USA Today review

Postby carleysdad » Wed May 25, 2011 10:30 pm

Did anyone else happen to see Tuesday's review of Eclipse in USA Today's entertainment section? They only gave it two out of four stars. For comparisons sake, the soundtrack to the Hangover sequel got a better rating than Eclipse did. Ouch.

Journey,Eclipse (* * ROCK)

Journey fans who never really cared who the singer was will love Eclipse. The WalMart-exclusive album is a Neal Schon guitar-fest. Those who relished the singalong anthems and romantic ballads may not be so happy. Songs that recall the band's glory days have bridges and solos that pack more punch than the verses and choruses. — Brian Mansfield

Shouldn't be a surprise, the critics have never liked journey. Besides, who gives a rat's ass what the critics think, it's our opinion that matters. After all, it's our money buying the album not theirs. :)

It's also not very accurate. There are 4 and a half songs on Eclipse that may turn off the fans that come to Journey only for ballads, and the rest of the songs should not be too far off the mark for expectations.

I think a reviewer needs some kind of credential to the music he or she is reviewing, before the review can be taken seriously. Does the reviewer know Journey music? Is he or she a fan of the genre, or the band? That matters a lot. If I wrote a review for the Gaga album, for example, it's bound to be terrible, but that's just as much how I feel about that kind of music as I do about her, so my negative review wouldn't mean anything anyway. If this guy only likes Journey for the kind of music he mentioned as absent from this release, I say he's not qualified to review a Journey album because Journey always has been more than just those to the fans.

People expecting new songs for the next season of Glee will be disappointed.

YAY!

Just watch, the same rags that blast them for being too pop will now blast them for being faceless.
The press is no fan of Journey. Never has been. I know that I'm playing the crap out of the album
and really liking it.

I WOULD like the bonus track though... (just sayin'!)

And they gave Twilight 2 stars?? blech!

I think my new favorite song is Chain of love.. What a great song.. This album is like a follow up to Arrival.. Escape,Frontiers,Arrival,Eclipse.. Perfection right there!
I love the fact that Neal's guitar drives the songs again.. That's what Journey is all about.. F the mainstream!

Not sure if that's a compliment or a back hand swipe. When it comes to Tantra though, I echo the theater sentiment to a degree (minus the bit at the end about ingratiating one's self with the Glee crowd).

I wonder if they are referring to Andrew LW ?!?! Phantom of
the Opera, Cats?!? Glee?!?! !! WTH?!? Is this Walmart?!?
Tantra is more Disneyesque, Like Lynny said ...reminds
me of bits and pieces of the entire Lion King soundtrack!!

I agree. One bad review from a large publication can nullify a dozen good ones, especially when the latter come from media columns and blogs so obscure, none of us have ever even heard of them.

OOoo, may hurt radio play too...

Postby MrRockitRide » Thu May 26, 2011 6:27 am

Yeah, yeah, yeah, and Rolling Stone loved Journey. So much for the "kiss of death" from music reviewers....Music reviews from main stream media don't mean much to music fans, particualrly to fans of melodic rock bands. Just like music on the radio or MTV those days are long gone. Popular radio is now the domain of fourteen year old girls and an endless line of Madona tribute bands...Beyonce, Spears, Augluaria, Lady Gag Gag, Jackson, etc, etc... I think the Internet has freed us from the "Next Big Thing" strategy that the big lables used to depend upon.
