The Loop FM 98 in Chicago is giving away a trip to see Journey in Paris the commercial ran and I heard six songs to promote it Every song was Steve Perry singing what a joke, This band can't live on their own what a shame.

Alas, the questionable tastes of the common rabble have thrust this situation upon us.
It's a shame, too, because I firmly believe that 1996-2011-era Journey soundly kicks the ass of 1973-1986-era Journey, all things considered.

Considering that The Loop plays 99% classic rock songs, I'd say that the commercial wasn't surprising. Besides, the 80's musical bus had left the terminal long before Perry left and that's why you don't hear any TBF songs played either.

I think you and I should be BFFs, Gideon. I full-heartedly believe the Augeri and Arnel line-ups both are better than the Perry line-ups.

Credit needs to be given where it's due: Perry (from 1978 to 1983) certainly had the best voice the band had ever seen. And from 1983-1986, he was my favorite singer.
But I think the quality of the songs and musicianship has only improved since he relinquished command.

I'll give you the pre-1980 garbage and the post-1984, 80 proof, sissified attempt at sounding like Bananarama, but you can't touch Escape and, especially, Frontiers.

I suppose that's true enough, Perry was incredible, but I have to be honest that Arnel's voice is the one that does it for me. Just personal preference in the more subtle differences between the three singers.

Though at the core of it all, you're definitely right that the songs and musicianship has improved since he left. I think part of it has to do with the addition of Deen on drums and his wonderful back-up vocals in unison with either Augeri or Arnel. And on his own live for that matter.

I just tend to play newer era music of my favorite bands and go back somewhat only every once in a while. Like I will play Infinity and Departure rarely. The songs I like are either on greatest hits or I've downloaded to my iPod and not the whole album. Even for my beloved U2 I tend to get into the last era and some 90s stuff and go back on greatest hits on the older stuff rarely.

I agree that Smith was superior on drums overall, but I do think that when you include what Deen brings to the equation with his vocals, he's helped make the band grow a bit.
