Cities and crowds

What city are you from, and how big of a crowd do you think that Journey usually get at one of their shows in your area?

I see some people on MR talk about Journey only getting crowds of 3 to 4 thousand per show. Journey consistently have crowds of 20.000 in Cleveland.

Those of you who say that they only get crowds of 3 to 4 thousand per show, do you live in a small town?

1999: Buffalo (w/Foreigner) - Darien Lake: 9,700 (20kish)
2001: Saratoga (w/Waite+Frampton) - SPAC: 9kish (15kish?)
2001: Syracuse (w/Night Ranger) - NYS fairgrounds - 5kish (16ish)
2002: Big Flats (w/Outfield) - TAGS - 5kish (7kish?)
2003: Rochester (w/REO/Styx) - War Memorial - 7kish (12kish)
2003: Buffalo (w/REO/Styx) - HSBC Arena - 16kish (19kish)
2004: Saratoga (alone) - SPAC - 6kish (15kish?)
2005: Saratoga (alone) - SPAC - 12kish (15kish?)
2005: Buffalo (alone) - Darien Lake - 9kish (20kish)
2006: Buffalo (w/Leppard) - Darien Lake - 16kish (20kish)

Last time Journey played L.A., they played two nights at the Greek, which holds 5k. They scheduled one show initially and added a second after the quick sellout. The second show didn't sell out but was close. Obviously, Los Angeles does have the population to support large venues so it's more about if the band itself is considered a big draw. Journey did play the Rose Bowl Here (100k) and did have a string of five sold out Forum shows (a combined 90k) in the early 80s so the fan base was here at one point just not as much now.
One thing about Los Angeles is that is has one of the largest populations of Filipinos here in the states yet that didn't seem to factor into how big a venue Journey played in 2008.
Staples seats 20k for Concerts and then you have the Forum (18k), The Sports Arena (17k) the Hollywood Bowl (17k) and the Nokia Theater (7k) so it will be interesting to see which venue Journey plays in this time around.
Of course being under the banner of Live Nation may control where they are allowed to play and how big of a fee they can get. Staples Center is the one with the biggest payout, not to mention the newest venue with probably the best acoustics.

Forgot to mention the Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal City Walk which seats 6k. I think Steely Dan just had a successful 4 show run there where three concerts were individual album nights and the last show an internet request night.

I'm hoping to see the Rod Stewart/Stevie Nicks show there in April.

Dallas. Superpages.com Center, which is an amphitheater. Holds 20111. I saw them play there in 2006 with Def Leppard, they said the place had never been that oversold. In 2008 with Heart and Cheap Trick it was sold out as well.

In Grand Rapids, Michigan at Van Andel Arena in 2009 Journey and Heart nearly sold out Van Andel with around 10,000+ people there. I also know that they consistently sell out or nearly sell out DTE Energy Music Theatre (Pine Knob Amplitheatre) in Detroit.

Detroit, Chicago, LA, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, and Atlanta seem to be hot beds for Journey.

Damn, too far off from the MB show. That would be a good one.

In New Jersey, Journey typically plays the PNC Bank Arts Center - an ampitheater type venue which has about 7,000 seats and room for several more thousand in the "lawn" area. Last few tours, I haven't seen the place full. But it's a consisently well-attended show.

I was at that show, Eric, if you're referring to The New York State Fair. Front row left side. :)

Back on topic:

Saw 8 gigs on the initial Revelation tour:

-Vegas for the Revelation DVD at Planet Hollywood-SOLD OUT (7,500)

-Private gig for Remax employees-hard to guess attendance at a corporate event but I got hammered and was at the front of the stage most of the night.

-Cleveland-SOLD OUT-It cost me almost $100 to buy my sister a LAWN TICKET. People were begging for tickets and the place holds 20k.

-Dallas-SOLD OUT-20,000 people

-Charlotte_SOLD OUT ... or real close. Was there with Scary Girl, GI Jim, DerriD and 7 Wishes.

-New York State Fair-SOLD OUT-about16k

-Chicago-26,000 people in a driving rain storm. Absolutely horrible weather that day.

-Vegas again at Mandalay Bay-SOLD OUT-9k

Leg 2

Santa Barbara Bowl-SOLD OUT-6k?

If you're in this area for a show again let me know because I'll definitely buy you a beer.

Joan Jett was on the free stage that day. Not too bad. I enjoyed her. And I'll definitely let you know if I go back. That fair was awesome. Man, was it BIG!

I think that Blossom Music Center (Cleveland) holds closer to 22,000?

Anyway, Journey have had sellouts or near sellouts in Cleveland for most of their shows in Cleveland since they reformed with Augeri on vocals. Even the Generations tour show sold out at Blossom, even though there weren't any other bands with them for that show.

In 2008, Journey sold 695,397 tickets out of the 783,617 that were available. 30 shows, out of a total of 57 were sellouts.

I last saw them 2008 here in Albuquerque @ the Hard Rock Pavillion. 15,000 capacity and it was packed!

They wouldn't sell much in my neck of the woods. People here are either country rednecks or MTV pop star wannabes, I feel like a fish out of water. I was at the 2009 show in buffalo and I thought 10k was pretty good considering the last minute date change.
