Who is singing backup here?

I think this is one of the only videos where you can clearly hear a voice singing backup from the microphone feed without the backing tape covering it up, but I can't tell who's terrible singing it is.

They were having audio mix issues during that entire show for the online broadcast (Jonathan's keys were missing as well for some of the tracks)...I think we may be hearing a partial background vocal (Neal, or maybe Jonathan), but not as it was intended, so it sounds out of place by itself

**EDIT** - Shit, maybe I'm off, I was thinking this was the download festival...

Here's another look at same song from Download Festival. Deen seems to be backing Arnel.

Sounded like JC's voice to me.

Dumb question:... but I've been wondering about those earplugs musicians wear on stage nowadays. I've heard it being called ear monitors. What exactly, purpose does it serve? It's a recent phenomenon, isn't it? I mean, back in the day, they didn't have anything like that in their ears. It's a wonder if those guys are not all deaf from the loud music destroying their eardrums.

The ear monitors replace the monitors on the front of the stage monitors so the bands can hear themselves. Each member gets their own unique feed mixed to their liking. Whatever helps them better.

Sounds like Deen's missing in the mix.

It's a no-brainer - that's Ross. One of the camera shots reveals it's him. On a number of boots (the Soto soundboard comes to mind as the best example) you can hear him in a similar fashion at the start of AWYWI. There must not be pre-records for that part.

Also on the '83 Norman, OK show, you hear a lot of the backing vocals clearly, with Ross way high up. "Escape" comes to mind as a track where his vox hit you like a ton of bricks.

When you're on stage at any kind of gig, you cannot hear other members of the band without monitors. Sometimes, you can't even hear yourself, particularly if you're singing. So, that just gets them the mix in their ear at the level they like (eg some guys like to hear a lot of guitar and little drums, some like lots of vocal and little bass etc... they can choose the mix they hear on stage while playing). In-ear monitors are just a natural progression from big monitors that would traditionally be at the band members' feet as they played.

I agree with Jason here. Ross's vocals for whatever reason are coming across louder and clearer than the others, even though all of them at one point in time are backing AP. For the most part it is DC, JC and Ross backing him on this video and usually Deen's vocals come across more.

Hmmm...I know Ross is shown on the video singing, but I could swear the backup vocals coming through sounded like Jon's singing voice  . Yeah, strange, where's Deen?

And, thanks for the feedback on my question re the use of in-ear monitor. At one time, I really thought they were earplugs to protect sensitive eardrums  .

At 1:56 is Arnel going up to Ross holding his mic like its a big ol' hardon?
