I'm going to go out on a limb and say James Durbin's performance of Don't Stop Believin' will be the proverbial straw that finally breaks the song's momentum and signifies it's descent back out of the public consciousness.
Reading all the comments around the internet about what happened last night, one theme is common, more so than Jame's screeching voice and Haley getting the sympathy vote; it's the term 'overplayed'.
Maybe it's finally time to Stop Believin'.

There are plenty of other good songs in the Journey arsenal.
To say everyone involved has flat worn this song out is an understatement.
So maybe instead of people going out and buying more GH albums, they are
saying make it go away?

The people interested in those will show up at the concerts. From a retail standpoint, it may finally be time for Journey to join it's peers as far as moving product is concerned.

Well, Perry can now go back enjoy his retirement undisturbed .....OR......... can realize that the DSB gravy train is coming to a stop and it might be time for him to do something, anything to make sure he doesn't disappear back into obscurity in the very foreseeable future.

Watch the song take off again and me eating crow six months from now.

Perhaps he's going to have some sort of big announcement in June/July? :)

I don't know about that; Separate Ways has popped up in Yes Man and Tron 2, so I could see that song succeeding DSB in the media in the future.

It's not going to have a run like DSB did, not without being hitched to some top rated TV show or Movie. The only legacy rock song from the '80s currently even close to the success of DSB is 'Living On A Prayer' which continues to have a top 20 presence on iTune charts all over the world.

The past hits and the ever presence of Perry in all things Journey needs to go away for awhile, if just for the band to get a little breathing room to redefine itself with new material.

I suppose that's a good point.

And hell, if distancing Perry and the old 80 classics gives the band more room to rebuild themselves on Arnel and the new material, then I'm totally for that.

Seriously, I'd love to see Journey do at least ONE concert playing a setlist comprised entirely lesser known songs (the most well-known of those numbers being on the line of 'Edge of the Blade', 'Mother, Father' or 'Winds of March' or perhaps something from the Augeri era). A concert for the die-hard Journey fans.

I would call it the Journey gravy train and it's not coming to an end. They're probably paying Perry a shit load of money to pay the dirty dozen at every concert plus album sales and radio airplay royalties. I'll bet he's making just as much, if not more, than Neal, Ross and Jonathan are.

My daughter bought herself a "teen girl style" Journey shirt in a TEEN store the other day. She told me lots of kids wear Journey shirts now, and she gets irritated asking them if they even know who Journey are. And she said a couple of them have said, "of course, duh, Don't Stop Believin" And my daughter said it bugs her because they are so much more than that song! That song has given them popularity with the youth. No matter how tired us old folks are, the youth love it!

They don't have to pay Perry for the songs they play in concert.
The big money is in licensing the usage of the song and I really believe that it has reached its zenith and the requests will start to ebb now as the song has long since passed 100% saturation in most markets.

I understand that it's not going to disappear overnight but I betting that it will pretty much have slowed down when the second half of the Eclipse tour starts in 2012.

Not really. I still enjoy the hell out of the song. But I have really never heard it on television, other than in The Soprano's finale, and hardly ever hear it on the radio. So, for me, it's still a great song. But I don't watch Glee, AI, Family Guy or any of the other shows that have played it to death.

I have an odd combination of love and hate towards the song. On the one hand, it's hooky and a great song, but on the other hand, it HAS been overplayed for me.

There are a few songs overseas that are very close to DSB territory, sitting in the top 40 of many charts week in and out.
Bring Me To Life
Living In A Prayer
Don't Want To Miss A Thing

I think the difference here is those songs just sell, where as DSB is (allegedly) in your face, at least here in the states if you watch a lot of TV and follow the popular programs. I think the radio is the song's weakest proponent to tell the truth as Who's Crying Now seems to have gotten much more airplay over the years, at least in my neck of the woods.

I do agree that I've been hearing Who's Crying Now a lot more on the radio nowadays.

And I can certainly see those aforementioned songs still getting a lot of airplay. Not to mention how many teenagers and young adults make AMVs with those songs on YouTube.

WCN being included on a DVD that sold over ten million copies
(Monsters VS Aliens) didn't hurt its exposure either.

It sounded great in that movie too. They beefed up the bass drum beat and made it rockier.

By the middle of the tour, there will be people here and on the Arnel/Journey forums asking for more/specific ballads and mid-tempo songs to be included in the setlist.
Happens every tour.
