Missed Opportunity

I have a friend that is affiliated with the Dodgers and he tells me that during the World Series he heard that Journey was asked to perform but, due to "an outside entity," were "blocked" from doing so.

I can only imagine what this means.

Q: There was a rumor going around recently that Steve Perry wanted back in.
A: "Well, that's just that - a rumor. But I can tell you he's still a key component of the decision-making part of the band. Nothing gets played or released without Steve Perry signing off on it. I'm not privy to the details of their arrangement, but I can tell you this: if Steve Perry wanted to be back singing with Journey, everybody would find a way to make that happen."

Oh, it's true. Trust me on that one. And you should be nicer to Neal.

I'm assuming that because Ellen, CBS Sunday Morning and Oprah
were "granted," they're going to leave well enough alone and keep it quiet. But it still doesn't make it right.

So, Black Eyed Peas Doing SB halftime instead of "Da Boyz".
Do you think? No, he wouldn't....would he?
Actually, I would say NOT in this case. FOX said they wanted younger acts for their presentation of the game so that was probably the deciding factor there.

I think if they could do these performances without playing DSB, they might be able to without getting consent. Unfortunately, that is the one song that is usually a mandatory must from the producers.

I wonder what kind of ransom is going to have to be paid for Arnel's Documentary? Maybe that's the hold up on its release?
I know there is fair usage protection for Docs as long as nothing is being promoted in a forward manner. Backround music is fine but using a song title in the Film's name might cost some serious bucks.

Gotta call bullshit on this one, Danielsan. This isn't the same friend that told you JSS was fired because SP wanted back in, was it?
But, I also think that if it were true, I can't say I blame him for standing in front of it. It's no secret how huge a Giants fan he is - that would be the ultimate insult.
"Keep it quiet".... hehehaha.

I don't blame Perry one bit if this is true. The guy was featured in AT+T Park for two games already. How awkward would it be to have a karaoke singer performing YOUR song the next night? Weird.
Besides, if Journey really really wanted to perform without Perry's blessing, they could change the title of the song by a word or so, like they did with Self Defense, changing it to In Self Defense. Just call the song, Don't Stop Believing.
Daniel, you need to let it go. Journey has a year left on the clock. There is going to be no colossal resurgence, no more topping the charts. Your guys dumped Perry, and this is the karma that is biting their collective dicks off. They have a nice little singer to fill in, and they can play their hits all they want. No current Journey fan cares one iota about a new Eastern Hindu release(what, is that Ghandi's great grandchild jacking off in public)? Just get on the road, play your same old set list, and call it a day already.

It COULD have been a one time thing where he just said, "Not during my Moment in the spotlight."
Changing a lyric or melody in a song usually requires permission from ALL the songwriter, unlike a straight up cover. Not sure how they could have got away with that. IF IT COULD BE PROVEN that is was done to take advantage of a promotional opportunity and circumvent copyright law, that wouldn't be pretty.

Nobody dumped him. He can't sing (that catalog) anymore and the last 15+ years of silence has proven that.

Missed opportunity? What missed opportunity? The opportunity for Neil to go out there and play DSB yet again? If he really wanted to take a RARE trip down memory lane. He could try trotting out in Dodger stadium and playing one of his new crap hindu songs and re-live taking a beer bottle against the side of his dome!

Exposure for the new lineup. Granted, they've had some incredible exposure in the last few years, but you can never have enough. I
knew there was something cryptic to Neal's facebook message about "Practicing the
America The Beautiful."

I think everyone who cares already knows Dan. And I'd guess the majority response when reminded of the current lineup is, "Man, they were great back in the day with Perry!" I think the only missed opportunity here is Niel cashing a check. No big loss.

I'm sure they were going to play for free.
That's why there was an issue. paid performances fall under ASCAP and cannot be blocked. Gunbot can explain it a lot better.

If anyone can sing anything live, how would Steve Perry have any say so anyway? I sincerely doubt Steve Perry has the ability to stop Journey from playing any song they wish. releasing Re-records - sure. Getting paid for current earnings - sure. But playing Don't Stop Believin' in front of a bunch of people - uh, can't even imagine that. I could go sing Don't Stop Believin' a Dodger Stadium, right? Without permission. As long as I paid? I'm not a performer, but that's my understanding.

The only other
logical explanation would be that the person who made this
request, of Journey,
mistakingly thought Steve Perry would be at the helm.
Once he discovered this wasn't possible, he put a stop to the whole sha~bang!!

How can they play the Superbowl beer garden, then not be able to play this?

You're kidding, right? How many articles discuss bands performing at the beer garden? The MTV SB pregame special is a bigger ticket for acts looking for publicity.

Maybe because they completely puked and took a shit all over the Superbowl beer garden. Dreadful.

What a prick...his releasing no music while keeping a reign on Journey just shows all he has left is the satisfaction he gets from some thinking he is Journey. If you don't want to be in the music business anymore, fine, enjoy your retirement, you deserve it, just get the fuck out of the way.

I agree with Deano that Journey has one more year left in the spotlight. 2011 Album and Tour. Unless Perry comes back, that is it.

That was an embarrassing performance all the way around....no need to beat it into the ground some more, however, after watching a very unprofessional Pineda shit the bed that day, and looking God awful doing it(the rolling eyes and the already ugly looking face on him), every single Pinoy was stating how Arnie should have kicked Bruce the hell off the stage and performed himself at halftime. I cannot stand those irritating motherfuckers. I deep down wonder if Journey met Springsteen and watched the show from backstage. Typically artists do this kind of favor for one another. I wonder what Pineda thought/thinks about Springsteen? I wonder if he echoes his Pinoy fans, or if he respects him? Didn't Pineda do covers of Bruce too, in addition to Journey and Bryan Adams?

True. Not many bands can do it right this long. How long do you think they have left?

Pineda spoke very highly of Bruce AND John Legend. The pinheads were shitting on both those guys and AP actually went onto his own site to address it.

LOL I know. I read old posts from four, five years ago, and the same thing was being said, that have no more plans past "one" more year in the spotlight as far as a tour. From everything I've read from Arnel, Jon, and Neal last year, they plan on touring a lot longer than one year. Now another album, I have no clue. I guess it depends on how this one sells.

Bad performance for sure, but Arnel most definitely respects Spingsteen and is just a rock/classic rock/AOR fan like most of the people here. He just happened to be plucked out of his familiar turf and placed in front of a hugely popular american band, but I don't think he personally feels he is any better or worse than any other performers. I think he's just trying to do his job and that's why we'll never see anything special from him as far as writing goes.
I don't think you should let the hatred of ridiculous fanatics spread to Pineda himself though as he seems to be one of the most humble.

Yeah, but you're doing just that. Way to call
yourself out.
Rockindeano wrote:after watching a very unprofessional Pineda shit the bed that day
The performance wasn't that good. We know it, he's said it and there's nothing anyone can do about it, but being sick is hardly "unprofessional." And before you open your blow hole about him canceling a pre-arranged charity gig, might I remind you that this will totally fall out of line with your "Journey is just greedy and evil!!!" battle cry. But I get it ... when they do something they're "unprofessional" and when they don't they're greedy. Personally, I think the guy has priorities in rock solid order.
Rockindeano wrote:I wonder what Pineda thought/thinks about Springsteen?
He's probably pretty impressed with the balancing of a demanding tour schedule and how he manages to still sneak in cheating on his wife.
