If Journey was to release only three albums

Postby Archetype » Mon May 23, 2011 9:25 am

Alright, lets imagine that Journey goes back in time and decides to be like Boston and be very scarce when it comes to releasing albums. What would be the best way combination for enjoyable music and success with three albums?

Journey (Very strong album. Not a bad track)
Escape (Obvious)
Trial By Fire (Truly a masterpiece. Had this album been released during the hey day, I'm quite sure that it would have done as well if not better than Escape)

Disclaimer: I'm not an Eclipse hater; just haven't heard it in its entirety yet. I love the 1:20 samples that were up.

Departure - tough call between Infinity and Departure, but I do listen to Departure more. One of their early albums has to be named that has Rolie because it defined their early sound.

Frontiers - if the hadn't left off Only The Young and Ask the Lonely, this would be their masterpiece and showed them evolving.

Arrival - The moodiness and emotion of this album will always get to me, plus I like listening to newer music of bands. Love Neal's playing.

Reasons for not choosing

Escape - I skip too many songs Never play it. The songs I love are on their GH and Time 3. (But you said "success," so I'm sure it should be picked, because it was their biggest seller.)
Evolution - not a big fan. I gave the CD away.
ROR - too dated, but Steve sounds amazing
TBF - Some of their best modern music. Tremendous sound production. Neal's playing really moves me, but I can't help it, Steve's hollow upper range is so noticeable and tin sounding that it bothers my ears when he hits those notes in certain songs I wish it didn't and have tried to get past it. I didn't really notice that on FTLOSM. Other than that, some of his best singing on TBF, save a song. Plus there were so many sad ballads loaded in there heavily the second half..
Revelation, too rushed of an album; yet has some great songs on there that were actually better live and shows why Arnel was a good pick for the band.
Eclipse is too new. I don't even have the CD yet. But it has some truly amazing songs.

Frontiers - By far the best Perry-era Journey album IMHO. I agree with Jana that they should've kept "Only The Young" and "Ask The Lonely" on the original album.
Arrival - Up until a few days ago, this was my favorite Journey album. Great album and proof the band didn't need Perry to continue.
Eclipse - This is easily my new favorite Journey album. Great production, along with some of the best musicianship in the band's history and finally coupled with the right voice to suit the heavy material.

Seriously, if any of you thought it was gonna be all Perry-era albums from me, you're crazy.

Frontiers w/ ATL and OTL

Other than that, Arrival, Trial By Fire, and Eclipse battle it out for the other two positions.

Frontiers
Arrival (yes,, I like this better than TBF)
Eclipse

ROR has a few good songs, but is generally a POS. I got mad at Perry for that one, so sorry.

I regret to inform you that the Loon High Council has issued a kill order on you.
In that regard, I believe you'll find newfound appreciation for the BGTY lyric about "caught on a crossfire."

I agree with so much of what you wrote. I'm going with (chronologically):

Infinity
Arrival
Eclipse

With Escape & Frontiers falling just below the line. But, hey, that's 5 amazing albums! And when it's that hard to choose, it just reinforces why this is my favorite band.

So true. It kills me to leave Infinity out Infinity is the only Journey album I've listened to for a while (except now the new album), that has stayed in my CD player in my car. And I listened today, and iI love Infinity. Departure/Infinity such a toss up. Maybe I was wrong and it should have been Infinity. Love them both.
