If anyone gets Palladia, the HD music channel, they will be premiering Journey's Live in Manila concert this coming Saturday night. If you don't already have the DVD, here's a great chance to catch the show.

For those of you that don't have Palladia, you might want to consider adding it to your channel lineup, use your on demand function or whatever...lots of incredible concert footage!

Journey: Live In Manila airs on Saturday, May 29th @ 900p EDT.

Caught a few scattered songs, including Faithfully, Lights, Still They Ride, Wheel in the Sky, and Escape today. The picture and audio looked/sounded GREAT... far superior to the underwhelming quality of the hard-copy DVD. They need to Blu Ray this fucker immediately. I still don't think Arnel sounds all that great on this disc, but I'd pay to see it in HD.

My thoughts exactly. I think the quality is amazing... just not the vocals! :? I wish they had someone else like Chalfant on the vocals. It's just hard as hell for me to get over that accent. :( I'm still willing to give their new album a try, but it's gotta kick ass for me to give a damn.

Are you guys fuckin' kidding me? Arnel's about as close to Perry perfect on the classics as you'll get. The guy's just flat out amazing in my book.

He is amazing. My signature has two songs from Manila, and fantastic vocals on both. Plus, always fun to see Rip on there.

Why so defensive? I just don't enjoy his performance on here at all. His voice has already gotten noticeably thinner after just 2 short years of touring with the band. It's very shrill at many spots on this DVD to my ears. The guy's just NOT flat out amazing in my book, so kindly go fuck yourself and if you roll your eyes at me again I'll poke 'em out 8)

I don't think you can really come into watching this with high expectations. You've got a guy with an accent, who replaced a guy who stepped in for a guy who had the inenviable task of trying to follow a guy who made all these songs famous.
Add into that a a show shot in front of a crowd who seem to have very little enthusiam, coupled with the limited deep shots to hide all the empty plastic lawn chairs (the result of trying to charge American ticket prices , the equivalent of three months pay for some of the citizens in this locale) and you have what you have.
Yes, due to the Big Brown Cow promotion, the Disc sold bucket loads the first day of release but then what? No RIAA certification, no talk of a BluRay release, nothing.

For the diehards, it's a good release and if you're someone who has every boot from Perry to Augeri, to Soto in Nebraska to Pineda in Chile, this is right up your alley.
On the other hand, If you haven't followed Journey since Perry left, this isn't likely to bring you back into the fold, especially beyond the curiosity of seeing two singers trying to cover one guy.

Glee on DVD will blow the sales of this out of the water.

If this would have been done at a smaller venue which could have been sold out, with fans who actually knew the words to the songs and were totally involved, this could have been good. Even without it being a sellout, if you could get screen shots of the fans singing along (I'm not just talking about the first two rows) Chicks flashing their smiles and boobs, all the things that make a rock concert video what it's supposed to be it could have probably passed muster. From what I understand, the 2001 DVD wasn't filmed in front of a full house either but the crowd shots had enough action and excitement to cover the fact, for the most part.
By the way, Smiles and Boobs do not equate to Rip Rokken's dome being showed every two seconds either. Despite the band's popular new moniker of Arnel and the J-Boyz, this isn't supposed to be a "Frankie Goes To Hollywood" Concert.

The terrible mix on this particular Journey show which pretty much eliminates the crowd noise really brings home the fact that this homecoming wasn't all that it was cracked up to be, unfortunately.

My personal opinion is that the Chile Broadcast, for all of it's flaws blows this away, just from the overall excitement of the crowd and the unrehearsed spontaneity of the band, something that definitely seems to be a bit lacking in this release.

I actually handed out copies of the Chile show that I had burned to people all over the office. I can not recommend this disc in the same way though. If the Blu-ray comes out with different camera angles and redone audio mix that brings the crowd into it, I will re-evaluate my position on this performance but as of now, it's thumbs down .

We were told over and over again that this was being filmed in the highest Resolution in the most extreme HD quality possible so maybe I am holding a personal bias against the band for not delivering what they promised at retail but there are other flaws in the performance that can't be fixed by HD, regardless so it's still likely to be a wash.

P.S. The crowd walking out on possibly the best song off of Revelation, TDTWT, along with the "not so good" Performance of said song is really the last nail in the coffin for me.

It's ok. There is nothing to support this year. And overall, I think 2009 was a winner for Journey, even if the DVD wasn't all that great / successful. I'll be awaiting to see what comes out of the studio for the next album, although I have a feeling it will be lacking something. Kevin Shirley doesn't exactly seem to be cumming on himself over the vocals, at least reading into what he doesn't say, which means he's really not said anything, which I take to mean he is not all that excited, but time will tell.

Neal looked really handsome and played his a... off. Nuff said.

P.S. I thought Turn Down the World Tonight was beautifully sung by Arnel.

Only really major flaw for me was the extremely muted sound of the audience. Big boo-boo on the production of the DVD. In just concert-goers' videos of the concert you could hear the crowd very loud on the hits. Muse did this too on a DVD and I hate the viewing of the audience clapping and waving their hands but really muted sound.

Obviously, never the same reaction on the new songs, though appreciation was shown in Manila. Just like when Tears for Fears just played there this past month. Well, the audience was absolutely insane for them compared to Journey b/c that was the music of their youth, TFF and New Wave, but they played six to seven new songs and the audience sat but showed appreciation. They wanted the hits.

Well, I was wrong bf. He did say this earlier:

"and Arnel has been writing and singing up a storm."

You know what else was cool about the Chile show was the catwalk. It really brought the crowd into play. Also the close ups of the crowd in the terraces. You really felt the excitemnet of a live show. The Manila show was in a venue that had to be cut in half from a stadium capacity to an Arena size configuration and then you still had another 30 percent of the seats still empty. The whole lawnchairs in the dirt theme didn't really pan out. It's okay if it's the US festival with 300,000 people but for 20k fans, just too much empty space, zapping the energy out of the production.

A European or South American show really needs to be the next video release for them.
GrasPop anyone?

The Araneta Colliseum would have been perfect for them bc it held 25,000 and that was what they ended up having, I think, is what Jon said in an interview, and it has stadium seating so seems even larger in videos. So for DVD purposes would look good. Unfortunately, the sound isn't great in that venue from what I've read.

I mentioned Graspop earlier but really, I think it should only come out as a packin. There are too many shows still in the archives people would like to see before paying for yet another DVD of singer #6 covering singer #3.
The Graspop show may have licensing issues anyway as it appears that the video shoot was done by the festival promoters and their local media affiliates.

Agreed, Chile and Graspop concerts are way way better in terms of capturing the live setting. The Manila DVD just doesn't have it. It's like miming or something :( But Arnel still rocked though :D

Journey's Greatest Hits Live also suffers from a dead sound. Some of the songs from that album come from a Frontiers show that was on Japanese TV so I can compare the sound and was a bit disappointed in the final product that came out on CD.

A live CD/DVD should convey that. I don't see why the heavy handedness in muting the crowd.

A few things came to mind after watching the show:

What's with Arnel's primate impression? He's jumping around constantly, which makes Neal, Jon & Ross look even older, more tired and bored out of their minds. That was glaringly obvious.

Arnel's accent isn't as obvious on alot of songs, which is an improvement.

Is Deen wearing eye makeup??? His face looked oddly swollen. His vocals were good, though, considering he was playing drums, too. Thin vocals, but on key.

They played Mother Father and any momentum the audience had gained, DIED.

It looked like the crowd could give a rats ass what band was playing behind Arnie, as long as he was singing. Watch the audience while Deen is singing.

Arnel is eating well these days! I hope those red pants have plenty of spandex.

Overall, I'd give that show maybe a 2 out of 5 stars. Just more of the same, with a somewhat better singer to cover the material than the last two. The whole Journey act has gotten pretty old and boring, with the third replacement singer and so many of the old tunes still being played on every recording/DVD. An overall snoozefest.

It's a strange thing. If you WATCH him, Arnel's antics are distracting, but his vocals aren't as obviously accented. If you LISTEN and not watch, you hear the obvious accent, but his jumping around can't distract. If you put the entire package together is becomes too annoying.

Funny analogy  but that what makes him different from other singers. And it's lessen now compared to the 2008 tour. I remember that part where he still jumping when it's already the last note on Separate Ways and he pulled it through. Impressive but risky.

Here's the way to do the audience, feel the energy, just right, can hear Dave sing, and he always has the audience sing a lot on this song. Love the way they shot this concert. You could feel the band's energy. An amazing DVD Touring the Angel - Depeche Mode - What a band 30 years old.

I saw part of it tonight, and I'm not stuck on Perry, Soto, or Augeri. But Arnel's vocals just didn't work for me. Great voice and he did have that Perry range. Some of his diction problems which didn't bother me too much, it's his phrasing that was off. That's what killed it for me.

That wasn't the worst part: the sound was terrible. Deen's drums were mixed horribly. Neil was all midrange and crunch. Ross' bass was lost a lot of the time (and a MM should cut!). The word I'd use is anemic. Could have been the best sounding concert there, but the mix on Palladia in 5.1 was just off.

Yes. And my sound system is not cheap and sounds good on good sources. It was a bad mix, or something in the transmission sucked the life out of it.
