Which current act compares to the magic of Perry 81/83

Call it oldtimers syndrome, but is there even an act out there today that can come close to capturing the magic
of a Perry fronted Journey in the early 80's? Thoughts??

You could put Jesus motherfucking Christ in The Beatles, and it still wouldn't compare to what Journey had going on live in the early 80's.

On record? live?

Well, for me there is.

I wasn't around to actually see Journey in the classic days, so there is no nostalgia factor there for me.

Ross was obviously talking about the ability to replicate the bass playing live, without him actually doing anything beyond making silly faces and looking like he's at a geriatric convention.

Now, if he was talking about them selling out the Rose Bowl, 3 nights in a row at Staples Center, a week long residency at the O2 or three hits from Revelation in the Hot 100 Top 40, then I would say, "Oh, that magic."

But we know that's not the case.

I think Steveo missed the point. We are talking about what Rock Act currently can equal that which was Journey in 81/83. Really, only U2 or Bon Jovi are the only rock acts that are replicating what Journey did back then.

And talking about an international band, Journey was much bigger in Asian back then they are now, even with Pineda. That market accounted for at least 20 million purchases of their total album sales. This was a band all over MTV in the states, and all over Japanese TV (games shows, variety shows, music shows, etc.). Before ROR sank their ship, they were the biggest American Rock act in Japan bar none and as a live band, the biggest rock act in North America in 1983.

To get an idea of who is one of the biggest American Rock acts in Asia now, Bon Jovi is about to play two sold out shows at the Tokyo Dome (55,000 X 2).

Now, that's magic.

I'm sure a lot of people in the late 60s and early 70s, said nothing in the early 80s as far as music came close to the magic of some of late 60s, early 70s bands and music. That's when my oldest brother says the magic was as far as the music scene and some of his favorite bands or singers. Everybody has their own experience musically at a certain age and time period growing up.

Well, not to pick on you here, but Journey paled to Springsteen live back in "the day" and still do now. People in the industry say Springsteen "invented" the concert. When you play 5-6 hours a night, and it's all live and from the gut, Journey even with Perry, had no chance.

Flame away haters.

By the way Don, Bon Jovi isn't as big as Bruce be it here or overseas. Not quite.

Bon Jovi is bigger in Japan, as far as my argument about an current American Rock Act equivalent to Journey in 83 having success over there.

That's not what the question asked, Holly. It asked if any bands can match the magic of the Perry led Journey classic years. The answer is "yes." Three bands alive today are as good or better than the Journey classic years. U2, E Street and Bon Jovi. All three of the lead singers in these bands can't sing close to Espee, but they are all better front men; I would say JBJ being the weakest of the three, yet he still has something about him that exudes magic on stage. I know Bono is holding on, but Springsteen's never been better and he is 61 fucking years old.

Yes, good point. I don't know why Bruce doesn't visit Japan, but he is bigger in Europe than he is in the States. I do know BJ is quite the selling maching in Europe as well, but to me, I think he is a tick under Springsteen's popularity there as well as here. Speaking of these two acts, both from Jersey and both quite old, it's got to be getting close to farewell tours from both, don't ya think?

You have got to be kidding me?! You don't know who OG is? OG is Brett Favre, the "Old Gunslinger." Dude has started 297 straight games, and now dude has a sprained shoulder and is listed as a game time decision tonight. OG is the greatest QB to ever live. Look over at the NFL thread, about 5 pages back and read on from there. Plenty of OG smack, both pro and con.

Listen, man, Springsteen was and still is, wildly popular, but he had nothing on a live Journey show in the early 80's. Journey offered up the world's greatest vocalist, and arguably rock's best drummer and guitarist. Collectively, Journey dwarfed him and his band in talent, vocals and the concert experience. They invented state of the art lighting, massive big screens and many other facets of concerts. They revolutionized the live concert experience.

This is just personal preference, but whether it's 5 hours or 5 days is completely irrelevant. Listening to guy that has the range of a puddle can never end soon enough. Granted, vocal genius isn't all about range and octaves, but there is nothing that Springsteen could ever do better than Perry, other than do it longer. It's a simple mater of taste. Would you rather a fuck an ugly pig for 5 hours or a hot broad for just 2?

True.

Springsteen sells out stadiums across Europe. BJ - mainly in the UK.

Actually, Journey isn't that well known in Europe at all - they didn't tour here back then.

Still, I'm not at all sure, that what Journey had in the U.S., has ever been equalled here in Europe.

Queen, U2, Pink Floyd, The Who, etc. - I don't think they ever came across over here in the sense that Journey did in the U.S.

Not throughout the continent.

I didn't know this thread would be about sales and selling out stadiums, something I care very little about, so I can't comment on that. Forgive me MG. As far as the "magic" goes, I must be misinterpreting what that means, as I didn't know there was an official definition for the term in relation to music. If I'm going to be objective, then yes, I think there are, indeed, plenty of bands that can match or surpass the musicianship of Journey live and in the studio. Being someone that cares far more about music than vocals, they all give me that same feeling of "magic" each time I listen to them.

If this thread is indeed about sales and stadiums then, I will say the typical U2, Jovi, Springsteen. etc etc.
