I'm sure there is good reason for this being posted in the Journey forum, I just haven't figured out why yet.

I loved Virgil Donati in Soul SirkUS!! He was amazing and his sticks were often just a blur. I know Deen C made a comment about something Donati was able to do, that was impossible for him. I just can't remember what!! :? :? He's obviously a well respected fantastic drummer.

Looks Journey related to me. Carry on.

Would be awesome if Virgil gets the position and then uses his connection with Neal to get a Journey/Dream Theater tour in the works 8) That would sell big time.

This video I found is really cool. The slow-motion high-definition footage of the cymbal being hit is insane

Thanks for posting this. Really cool of them filming the audition process and sticking it on YouTube. Wish Neal and Jon had done the same thing back when they auditioned for the Augeri era. Would have liked to have seen how the other auditions went. Especially Geoff Tate's.

Are the other episodes available yet or did they just start? Could only find the one you linked.

I used to be a diehard DT fan and still love their music, but I don't follow the goings-on as much. I'm seeing a YT comment on this video that Portnoy tried to return to the band in december? Any one who has been following it closely know if that's true?

EDIT: Looks like it's true.

http://www.mikeportnoy.com/forum/tm.asp ... =1#2622467

I never really cared much for Portnoy and his personality as he came across on all the documentaries and commentaries they did on all their DVDs. This post kind of confirms it.

Steve Smith, if he felt so inclined, could walk in there and say, "When do I start?" 8)

Based on the video content alone or is this inside info?

That's interesting. Based on the interview given by the guitarist on the audition documentary, he sounded like he was pining for Portnoy's return. So much for that.

They were choosing their words very carefully on that video... and smartly so. DT, like other prog rock bands (Rush for example), has a DIEHARD cult fan following that is very much tied to the Internet. Portnoy himself is VERY active on his forum, and DT has always gotten their name out to the masses by being great with their fans in terms of communication, giving them extras (Christmas bootleg downloads) and the like.

Like any other band, diehard DT fans have allegiances to and favorite members in the band (think the Perry vs Neal battles here). The only difference is nearly EVERY DT fan is as diehard as the most hardcore, diehard Journey fans on here, whereas the bulk of people going to Journey concerts only go to hear DSB regardless of Perry being there. The guys in the band don't want to lose any fans by being overly negative towards Portnoy.

I don't think anything irreparable happened, but Portnoy himself is on record as saying there was friction behind the scenes and it was time for a break. I think in hindsight the guys would agree.

Plus, Portnoy asked to return to DT only after Avenged Sevenfold (a shit band BTW) gave him the boot at the end of 2010. I'd feel slighted too.

You're absolutely correct. I just think he's good enough and well-rounded enough (like most female Perry fans) to play any kind of music well at a very high level. The guy is the best.

Journey would go over well at a Dream Theater concert, but DT would not go over well at a Journey concert if you follow me there.

It works great if you want to chase all the "Open Arms" fans away. I know I'd love it, but if it sold it would definitely get the award for the most creative tour!! :D

I'm bettin' Neal and Deen would be in Heaven!!

I actually really seriously like the idea of a Journey/Dream Theater tour. Most Dream Theater fans like Journey, and the ones who don't would be exposed to Journey's musical prowess (Definitely would want to dig out La Raza Del Dol, Of A Lifetime, etc) I would also wager than a lot of Journey fans would appreciate Dream Theater's ridiculous musical ability, and songs like "Wither" and "I Walk Beside You" would probably be pretty well-received by even casual Journey fans who have never heard of Dream Theater. It would be a hell of a lot more interesting than Foreigner and Night Ranger. Would probably sell just as well, if not better. There are hordes of Dream Theater fans who try to go to every stop of every Dream Theater tour. This happened when they toured with Iron Maiden last summer. We talked to a guy who saw the show seven times because of DT; he was only a casual fan of Iron Maiden. Journey could win over a pretty sizable number of those types of Dream Theater fans if they did La Raza Del Sol every night with the extended solos/keyboard-guitar duel. Not to mention the fact that it would give Journey the chance to play Eclipse material for an audience that would probably be very receptive to it.

Yeah, you're right, but I think at least a quarter of the Journey crowd would appreciate it and that's still a lot. Great crossover potential for Journey. Also a GREAT TIME to play Eclipse front to back. And then The Dozen.

Eddie Trunk announced it was Mangini a month ago.

This is the stupidest publicity stunt I've seen in awhile. DT is a band I've enjoyed for many years, but this "buildup" to something the whole internet already knows is just making them look stupid (and overly dramatic, and not in a good musical way).

DT tries to be RUSH, and that's impossible. I haven't been Shania Twained by them. 20+ minute epics are a thing of the past, and musical masturbation is tacky. Christ, even Lifeson don't wank on his solos...I liked I&W....that's about it.

Labrie's former group - Winter Rose, was better....

I just did a 'hit and run' in the Styx forum; film at eleven.
Now, back to my Bev-Mo special of the week - Pabst Blue Ribbon.
