Arnel setlist poll

Basically what's being polled is, Should Arnel be allowed to sing some, all, or none of Journey's catalog while he's on his solo tour.
I personally feel he should be able to sing the Revelation stuff on Disc one (with the exception of the Augeri originals). These songs have be initially introduced to the public with Arnel singing them. I don't see the performance of these specific songs having any bearing on what the public identifies as Journey music so I see no negative consequences to be had with their inclusion on his setlist.
The Perry material is up to him.

If you are inclined to vote, please be sure to leave a comment explaining your choice.
In other words, don't be a wuss and just select the last option automatically.

Revelation only, I could care less about hearing him do old material. As I said in the other thread, it would stop some of the karaoke comments. And I would actually consider going to see him on his own.

I voted for the Revelation material. It's the most current stuff that has his voice on it and it was a #5 debut and had a #1 DVD. Play it and play it often.

BAM!
Honestly, I didn't even think when Perry played the Journey tunes it sounded right. Journey songs should be played by Journey only.

Revelation only because the songs still need to be promoted and AP is the sound and face of today's Journey.

Huh? Dude, that album has run it's course. I voted he can sing the entire catalog....after all, he is the singer is he not? Sing them in the proper fucking key though.

I voted "none" because if he did sing any Journey tunes, he'd be doing a solo Journey act and I don't think that will sit well with everyone who is involved on a legal standpoint, unless everyone legaly involved with the Journey material performed gives consent/authorization. This would include SP as well since he owns some of the copyrights I assume.

Actually, as long as the venue pays the ASCAP/BMI fees, he can sing whatever he wants. How do you think tribute bands do what they do?

Maybe, but I'm not sure about all that. Perhaps "tribute" bands aren't as famous or under any contract and that is how they can sing tunes by other bands. AP is on a contract now and is a member of Journey, and I think that makes a big difference than if he's just some guy singing tunes in a garage band. When people hear the words "Arnel Pineda" and if it involves the words "Journey Songs" that can generate a fare amount of revenue just because of those "key" words. I do vaguely recall some years ago hearing some talk about band's making revenue by playing songs in clubs that is copy written by someone else was punishable by fines. From what I recall, if a band/club brought in "x" amount of revenue from playing material that is owned by someone other then themselves, they had to get permission from the owner(s) or they could face fines. I heard about that back when I was in cover bands and I was like "WTF".

As long as the clubs pay the license fee, it's cool. How do you think these other singers like Kid Rock, Martina McBride get to cover DSB. Arnel's (and pretty much most Filipino entertainers performing here in the States) whole setlist will be primarily covers to begin with.
Look at Jeremey with Frontiers, the guy does two dozen Journey songs a night, about what? 20 shows a month? And sometimes with crowds over 1,000 people. Trust me, as long as Arnel isn't trying to sell recordings of the show, he's safe legally.

If he sings Journey songs made famous by
The World Renowned
Journey Face, Voice and Frontman ...he's doing nothing but promoting
the Karaoke image!! I will never consider Ap
the Face of Journey ...wth,
Neal, Jon, Ross, Deen are still faces of Journey!!

I think they can do it with permission from the owner(s) of the material and with a contract that states the legal owner(s) of the material will get a specific amount of compensation, either a percent of the revenue or.....a fixed price fee, depending on the agrement/contract. If the owners think the project will bomb, they will likely want the fixed price fee for the permission. If it looks like it will be a huge sell out, they will want a percentage. With attorney and legal fees these days, I bet they do both or create the contract to be one or the other after it is determined how the product will move.

I think he should be allowed to do whatever he wants in his solo acts. He respects Perry and the Journey legacy, so why not.

I tihnk you are confusing live performances with audio recordings. Different copyright rules apply. And for video recordings of audio performances, more different rules apply.
I can tell you with the utmost confidence that Arnel can sing whatever he wants on this tour with out any legal issues unless Journey themselves (ie. Irving Azoff or Neal) have put restrictions on Pineda as part of his employment with the band.

I don't see anyone throwing the karaoke word around except loons, so that thought doesn't even come into my mind. Haters gonna hate'. Really, if you consider it karaoke, how does only singing revelation material make it any less karaoke? He didn't have any writing credits on revelation, and If you want to go down that route, he shouldn't be playing ANYTHING Journey related without Journey, because there's a whole band involved. It's silly though, because I don't think anyone considers his solo shows anything serious and the pinheads will be pinheads.

Speaking of which, you have the Face of Journey singing a Bon Jovi medley at the Philippine President's inauguration festivity. At the very least, Jon and Richie might appreciate that.

Without the band, it is, to me... this is my opinion!!
He was singing songs made famous by others before he became the lead of Journey ...
now he should cover his/Journey songs...the songs he made famous w/his voice!!
You ain't changin' my opinion!!!

Hey, I ain't a fan of singing all these different Artists songs, I would never go to an Arnel show. I'm just sayin'....he's still officially the lead singer of Journey and he should either be allowed to sing the entire catalogue, or nothing at all because he currently has zero writing credits, so,the logic behind only using revelation material, make no sense, at least to me.
Maybe someone can fill me in....but what are these solo shows for? Charity? or just for shits and giggles.
Not trying to change your opinion.
