With JC now relocated to Nashville, building a studio and helping his daughter launch her career... its clear he's setting the stage for the transition away from Journey to the next phase of his life... producing. Nashville is a songwriters town... so it's really a perfect place for JC to be... combined with his kids fledgling career and him being able to be a part of that... I think its no stretch that he'd rather do that than go on tour with Journey and play the same 12 songs over and over again...

So I think JC may be the one to leave Journey 1st...

...and that opens up some interesting possibilities for Neal... who's clearly, at this point in his career, much more interested in playing harder rock than he plays in Journey...

Rollie filling JC's spot could be an interesting thing... (not that Rollie would do it)... it would allow Neal to move back to the pre-Perry era Journey that he loves...

Neal could also go off and start something completely new... with all new members... which may be the likely outcome...

I can't envision Journey without Jonathan Cain. They were good-very good before him, but his songwriting, choruses and melodies put the band over the top. I think he'll stay till the end.

Absolutely, but I think he can juggle both. But, yeah, obviously he has some sort of plan down the line, building that studio and all. Hopefully, it's to be able to record Journey albums right from home! :wink:

Cain had a studio at his old crib so it's only natural he would want one at the new place also. The guy has put out ten solo albums, he obviously likes fucking around in the studio. What's the mystery here?

I could be wrong, but the difference between a "home studio" and a "studio in your home" is pretty large. This seems like a very ambitious (and expensive) venture, and one that's on a much, much larger scale than the last studio. But, again, I could be wrong.

Maybe the difference can be attributed to how much a square foot of real estate might average in Nashville ($200+) VS Marin County ($800+).

BTW, HH looks fantastic, apparently he had a heart attack and has lost a ton of weight. You wouldn't recognize him based on the older photos.

Some more info on Jc's new studio, not a "home studio", but not fully commercial either:

The Studio will be at the property of the Tennessee Drug Addiction Rehab Center of Nashville, In Berryhill on East Iris (Just down the road from my Current Studio on Azalea Pl.) The Plans have been Approved (The pics I showed Bob) but we haven't broken Ground yet... that'll be the Jan 5th date - hope to be ready late Spring.

We'll Consider this mostly a "Semi Private" Facility, that'll be for Jon's work, and My work (I'm moving out of my current facility, and we're building my Mix Room here as well - so my Overdub / Mixing and tracking room will be a more "Full time for My Stuff Room" as I produce 3 or 4 records a year, and Mix 5 or 10 - I have an assistant that will be in the room full time, so I imaging a few other producers / engineers / friends of Cain and Mine... will straggle in , and use the room fro time to time, when I'm not on lock down (Which is not very often)

As for the Tracking room / Control Room A - yes, there's be engineers, and a Studio manager booking the room for Sessions, and Cain will block it off, or put a stop to it all, whe he needs the room.

) There are a lot better recent pictures out there. I didn't notice this before but his jacket has the company logo "Nocturne." Sooo...I guessing I was wrong about him leaving the company.

From what I've heard you're right about Neal and Herbie buying it out, but I believe they ended up with other partners. Neal selling out was something I heard recently, maybe SJ posted it here?

Pretty sure I remember reading an interview with Herbie - maybe THE interview?? - where he said Neal thought the company was worthless and wanted to sell it off and Herbie told him it would keep his bills paid forever. "Smartest thing Neal ever did was keeping his share of Nocturne" is a quote I recall or something like that.

From Andrew's interview with Herbie:

Our stage and our barricades and the design and they were portable and they were put together and they were bullet proof. You could not bend or break these barricades and so you know, just good stuff like that.
I wondered, I've always wondered, I guess that Journey just didn't get that. It wasn't on their radar, it certainly wasn't a source of pride for them. And in '84 I came to find out that they had had a meeting with Joe Brown with a production sound company in England and offered to sell him Nocturne. And for what they basically hadn't been repaid. They invested two million and they recaptured a million two fifty of it and so they were outstanding, unearned three quarters of a million dollars. Hey, we were only a couple years into it at that point and they're earning back quickly and so the offered to sell it and that's when I said I'll buy it. That's just crazy. I'll buy it for that very same price. It does over 20 million a year you know. What were these guys thinking? Holy shit. Neal stayed in on Nocturne.

He's the only one that did and all the other guys must just be scratching their asses. What the hell, you know? And that was really Steve Perry that was the influence to say liquidate the investments, liquidate the real estate, liquidate the production company and he must have brushed a hundred million dollars off the table right there. And you know what? These guys should want to beat the livin' shit out of this guy. He cost them so much. He cost them so much.

But he is supposedly so shrewd and a good business guy...sounds like the same sleeze that Herbie said kept popping up trying to make an easy score in the days before Herbie heard his demo tape.

Ironic that practically everybody in Mr Big took a swing at Eric Martin at some point yet they are back together...but Neal never took it upon himself to try to give Perry a much needed nose job.
