there r pics of Smitty and Neal in the studio last week finishing up Neal's new album.

In The Studio with Journey's Neal Schon
Steve spent August 18-21 at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA, with Neal Schon. They recorded 11 tracks for Neal's new solo album.
The music is high-energy instrumental rock with powerful riffs and soaring melodies. Steve says that Neal is playing better than ever! Meanwhile, Steve got to really stretch out and interact with the guitar solos - capturing the kind of interplay and explosive chemistry that Steve and Neal shared when they played together in Journey.
Igor Len played keyboards and Neal is playing bass on the recording! Steve used his Sonor SQ2 drums and the Korg Wavedrum for these sessions.

I would have rather had him play on 2-4 Journey tunes than do this. In the grand scheme of things, this will predominantly be a waste of time. This album, no matter how good, won't sell much. I might still pick it up, though. I have yet to ever purchase a Perry, Schon or Cain solo effort.

He lies, the very first thing I ever saw in his car was FTLOSM.

And a concrete dildo that was labeled "For Dan's Use Only."

Smitty made Journey for me--ROR was not my fav. I FINALLY got to a Journey show in '86 and he wasnt there. I think I'm still a little bitter. :?

Anyway, Dannie my luv, u r missing soooooooo much good music.

p.s. Deen has MORE than redeemed Journey from ROR, imho. he's the peaches. BTW-Neal posted that he and Deen have finished 4 tracks and are solidly on the way to album 2. I'm just waiting to hear what Marco brings now. I'll go get the posts...

I'm going to get both cd's and compare the 2 drummers; this is going to be great since I hope to understand their differences better... I still don't know what a backbeat and so forth is really, so maybe this will be an opportunity to learn something. I don't know what I'd do without Neal in my life, lol. My spirits always get a lift when he's doing something. AND it's going to be really awesome to hear and listen for Neal playing bass... Dang.

Know what you mean, but I don't see it as a complete waste of time. I think anything the 'classic lineup' can do to work with each other will always rekindle a little flame. And from there, who knows. If SS ever does Journey again, I'm sure credit will be given to the studio work he's done on Schon's solo project. I hope this is a door opener. In fact, with the expected sonic direction of the new Journey album, and SS's latest direction, I wouldn't be surprised at all to list Smith listed in the credits as a percussionist.

Btw, no dis-credit to DC. I bet if Perry ever does make a return, the band will probably want Deen as a drummer/singer, rather than Smith just as a drummer.

later~

I'm still confused with the 'waste of time/won't sell much' theory. Sure, this isn't the ideal, long overdue collaboration project for a die hard Journey fan. But these two are masters of their craft. If you think about the amount of creativity that they will be able to share in WITHOUT doing it under the Journey umbrella, it's pretty damn exciting for music fans. And with a collaboration like this, it's not all about the financial success. Take a look at Steve Smith's discography, and the amount of artists that he's worked with. I doubt if most of those CD's raked in the big bucks, but I'm sure as shit that his playing with one artist opened up the door to an opportunity with another artist, and another artist, and so on, and so on. That's what a collaboration like this is all about. Let's enjoy it for what it is!

I think we sort of agree here (that it's cool to see them playing together again), Art, but that I may have chosen some poor words when I said "waste of time." Let me try again ... perhaps it would have been a better idea to use the Schon/Smith reunion under the Journey umbrella so it could garner the attention it deserves and reach the maximum amount of fans. Perhaps it was out of respect for Deen and/or Smitty (to not feel like he was being exploited/used), but I think we all would have liked to hear from Smitty on some new Journey tunes. But, hey, Deen getting to pick his brain and watch the master at work can't be a bad thing! It's still a great situation, but I think it could have been even better. That is, of course, assuming Smitty would have been interested playing on a new Journey record.

I see what you're saying...it's no secret that I'm a fan of Smith's solo work, so I'm really excited about this. No matter how you look at it, it'll be interesting.
