man....I don't want to dog too much on Steve A, especially after posting a comment about "All The Things", but this is just sad to hear him sound like this now. And it's current, only a few months back. Very depressing.

SA has never really pulled this one off live.

I prefer this clip, it showcases his strengths.

hes damn near 52 yrs. old, S.P. is near 62, not singing like a 20-30 something shouldnt be
surprising or depressing to anyone. VERY few age without losing the higher end. One of these
two is smart enough not to publicly display this effect.

The quality of the video on youtube is very poor, how can anyone here tell if he's out of tune of not, it's not possible, if he's out of tune, then I guess so is the drums and guitar, and the crowed is way out of tune.

For somebody who is apparantly out of tune, I guess the crowed are tone deaf too!

Hell, I'm a singer myself, I can't even tell, I doubt any vocal coaches here would be able to tell either. Give us a better recording! :)

RJD was a freak. Amazing talent. But I disagree his catalogue was more challenging.
I think the Journey cat is harder.
Toto is another example of hard to sing cat for old guys.

Agreed! Toto songs are killers, but not only the singing parts, the instruments too!, I know good muso's here, and they won't even touch Toto songs! they go... too hard! :)

But he also has his bullhorns pop up like Baghdad Bob and sell us lines of serious bullshit and how "he still sounds as good as anytime in the mid 80's." Hey, we're just going with what we're being told, and we're being told that he's Frontiers/ROR Steve, so we're demanding he sing or shut the fuck up and go away. He perpetuates this. Just like Herbie said, he has this annual/bi-annual need to have his ego stroked so he pops up, gives a lame interview (though this last one was more revealing) and cryptically says, "Remember me, remember me?!?" We do ... and you were an asshole then and you still are.

i was at this show, dont know if the 3 hour rehearsal/soundcheck has something to do with it, but about half the things he did were ok, the rest were poor, althought the crowd ate it up, so maybe i was in a bad spot

Dude, WTF do you care? Why don't you just wait for the next multi-million selling cd by Neil's band? You sound even more bitter than Niel does. You and Neil sound as if it just chaps your ass that people care more about Perry than Neil's band. It comes off as quite pathetic.

I'm doing nothing more than pointing out the divisional hypocrisy in Perry's base of fans. Half say he can sing and doesn't want to and the other half say he won't embarrass himself like Augeri did. The point I was making is that he himself lets it be purported by his close personal friends that claim to have heard him sing, that "he sounds as good as anytime in the mid-80's." As a fan of his voice, this leads to me to question why he wasted his time doing gay interviews that constantly perpetuate the possibility of him singing. Shut up and don't sing or sing if you can, but don't tell us (through your network of bullhorns) that you can, but you're not going to. That's pathetic. And probably also a lie.

I don't need a better recording. That was awful. Hell, he cracks when he talks, let alone sings. He needs to hang it up, for real. This is embarrassing. Oh by the way, his band sucks too.

Oh my, poor Steve A. I'll travel to see him because I respect him as a singer but wow that's some traumatic post-singer voice. The guys voice went through so much and it shows. Sounds terrible but as long as he's out there doing what he loves, more power to him. He has his loyals.

I'd rather hear Steve A healthy. Love this performance ^ Hopelessly in Love.

Dio's voice had lowered over the years, too. Don't kid yourself....he had been tuned down live for years. Still sounded fine, I don't see a problem with it....it was still Dio.

If Steve A. had a chance to go back in time when he made the decision to join Journey, knowing what he knows now, would he really have made a different decision? It's sad to hear what has happened to his voice, but at the same time, if he had not become Journey's lead singer, would he have done anything with it anyway after he left music and became a manager at Gap? I have no idea what being the lead singer of a successful touring rock band and a contributing songwriter on albums pays, but I'm guessing the decade he spent in Journey has secured his financial future in a way that his other job would not while he got a chance to live the dream. Deen can afford a Ferrari, so it must pay pretty well.

Steve A. can sing whatever Journey songs he wants to, and while I understand him wanting to sing the songs he originated, it may be better if he chose songs more suited to his diminished range. He could pick a few off of TBF and a lot of people would probably think he did originate them. (I like TBF and many of the songs are amazing, so it is an opportunity to explore different material with the Journey sound). I certainly wish him the best - he gave the band everything he had and as far as I'm concerned, they threw him under a bus. Good on him for starting over doing what he loves!

This is just one clip, of a song Steve A. never sang particularly well. I think people need to relax. If YouTube existed in 1998, the SA lineup would've been real shortlived.

eh, I don't agree. Perry sang his ass off. Had incredible feeling and his live pitch was absolutely superb. Around Frontiers, the wear started showing, but his pitch and tone was always great. On the ROR tour, you can hear him cracking a lot, but again, his pitch and tone was always great.

Augeri's live pitch was always bad. Always. He never had the kind of power that Perry or Arnel does.
A mutual voice teacher told me once that "Journey has always been a hard gig for Steve (augeri)".
Having said that, I still like him.

SA was offered the chance of a lifetime. Of COURSE he had to take it. Anybody would. Unfortunately, the road made things worse for him and his issues compounded until it ended up the way it did. It's too bad. His recorded stuff is really good. The Tall Stories album was also a great album, but Journey's catalog is extremely tough and it took it's toll on Perry and Augeri both. I'll continue to support his recorded output, though I don't see myself wanting to see him live. I saw him in 98 and I knew then that he wasn't the guy for the gig. Just didn't have the power. I can remember the money note on DSB being sung in falsetto, and a weak one at that. Like I said, I like him, but it was a tough gig for him.

Well put, as usual. Even the boots from the early SA tours were shaky. I just think it's a case of a singer singing out of his range for far too long. Here's Remember Me from his first show. Even here, he sounds like he's pushing. As Herbie has said repeatedly, choosing Chalfant was a no brainer. Failing that, maybe Mickey Thomas.

Mickey Thomas was a great singer! I haven't heard him in years. Is he still singing well? I don't know Chalfant other than The Storm albums. He was good. I did hear clips from his Journey covers album and they didn't do much for me.

That false start on that clip always struck me as weird. Jees, Journey, just go into the song he introduces, circle back and grab the one you missed later. Yeah, it's a bit strainy for sure. That was always a cool song.
