I am sure this has been discussed before but how did Randy Jackson get to play on After The Fall, this was right in the Prime of Journey?

Thanks

It is more Randy's sound ...was it because they needed a more R&B sound?!?! :?

You got that right. Both Neal and Perry wanted this.

I thought it was still under debate - did anyone get confirmation of this?

We know Perry wanted this as evidenced by actions on the next album (ROR). You know of Neal wanting this from where? (Not that it is impossible, just curious if you have a source).

Someone on one of these boards mentioned that Ross had a cocaine problem around that time and he was "unavailable" for the studio session. Randy popped in as a session player, the gang liked what was laid down and they just went with it. Again, it's what I read on the boards, not sourced from some official statement, so take it for what it's worth.

Someone should go back and look at Herbie Herbert's tell tale writings around the web. He might have covered this topic to a degree. I know I read Herbert state that he threatened to fire Ross early on if his bass playing didn't improve. Herbert said Ross stepped up to the challenge and delivered.
