Does anyone think that Neal's voice is similar to Hendrix? Check out this live gem called Karma off of the Next album that Neal sings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyLvShfCSB8

They say that back in the mid 70's that Neal couldn't sing worth a damn.

But over the years he turned himself into a decent singer.

I've always thought that there are two obvious influences on Neal's vocals, those being Jimi Hendrix and Gregg Rolie.

Without a doubt. VERY Hendrix. In a good way.

God damn, his guitar sounds awesome on this track. Wish he would go back to whatever he was doing here. Whatever he's doing now sounds over produced. Too slick. Prefer this sound. Analog baby, analog.

I wonder why Hendrix never hired a slick tenor like Neal did?

I've heard Karma hundreds of times over the years and it never dawned on me until you mentioned it how Hendrix-inspired the track is. While I'm not a Hendrix loon, I think I like Karma even more now that you've pointed it out

It's a cool song. I actually like Neal's singing (No, it's not a comparison to Perry or Arnel, chill people  ) he has a gritty, tough sound. I wish he would have sung on Piranha Blues rather than bringing in a singer, then that might have been a cool album.

I've always heard a similarity between Neal and Jimi- but I hear some Clapton and Rolie in this as well. Man, I love his guitar tone from the 70's up through Departure- just killer- he uses too much digital stuff now.

Because he didn't want to let go of the steering wheel!

Makes no sense to me. I hear some artists like Bun E Carlos from Cheap Trick sell bootlegs of their own shows from their websites. Seems smart!

YES. I have thought so since I first heard the Schon and Hammer album.

Always felt Neal's vocals were influenced more by Rolie, but on this track (and especially on this live version) you can definitely here the Hendrix style vocal from Neal. Guitar wise, Karma has always had that Hendrix vibe going on.

Really love Neal's early Journey stuff. Different, but so, so tasty. 8)

Right! Neal was only a boy, though. Those bad men manipulated him.

I've always thought it would be awesome if Neal did a full Hendrix tribute album

Yes, I know about that one. I was thinking Neal could do a full (not an EP) album with him covering all the vocals (no Paul Rodgers)

I'd love it. He could even bring back the fro for added effect. Seriously, he could play and sing Hendrix, and maybe some of his other heroes and influences. Maybe a guest vocalist on one or two.

At the end of the Karma concert audio, did Neal say, "Let's get crazy" ? I wonder what happened just after the audio-clip ended. I wonder if they really did get crazy.....

Amen, just plug in Neal and wail like back in the day, maybe some wah, a tube screamer, delay, chorus- leave the rest of the digital junk alone.
