Is Disney Trying To Broker A Perry/Journey Reunion?

I didn't see this posted anywhere yet:

wikipedia.com wrote:Steve Perry and Past & Present members of Journey have been courted by Disney and the producers of Tron Legacy to contribute an original Theme Song for the film. Journey wrote the original song "Only Solutions" for the first Tron movie, although that song ended up in the ending credits.

I saw something about Journey creating a song for the Tron follow-up, but nothing about it being past/present. I'll bet there's been a lot of discussion in the Azzoff/Journey camp if this is true. Would one movie soundtrack be enough for a reunion? I kinda' doubt it.

Oh, please, Journey would be all over it if they were asked to do a new song for the soundtrack of ANY movie right now. If it is for a 'reunion' with Perry, it would be up to Perry deciding he wanted to do it.

Yeah, if Journey would be singing a new song for Disney, they'd be doing it with Arnel.

Unless of course, they are trying to get Perry to record and don't care about Journey.

Yes, unfortunate for the older crowd who love the old Journey. Journey is a new band now with Arnel and the following of the New Journey is much larger in numbers then us old Journey fans. Plain and simple, take it or leave it. If you love Journey and want them to be successful in today's music world, you got to let go of the old Journey and allow new Journey to move forward with the new following. To complete the cycle, Journey needs to stop playing all their old tunes and focus more on new ones. Disney stakeholders know all this.

Neal made it completely clear, waited for SP to come back. That day never came, time to get over it and move on. Journey goes back to SP now after seasoning AP, it would be much like dumping your new wife for an old ex-wife, which couldn't be more wreckless and retarded.

This depends on how you look at things. It's Journey's Greatest Hits, not Revelation that has taken up residency on Billboard's album chart and that's despite the Big Blue Sticker (Sony marketing at work) on the front listing Steve Perry as the singer, not Arnel. Even though Revelation is the better deal money wise, people are buying the 20 year old album instead. Add into it the fact that the re-records have been neutered (with the exception of Faithfully and WITS) by the requirement of all songwriters signing off on any tunes being used for soundtrack or promotional purposes and the continuous availability of the classics on iTunes and Amazon Music, you can easily come to realization that Journey and Perry are going to continue to maintain a close association for a long, long time. As far as distancing themselves from the older material, Neal has already acknowledged the need to play the older material in live setting, thus the reason he's not looking to score any more radio hits with this new album as his setlist is full of must play tunes already. Schon knows where his bread is buttered, believe me.
Perry is always going to be the band's albatross (albeit a golden one), whether it be Augeri, Soto or Pineda singing. Look at all these interviews over the last few months, it's like no singers or new albums existed after Perry. You'll have the occasional interest of the new singer's back story but even that has been beat to death. Now, it's all about the back catalog for fans whether they be young or old. Arnel for one seems to understand that he is no more than another spoke in the wheel of this New Journey Corporation, whose greatest assets are the music they created 25 years ago.

Daft Punk will be doing the film score. There might be an older Journey tune somewhere in the film, hence the reason for contacting past and present members of the band to secure permission to use the music.
The movie comes out in December. The band does not go back into the studio until November so that is a small window to work with if they are going to have something completed for the soundtrack.

WTF.......and the Loons are the delusional ones??? Journey is a NEW BAND???

OK with a set of freaking re-treads that makes Journey a "NEW" band???

I just don't get where the "NEW" band crap comes from.....they are playing the songs from the 1980's
that made Journey....ummmm.....Journey!!! Wrap it anything you want...but there is NOTHING NEW ABOUT IT!

YES...as discussed in the top forum, which by the way is not the NEW JOURNEY FORUM....why bang your
head against a wall...it's getting older than the songs Arnel is singing on his solo tour.

and I happen to love the BIG BLUE STICKERS ON THE GREATEST HITS....as they have the members listed who are
and will always be Journey!

Keeping in mind your points in the first three sentences that you've written, I thought many opinions on this board was that bands these days do not make money from the album sales anymore, primarily the concerts. If that's true, why would anyone want to push the album sales then with such a Journey's Greatest Hit's project?

What I was trying to say was the band is "new" to the younger generation. Yeah to you, me and a bunch of other's who were in high school in the 80's...sure it's not a new band. However to us, it has taken a new turn. And the album Revelation was all new material, not the DVD that was included....I've not even watched it yet from my album so I'm not counting any of the materials on that DVD as being new Journey.

When I say "New Journey...new following" I'm saying look at the large group of this band's following. How many 10 to 23 year olds are listen to Revelation? That's the target marketing group right there, simply because that number is so great. That's where the smart money's bet.

There are a lot of new young fans!! But how many of them are listening to Revelation?!?! I'd like to know the answer
to this, because noone really seemed to know the new material at the shows I've attended, NOONE ...
they stand, sing and cheer for just the hits!! :?

None are listening to Revelation. Okay, maybe a tiny fraction listening to it if their parents own it. Whatever Journey they are listening to is off iTunes for DSB or such or they MIGHT buy the Greatest Hits.

I would venture a guess that many of those younger fans are in fact fans because of things like the Sopranos and Glee, not Revelation. Obviously we need to subtract the filipino bunch from that group as they are primarily Arnel fans, and if he were not in the band would not be interested in Journey, IMO.

Journey is not a new band, they are just trying to continue making a living by hanging on to their past successes. Revelation and anything that is to come cannot come close to making a dent in what Journey did before it. It's not an insult to Arnel, it's just reality. Hehe... no Revelation there (pun intended).

They also did "1990's Theme", too.

It's not out of the realm of possibilities in the sense that if a deal could be brokered, they wouldn't need to be in the same place. Perry could overdub vocals anywhere at any time. Having said that, I don't see it happening, but it's nice if Disney wants a nod to the original movie.

That would be a huge mistake. Plus Arnel is part of the band so it's ridiculous rational to suggest subtracting anyone and/or any one group from being a fan of this band now. Many loyal Journey fans stayed with the band throughout the singer changeups. So the band has those numbers of loyal fans plus fans that came onboard for various reasons when Arnel became a member. The number of bitter and disgruntled fans because "their singer" isn't fronting the band any longer is far smaller a number than the fanbase Journey has now, and that fanbase Journey has now is the only one that really counts from an effective successful functioning business perspective.

I think pretty much everyone has raised valid points. But I think the words "new band" should be exchanged with "new incarnation." But I love how almost everyone gets their panties in a bunch over a simple phrasing mistake. Makes the Loons glaringly obvious.

Hope you didn't misread what I was saying, as I have no desire whatsoever to engage in an Arnel-hater debate. You have to read my first sentence before becoming offended at my second. I think there are 2 distinct and separate sets of 'new fans'. The first group I was referencing were those young people who now get a glimpse of the Journey magic because of things like the Sopranos and Glee. The second group is undeniably the filipino group who came on board because of Arnel. If, as someone suggested, the 'new fans' are buying the greatest hits and not the re-records, then it's apparent to me which "Journey" they're interested in.

I believe Arnel's story had it's moment in time, but I believe that's fading and the 'legacy' of the music is what we're seeing now. And I personally believe that whatever they do from here on out will always pale in comparison to what they have done. JMO. :)

Disney does not wan't the current lineup. Disney cleary want Steve Perry and the boys who performed on Only Solutions, the lineup that made them a house hold name, they wan't The Voice. They wan't a "Reunion". Why would Disney wan't a new singer who replaced the previous 2 singers because they were fired? also the fact that Arnel has nothing to do with the original movie, that's a bad idea, and it's not a reunion, and that defeats the purpose. Chances are either Steve Perry refused, so Disney obviously dropped the idea. Does Disney even know Perry left the group in the late 90's? hmmm. At any rate, it's not happening, I'm pretty sure the film is already been finished and ready for a release anyway.

Any kids listening to Journey now, even if it is because are Arnel.. are gonna go searching for the rest of Journey's catalog and most likely legally or illegally download

Infinity
Evolution
Departure
Escape
Frontiers
Raised On Radio
Trial By Fire
Captured
Greatest Hits
Time3
the Essential Journey

...so all roads will eventually lead to SP/Journey material... and SP's legend only grows...
