Revelation and Eclipse together

Postby Majestic » Tue May 24, 2011 6:14 pm

I started listening to Eclipse and Revelation together, and what I'm hearing sounds great. Journey wanted to go for their legacy sound, and I'm not sure if everyone agrees about that, but the last few years Journey has cranked out some very nice music after being silent for a decade and then foundering for nearly another other one. What a surprise. Seriously.

It's funny you bring this up, because I was designing a nice bastard album for my iPod taken from Eclipse and Revelation:

Edge of the Moment
Chain of Love
Change for the Better
She's A Mystery
Resonate
Anything Is Possible
What I Needed
Human Feel
Wildest Dream
To Who It May Concern
Ritual

It's a shame because while Change For the Better and Wildest Dream are both fantastic songs (especially live) they are far too 'clean' on the studio release to fit with Eclipse's grit. If only they'd been recorded differently.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

Nice album you've got there. Of course if you mix 2 great albums you get a great album. I never cared for wildest dream, but Change for the Better is a good song that could have been better. Many of the Revelation tracks were much better live. I think this only shows they needed to take more time with the album and maybe had someone other than Shirley who doesn't really seem to get Journey music in my opinion.

I really liked Revelation initially. But it was definitely a modern Journey-by-the-numbers and, if Eclipse is a 4/5 with me, Revelation would be (at best) a 3/5.
'Change For the Better' is simply extraordinary. It's Journey's new-age 'Escape' with its message, structure, and style. 'Wildest Dream' has an excellent chorus and a great rhythm section and these two are the strongest tracks from Revelation IMHO.

I don't love Revelation as an album, per se, but at the same time there are a lot of songs on there that I think are some of Journey's best in a very long time. My Eclipse/Revelation mash up consists of 21 tracks. Basically I subtracted Human Feel, What it Takes to Win, and Wildest Dream. Even though we differ a little on the songs we cut from our mix, that is a lot of good music in a few years. I'd even throw in a couple from Generations, because Deen is still in the current line up and both of his Generations tunes are great.
