'm not sure. You're right on doubting they let them sing at the halftime show without the original singer. The only way I see them having a real shot was if, by some miracle, off this new album they had a huge hit and huge success with the album that threw them in the limelight, which in this day and age is an almost impossibility for an older band unless you're springsteen or bono.

Did Shania Twain Lip-Sync Her Super Bowl Halftime Songs?

By Julia TurnerPosted Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at 5:48 PM ET

ABC producers promised that the pop stars they recruited for this year's Super Bowl halftime show would do their singing live—no lip-syncing allowed. But what about country star Shania Twain, who seemed to hop around the stage without missing a note?

Paul Liszewski, who produced the sound for the show, says Shania's mic was hot and her vocals were live. (Other audio engineers who watched the broadcast agreed.) Twain's accompaniment, however, was what's called a "band in a box," which means the back-up vocals and instrumentals we heard were prerecorded. So while the diva was belting out show-stoppers like "Man, I Feel Like a Woman," her onstage drummer was thrashing away merely for effect.

Other bands use a different mix of taped and live elements, depending on the nature of the show. At a dance-heavy concert where the lead singer does exhausting choreography, we might hear a tape of the lead vocal track. At an event like the Super Bowl, where sound engineers have five minutes—rather than the usual six or eight hours—to set up, bands are more likely to rely on tape. During No Doubt and Sting's halftime sets, we were also hearing live vocals and canned instrumentals. Last year, when U2 played, we heard both Bono's voice and the Edge's guitar live, though the rhythm section was prerecorded.

For big events, even totally "live" bands have tapes standing by in case of emergency. If, say, Bono's microphone had suddenly failed last year, an engineer in a broadcast truck equipped with an audio mixer would have quickly brought up the sound on a prerecorded version of Bono's vocal track. If the person doing the blend did the job right, the audience would never even notice the glitch. (That explains the moment when Shania ran back to the stage after mingling with the crowd and didn't appear to be singing, even though her vocals came through loud and clear. When Twain took too long getting back to the stage, the mixing engineer likely brought up the prerecorded vocal track, and then took it back down it as Shania started to sing.)

How do performers keep time when they're faking it? Musicians are almost always listening to a recording of the song on a monitor as they perform. (Most often, that recording is a mix of all the song's tracks, but drummers sometimes prefer to hear a "click track," which just goes tick-tick-tick like a metronome.) Traditionally, the monitors were speakers placed on stage. But that meant that the performers couldn't move around freely and that their microphones might pick up the tape track. These days, many musicians opt for a wireless in-ear monitor, which allows them to strut through a song without losing the beat or tripping on a wire. Each one is custom-molded to the ear canal, looks a little bit like a hearing aid, and can run somewhere in the neighborhood of $2,100.
