OT: Just got back from Bob Seger at HSBC Arena

Postby Archetype » Sun Apr 10, 2011 3:29 pm

Well, that was a nice surprise.

Really, I had no idea I would be going to a concert until about 20 minutes before we left for Buffalo. My brother called me up and said that my uncle has an extra ticket to Bob Seger if I want to join them. So I made an on-the-spot decision for the rest of the night and decided to go. I went up thinking that I knew only one song (Turn The Page) but left the concert realizing that I knew at least half of the songs from the roughly two hour set. I took some pictures that I'm working on uploading.

Well I obviously can't really give a setlist or anything like that, but I had a great time. The opening act was Frankie Ballard; some younger country artist who I found out this morning will be touring with Taylor Swift in the near future. For country, it was at least tolerable, but I really think that they could have chosen a better opening act. My uncle was getting really irritated and I was too. Country just isn't my thing. He had an incredibly annoying song titled "Buncha Girls" that was just downright suicide-inducing. But, he closed with CCR's "Fortunate Son" which was kind of neat.

Bob Seger and his twelve member band put on a terrific performance. The vocal mix was atrocious for the first few songs, but the sound engineers managed to get that worked out. I was blown away by the performance of "Turn The Page" espeically since I've been getting into music with a lot of saxophone in it lately. They played from 8:45 until 11:00 but took a short intermission during the set. Bob said he was getting over a cold and doing the best he could; his vocals were great, so his efforts paid off. He had to cancel Cleveland the other night due to the cold. The stage was pretty plain, but had an interesting lighting setup.

A few cons:
The two fat hog women behind me who kept screaming "take your pants off" to anyone and everyone, and then screaming obnoxiously loudly every two seconds throughout the entire concert. Then there was the prick two seats down from me who was absolutely plastered and wouldn't stop shitting himself. Then directly in front of me, a fucking cocksucker piece of shit lit up a joint and was engulfing all of us with his obnoxious fumes, which gave me a terrible headache. I want to become a concert security guard just so I can beat the shit out of these people, because the guards at HSBC were not doing their job and beating the piss out of them like they deserved. I have never been part of a more unbearable crowd, and I've been to many, many concerts, including Ozzfest, Styx and their various touring partners seven times (Including Journey on the Main Event Tour) Kansas, Iron Maiden, Rob Zombie, Godsmack, Blue Oyster Cult, Peter Frampton, Rush, and a few others. NEVER had to deal with such an awful crowd.

But, Seger was good.

Translation: they fixed the Auto Tune.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Seger blows donkey balls. I've seen him twice and was as unimpressed with Old Man Seger as I was with the Janitor.

That's Stephen Miller, for those of you outside the loop.

No, it wasn't a problem with his voice, but just that his mic wasn't turned up loud enough. I couldn't hear him over the band playing.

That crowd doesn't surprise me, Seger has always catered to the backwoods redneck crowd. That was probably the first time they've been outside the trailer park.

Seger's appal has definitely been predominantly south of the Mason-Dixon line, to be sure.

Absolutely not. Seger has universal appeal. He's the Midwest version of Springsteen. Silly assessment.

I know he has fans outside the trailer park, I'm just not one of them. If you did a survey I bet you would find that 80-90% of his fans would fit my description. I never mentioned anything about the mason-dixon line either, so don't light my ass on fire for that one. :D

Seger is a living legend. I disagree with those who want to diss him. They should be hung from a tree and their toe nails cooked with a white hot torch, castrated, then finally, their asses shot off. You just don't go disrespecting the Bob!

This is rock and roll, not an orchestra. I've seen plenty of trailer park types at shows of all kinds, from Dream Theater to Seger to Journey to Gin Blossoms. Music attracts all kinds (even rap, unfortunately). In fact, I'd say the 80s band concerts, and not the 60s/70s concerts I've been to have featured the most trailer park type attendees.

What does that have to do with anything anyway?

This is funny as shit. My rant thread mentioned the same thing.
You don't dare ask what a cover of a Perry song is doing in the Journey thread, however.
