How exciting for Arnel to be on stage with David Foster. His voice sounds amazing. And then to have Peter Cetera to come on stage like that was cool.

I agree Jana. :D

@ 3:15 - David Foster asked for AP's name, AP answered "Joe".

If David Foster likes Arnel it won't much matter what Journey decides to do with him in the future. :D

What, is he going to become Pineda's godfather also?
Arnel is in his mid 40's, has not shown ANY inclination of trying to create new material on his own during his downtime from Journey and seems perfectly content to live the life of a cover singer even after his run with the band ends. David could mold a young impressionable singer like Charice but with Arnel he has a guy who is pretty much marketless outside of the Asian community. Charice on the other hand is young and cute and has the added benefit of having Oprah and even Celine Dione in her corner also.
The biggest plus for the girl is that her accent issues have really been neutralized, something Journey couldn't accomplish with Arnel three years on despite having the ability to send Pineda to the best people available.
I can see David inviting Arnel along on his Hit Maker tour as a stand in when some of the REAL hit makers can't make a show but beyond that, what is the upside for Foster in this?

I just take this as David being the guy he is and letting a local talent get recognition in front of his hometown crowd. Bands do it all the time. A nice moment and opportunity to let Arnel do what he (and the rest of the Filipino music industry) does best, covering other people's hits.

As the title of the thread indicates, it was a random moment.

Perfect! I see my statement has at least stimulated some conversation, albeit, that it was mean in jest.

Not much to talk about until Journey tours again and we'll see how that goes and whether the vocal coaching has worked, although it didn't seem like it from the YT vid with David Foster.

I originally thought Foster had singled out Pineda for recognition by the audience but the real story is a little bit different, actually it's more about Charice.

http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquirerhe ... at-concert

........The show yielded many surprises, including Foster picking volunteers from the audience to sing. Among those who obliged, aside from virtual nobodies, were Randy Santiago, Pilita Corrales and Arnel Pineda.
Santiago joked that he had just stood up to go to the men’s room. With Foster accompanying him on the piano, he sang “Wildflower” by Foster’s old band Skylark.
Corrales asked Foster, “Would you mind if I sing a Tagalog tune?” She went on to do “Dahil Sa Yo.”
Foster requested that Pineda sing Chicago’s “Hard Habit to Break,” which he did—prompting Cetera, then walking onto the stage, to tease Pineda for taking some of the spotlight from him.

Cetera sang his collaborations with Foster: “Hard to Say I’m Sorry,” “You’re the Inspiration,” “Glory of Love,” with his own hit from Chicago days, “If You Leave Me Now,” thrown in.
When Foster called Charice, the Big Dome shook with applause. Foster looked overwhelmed.
Charice, in a short fuchsia dress and sporting a curly, light brown hair, projected the image of a young woman confidently dealing with all the possibilities the entertainment world could offer.
Her reputation zooming even more following her stint in the TV series “Glee,” Charice couldn’t do anything wrong—even as she, in the first few minutes, seemed detached from her wildly screaming fans.

When she began to sing, everyone momentarily froze.
Whether interpreting Celine Dion or Whitney Houston, Charice seemed in control of everything, tackling the high notes like she had the biggest pair of lungs in the planet, but showing sensitivity when she
approached the soft stanzas.
As she soared in “All By Myself,” one paused to wonder what Charice might be thinking in her private moments, after the adoring fans and the standing ovations shall have come and gone.
It’s too early to tell how the pressures of celebrity life would affect her. But this night, Foster kept reminding her he saw nothing but the best opportunities for her if she kept her feet on the ground.
Everybody stood proud of Charice, thankful to Foster, and lovingly appreciative of having watched one of the most memorable concerts this year.

I've only heard about Charice from posters here...don't think she's really that well-known in the mainstream. But she's only 18, plenty of time and chances to get her name out there. She obviously got the talent.

She had a top 10 album this summer and a #1 hit on Billboard's dance chart. Her real moment of late has been as a guest star on the show Glee. Like Arnel, her story started on Youtube and she got noticed by the right people. Living close to poverty with her mother, abandoned by her father... Oprah had David Foster mentor her and the sky has been the limit ever since. Foster has become a father figure to her and Josh Groban has even become like an older brother. I don't know her long her star will shine but she can definitely sing. One benefit of being so young is that her accent issues are more easily correctable than someone who is older and it will really make it easier for her to fit in with the all American girl types. Her Disney type fan base is the type that can grow up with her and really prolong her longevity in the industry if she plays her cards right
