Make another Eclipse style album, but even better. (Another big rocker)
Disc 2 would be a high quality mid tempo rock and ballad disc, with great writing.

I like Eclipse, but it's gonna be scary to some fans. Why not give them the best
of both worlds?

Going back and listening to Trial By Fire, I have a renewed appreciation for just what Perry brought to the table as an artist. I've always said that what made TBF so great was that his voice was no longer the juggernaut it once was; Perry entered the songwriting equation as more of an equal, I think, than was the case in Raised On Radio: The rest of the band had plenty of moments to shine on the record.

I still maintain that Perry isn't half the songwriter Cain is nor half the musician Schon is, but is somewhere in between and the conduit through which Journey's most memorable music was crafted. Arnel had some moments in "To Whom It May Concern" and "She's a Mystery" but I'm not seeing him as Perry's equal in this department.

For their next album, I believe they need to continue under Neal's direction but work with another venerable songwriter/artist like Perry or Jack Blades.

I think they need to see how this album shakes out. When you throw out the second disc, Revelation still sold 880,000 units. If Eclipse doesn't reach gold, then you look back at the last album that did and adjust your formula accordingly.

You can't do two disks of new material. That will be a lot of filler. It used to be ten songs were on albums. Now it's 12 to 14. To write 12 good songs is a feat enough, without trying for a second disk. They need to do a live album for the second disk. But the way they're promoting this album (which is not), if the sales aren't strong enough, there won't be another album, or if there is one, it won't be for a long time.

I love that idea!!!

Give Neal one of his ROCKING albums.
And give Jonathan one of his mid-tempo and ballad albums.

That way everyone wins. Both Neal and Jonathan get to do their kind of Journey album, and all of the fans are pretty much guaranteed of getting an album that they love.

A live album would be great, but as soon as any of the classics are recorded it would
put Perry back on the payroll and I don't think the band wants to continue that relationship.

Like Foo Fighters did with "In Your Honor". Was a 2 Disc set. One all acoustic, one all rockers.

Maybe we should see how this one does first. It will be at least a month before we can establish a sales trend to see if Eclipse has the retail steadiness of Revelation or if it hits the wall after all the diehards make their purchases.

Certainly Perry was a better songwriter on his works than Arnel is on Eclipse, but I'm curious to see if the more chances he gets to write music with Neal and Jonathan, if Arnel's songwriting skills may improve over time.

That said, I'd LOVE to see Jack Blades return on the next album with songwriting credits. Arrival is my second favorite Journey album, and certainly my favorite when it comes to the classic 80s Journey sound (As much as I love Eclipse, that album more harkens to Trial by Fire than anything else).

And while I feel a tad bit treacherous towards Ross Valory for saying this, because I DO respect Ross, I actually wouldn't mind seeing Jack Blades join the band. But perhaps, the chance of that happening depends on when Ross would decide it's time for him to retire. He IS the eldest band member in Journey after all, and may decide to call it quits before the band as a whole decides to do the same. If that should happen, I'd definitely think the band should aim for Jack Blades as Ross' replacement.

Not only would that make the songwriting even better, but just think: Arnel's lead voice, with Deen and Jack on back-up vocals and possibly even trade-off vocals here and there.

are you Feelin That Way, too?

I would be very surprised if Journey released another full studio album of new stuff. Let's face it, what carried Revelation was the fact that the classics were part of the package, and the resurgence of Don't Stop Believing was in full swing. Now, we have a single new album that has to survive all on its own. It's not getting radio airplay at all (I haven't heard anything.) The Walmart deal helps, and I think they were able to land another Walmart deal for this album because of the mild success they had with selling the Revelation package. If Eclipse under performs in sales to the public, then Walmart won't do anymore exclusives with this band, or either they won't choose to purchase as much inventory on the next release (although again, I'd be surprised if there is one) which means lower album sales for Journey.

What I think would be a cool thing for the band to do, and would appease fans, past and present, would be to release a box set live package. This package would feature vocalists and other members of Journey, past and present. It could be a DVD/CD package (maybe even a vinyl release for us vinyl lovers,) and would contain live performances from all incarnations of the band. Meaning, members past and present. It could even go back to Pre-Perry era all the way up through today. To take it a step further, we could maybe finally get the live material from the Raised on Radio tour. That would be the Holy Grail for the Perry Loons! For the Augeri fans, their could be live performances of Augeri era music, and the same for Arnel Pineda era Journey stuff. There would be something for everybody, and this would be a win-win for any Journey fan. To also appease those who must have new studio music, the band could record a few new songs to stick in there, maybe have a DVD of videos for the new songs. I'm not really a huge fan of the band like I was before, but I would jump on purchasing something like this in a heartbeat! In a perfect world, you could have new songs from past vocalists (don't laugh I said in a perfect world,) but if not, I think this idea would make the most sense would be the most lucrative deal for Journey after Eclipse.
