After The Fall

Does this song sound too much like an ROR tune for the band to put it in the setlist? I've been listening to it a few times this afternoon and I like it more now than I did back when it was released, though I think vocally, it's more in Deen's wheel house than Arnel's.

I've always loved this song and seen it as the natural companion to IBAWY (hence explaining its following that track on The Essential Journey). It definitely hints at the RoR sound that was to come, but I think Neal's presence throughout distinguishes it from the RoR sound. Definitely makes it a little heavier. Great tune.

Deen's nailed this one more than once in concert. I almost shit when they played it live. Here it is from many years ago in Florida (not the show I heard it at):

I love Deen, but personally, I'd rather keep the vocals downstage center. Every time he has to take "Mother Father" or "Still They Ride," I feel like it's a blatant reminder of the hole Perry left in his wake.
If you have a lead singer, let him lead and let him sing.

That's my two cents.

Let Arnel butcher a few songs that Deen has been handling and there is going to be hell to pay. Arnel singing Mother Father stepped down? Let the bashing commence.

It's a band and a collective effort. You give the fans the rendition that's the best, and sometimes that isn't Arnel. And that's ok. Egos get checked at the door in this band. 8)

Arnel is a baritone heavy tenor. Some Journey songs still need that Alto and Deen can do it effortlessly. And it gives Arnel a breather to boot. Even Richie spells Jon in Bon Jovi now days. These guys ain't young any more.

If that's where the bar is, we might as well let Deen take the whole catalog. I'm not sure Arnel does any song that much better than Deen, but if I'm going to see Journey perform live, I want a lead singer up front in my grill. When Deen is singing, I feel like I'm watching Triumph.

I agree. JRNY wants to play the songs in the original keys, so it's a challenge for AP every night, as was for JSS, SA e SP. It's good for Arnel to rest his voice for 2 or 3 songs in the set. The two first bands that I heard in my life (Queen and Kiss) has/have more than a singer and I believe that's an advantage.

Nothing wrong with Deen singing a couple, it will only happen with the longer shows, he isn't likely to sing if they're playing 75 or minutes in a package show. Deen is particularly Perry-ish on the stuff where Stevie Paxil's voice had become raspy.

I strongly prefer Deen's singing over Arnels's. I'd pay more to see a concert where Deen sang everything than for a concert with Deen doing 3 songs and Arnel doing the rest.

Deen- Faithfully

Really like Deen's voice too, especially on Still They Ride, great soulful delivery on that one. It's my favorite Journey song, and I think he does it pretty good justice. :)

Always liked this tune. Never understood why it was bashed by so many.

I think Deen can sing anything from Captured and back with ease. From Escape forward, I think he needs to pick and choose as he has the type of voice that might get very shrill on certain material, just like many other heavy metal singers.

Wow...
I wonder who chooses the songs for Deen to sing, because he just nails the perryisms in all the songs he sings in concert.
I first heard ATF on the GH dvd and didn't think much of it (probably due to the silly video). But, later, listening to it on the album track and concert boots...I just love the song now....one of their best...great vocals and musicianship.
During the Frontiers promo, it was mentioned that SP had the song mainly written when they got together in the studio. And then, later, with ROR, he said IBAWY was the sequel to ATF. Funny, someone pointed out that these 2 songs were placed in sequence on the Essentials cd-set (I didn't notice that).

Agree ...Deen
does a great job on the songs he sings and I prefer that voice ...after reading G~boy, it makes sense
why he doesn't sing more. Course, I thought he just didn't want to!!

From what I understand, MG, it's a little bit of both. Deen's not a singer, and backing vocals alone probably extend his voice to it's outer boundaries, so singing those older Perry songs are probably not real high on his priority list ... and understandably so. Additionally, he did tear a vocal cord about a decade back and that's why he doesn't project as well as he did before. But he never had the power of Perry or Pineda to begin with.

You also gotta remember he is sitting, bent over behind a kit and playing at the same time, so I would image there would be more power, etc. if the focus was just singing. I think he does pretty well on the early stuff too. Patiently ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyhYD9KJmiU

He did at least 4 or 5 on this Augeri era show.......Patiently, Where Were You, La Do Da and I think Something To Hide, too.

Great point, Deb! 8) And I believe there was an instance where he came out from behind the kit and sang, but I have no idea if it's recorded or not. Mugs Cain on drums perhaps? Can't remember.

I've got a dvd copy of a Journey show from London I think it is, where JSS definitely does After The Fall justice too. If I have time this weekend maybe I'll try to youtube it. Same with Open The Door, excellent job.

Heard JSS sing Open The Door live at the HOB here, was amazing.
