He was born too late.

I got thinking though, if he had been brought up here, having perfect diction and no accent, he would be probably the closest match to the great one I have ever heard, as far as the Journey sound goes. What say you?

Well this thread proves that we all post senseless stupid shit some time or another and I've done it too before so.....Ok so I'll go along with this thread and say that.....if Arnel was born in the U.S. I think he would have got a good education and been a professional like a Dentist, Surgeon, Software Engineer, something on those lines rather then a singer. Look at where he was when he was very young and the situation he was in and his surroundings at that time in his life, there was nothing much else to choose from that he would enjoy doing except for singing. There weren't too many opportunities to choose from for him. Music is what was available for him at the time. Had his family had more money and had there been more opportunities for him, I'm sure he would have gone the other route instead. Not as glamorous sure...but...much more wise.

Perry's greatest ability as a singer was not his voice. It was his way of phrasing and getting melodies and the "emotional core" of the song. HEAVILY influenced by Sam Cooke and a few others, but he made his own style. Being able to sing Perry very well does not make one a close match to Perry, and I say this in respect of Arnel's ability as a vocalist.

Are you kidding me, AP isn't even close to Adam Lambert and thats sad because Adam's only been a pro for what now, 7 months. Shit, Adam may possibly be the best vocalist now period, i wouldn't doubt it one bit.

nah....Lambert is good, but he's still got a LONG way to go on the phrasing and delivery parts. Good voice though, great range, and will only get better with more experience. Look how much Perry improved from Infinity on through Escape, Frontiers and later albums on the phrasing/delivery aspect.

7 months... guaranteed, he wouldn't last a month on a tour.
One thing Arnel is that Lambert isn't and that's "seasoned".
Just being able to sing high notes is not the end all be all.
Being able to sustain the voice is also part of it.
Also, like many musicians starting out, Lambert needs to know
when NOT to use his instrument. Over singing and filling up every
measure with vocal acrobatics does not a good singer (or guitarist, or drummer, etc.)

He will most likely do great things as he gets older. I do hope to God that he gets some presentation help though. While Lambert may be a good singer, as a showman, he seems to be relying heavily on his sexual orientation to determine his show. That's going to (and has) turn off a lot of would be fans. I could care less that he's gay, but while people like Lady GaGa and Madonna in the 80s could get away with that stuff, Lambert looks ridiculous.

Still, a good singer, but not on Pineda's and definitely not Perry's level.

AP did not originally sing the songs he is singing now or for that matter what has he sung that is original that anyone knows??...SP was the one who made the songs what everyone wants to still hear today...but I expect that you already

To a T! You can have a fabulous voice, but it's all in the delivery IMO. Agree on Adam too, he's got a great voice, but isn't as good as he can get on the phrasing, delivery, etc, yet....although from the couple R&Bish songs I've heard, he's got the emotion down. I really like his vocals and he can only get better. I absolutely love R&B influenced rock vocals......more soulful/bluesy.

Exactly, that's what I meant. You can have a fabulous voice but if you don't know how to deliver a song with emotion/passion, then it's useless IMO. Range is very low on what makes a voice for me.....90% of it is delivery/tone/phrasing/vibrato. Probably why I'm drawn to voices with a tinge of smoky rasp......to me they just come across more raw/soulful/bluesy/emotional. Like Perry's vocals from Frontiers forward, or JSS and especially EM on anything R&B based.

Lambert only brings his upbringing and or background to the forefront only because thats what has learned to do and do well. No other rock star or singer today can add or capture that facet to their game along with a superstar voice. Saying he uses that to garner a better show is true, but he can, thats the point. Face it, Adam Lambert sells, period. Flat out period.

What's really so weird about Lambert's voice is you people seem to miss the fact that he can sing in an average tone with style and he seems to be able to become a different singer with the same body. It's weird and i don't know if iv'e ever seen or heard a vocalist seem average like any other singer in a borderline baritone voice, and just change his tone to tenor be at any given minute. Plus, he's crystal clear. That r&b style from AI could have been his claim to fame. Now he becomes a pro and cuts a rock/eletric/pop CD thats borderline brilliant. I dont really like pop. I do know from him.

Then you hear him sing flat out kickass rock and roll in lower notes or upper registers. On top of that, you learn he is a theatrical singer and what he did with those songs from brigadon i still can't believe. AP is a good singer, but he sounds the same on every song in tone and register to boot.

That's my point with Lambert. I use to think when i first heard him he's a average singer like everybody. But a year later, iv'e pretty much leraned his vocals are anything he seems to want them to be. Touring can kill, ask Steve Perry among others, but for now, Adam Lambert can SANG.

speaking of falsetto, Perry uses less of it than 95% of the singers out there....and the gliding vocals towards the end of Mother, Father is the latest definite falsetto he did. Maybe a bit in Why Can't This Night... in the backing vox, but I'd have to listen to it again to be sure. Head voice, sure, he used a bunch of it....but didn't use much falsetto at all.

There are some out there--Glenn Hughes maybe. John Farnham also has been known to radically alter his style for songs outside his normal song base. JSS on his normal stuff versus his work on the Trans Siberian Orchestra cd would be another obvious one.

Part of it also comes from the theatrical style that Lambert has. Someone who has a VERY strong motown influence like Perry isn't going to approach the melody the same was as someone trained closer to a Broadway style.
