I am slowly remixing select Journey songs in 5.1 surround.

Guys and gals,

I have discovered the wonder of 5.1. surround music. Basically when done properly it makes songs sound and feel new and fresh again for starters. You can hear each instrument clearly in the mixes I am working on and it also reveals more detail. For instance, did you know there is a piano in Hotel California ? Its there trust me. Look at it this way. A stereo two channel mix has only two speakers to send out all of the audio mix. With more speakers involved certain parts of the mix can be moved to these speakers giving the mix more "breathing room". The result is that you feel like are in the middle of the sound like it is a bubble that is around you.

What I am doing has limitations as I do not have the original multi track recodings so I am using tools to extract certain parts of the mix then placing them in logical speakers. For instance, the lead vocals are almost always in the center channel. I like to place lead vocals in the middle front and harmonies behind you so that you feel enveloped in the sound.

Perry is not getting special attention in these mixes. I have posted a few Perry heavy stereo tracks in the past and that is not the goal here. Also I am addressing issues I have with the mix of some songs within what my tools allow me to do One member you will hear more of ( if you have the gear needed to play these back more on that in a minute) is poor Ross (why they mix him so damn low I will never understand.) Ross is often mixed FAR TOO LOW ! In the songs I have done so far I have been able to bring him out more without making it boomy or bass heavy.

Now. How do you play these back....

That is the tough issue. There are also legal issues with me offering their music for download. Suggestions ?

These would be dvd's but audio only. Maybe possible to put some slides of the band in there as the songs play but I dont know yet.

What you need to hear these. A 5.1 home theater or computer setup. Most dvd players have a digital output and if your not using that way you really should check the back of your stereo receiver to see if it has a matching connector. Lots of people have the gear and dont even know it. I still have the huge chore of turning all of these in to dolby digital or DTS which is the standard for movie surround. The Escape 1981 DVD has a dolby digital mix if you have the setup and it sounds so so. Mainly the rear speakers are used for the crowd and what ever sound is reverberating around the arena. WHat I am doing is far more 3-d for you ears.

I can listen to what I have done without having to burn it to dvd since my 5.1 surround setup and entire big screen home theater is pc based. For others to hear this I will have to encode them and burn dvd's plus mail them. Anyone interested ? Any suggestions on from those that are ? Dont want to break any laws here but you guys have got to hear JOurney this way.

Now .. NOt ever song benefits from this. Trial by fire just has WAY too much reverb on everything and it just sounds echo laden no matter how I turn the knobs. 78-83 sounds best. 85 so so and 96 blah....

peace.

Since you don't have the multis, what you're doing is a waste of time. Fake surround is bullshit.

If you want to hear true surroiund for Hotel California, find the DVD-Audio. It's worth it.

I have the real Dvd audio for that, rumors, Yes Fraglie and tons of Sacd's and all of Porcupine Tree's Dvd Audio releases as well as their recent Blu Ray concert that is in DTS master HD and it sounds fucking unreal. Porcupine Tree, love em or hate em have the best sounding stuff out there as far as recording, mixing and surround goes. Hotel Cali and Rumors in 5.1 24 bit 96k are amazing though and there is no way to get that good of a result however....

I have heard many fake dts mixes. Trust me when I say these sound good. The original Stereo field remains intact and no swirly sounding bullshit. Since Journey wont do proper 5.1 because the market is too small it beats nothing. Believe me, this method sounds pretty damn good on most songs. I have all of the fake surround dts Journey crap and they sound like the songs are being played in a cave. Not these.

Jim, I am laid up on short term disability right now. I cant play drums, my voice is whacked from pain meds etc so this is what I am doing to keep myseld musically busy. Discs in my neck are all messed up. 5 of them !
