Where the hell is Journey?

Postby Don » Thu May 26, 2011 6:20 am

Is Wal-Mart waiting until the last minute to produce it's numbers? The New Kids On The Block/Back Street Boys album is a Wally world exclusive so I'm not sure how their sales are out there but not Journey's?

I would think there should be at least some type of guesstimate mentioned here, as far as Eclipse is concerned.

I don't see Adele's name mentioned here either but that might be because her album isn't a new release.

"She was “Born” to sell downloads. With a massive rollout orchestrated by Interscope’s Steve Berman and manager Troy Carter, Lady Gaga’s Born This Way will debut at #1 next week with the year’s biggest sales total, between 900-950k. That would be the largest debut since Taylor Swift’s Speak Now scored 1.04 million last October.

In a watershed moment for the business, as much as 500k of that total will be digital, thanks in large part to Amazon’s price-busting 99 cent sale on Monday. Estimates are that Gaga’s album broke Coldplay’s previous one-week digital record of 288k on the first day, with an estimated 400k being sold across all digital formats in the first 24 hours. It’s clear the strategy of saturating non-traditional retail worked wonders.

Arista Nashville superstar Brad Paisley’s This Is Country Music, the 10th album since bursting onto the scene in 1999, is on target for an opening week of 145-155k.

Columbia’s Glee Cast Volume 6 will debut with between 80-85k, while Maybach/ Warner Bros.’ Maybach Music Group Presents: Self Made, Vol. 1, the Rick Ross-founded label previously with Def Jam, will do in the 50-55k range.

Columbia/Jive/Legacy’s NKOTBSB, the joining of New Kids and Backstreet Boys, should do 35-40k on the heels of their blockbuster tour.

Finally, Startime Intl./Columbia’s Foster the People, SoCal’s answer to MGMT, debut with Torches, which is in the 25-30k range, fueled by the alternative hit, “Pumped Up Kicks.”

That would still put it above some of the acts mentioned here. Of course, those mentioned have Sony attached to their name also.

If sales don't live up to expectations, I'm blaming the marketing department for not telling people they could get the digital package at Amazon this time around.

You would think so but the membership count on both of the plokker sites and the Journey official site don't even pass that number.

Domestically, not internationally. My prognostication stands. 75,000 units domestically.

I said not over 50,000, because of lack of promotion.

If this doesn't sell 100k on debut I'm going to be disappointed. The whole idea of getting away for a year while DSB was taking over the world is going to look pretty silly if Eclipse doesn't rock the charts. As I said before, the touring isn't an issue, it was just the idea of creating a new identity with the new singer.
Mediocre numbers this time out will really lend creed to the theory that it was the re-worked Greatest Hits that really helped propel Revelation sales, not the new material. Well, that and the already established fact that the feel good story around Arnel was a factor also.

If they follow the same time frame they used for the release of sales figures with Revelation, we should have some info tomorrow.

And then we can see if all this was just me jumping the gun early.

How can they possibly report numbers today or tomorrow when the thing hasn't been on sale for the entire purchase week??? Fuck, it only went on sale yesterday! Walmart will start reporting numbers on Monday and finish up Tuesday. Just like they did with Revelation.

It sounds like Journey is below 30,000 for this weeks sales. Im guessing they didnt get even close to top 5 albums.

I think this is Wal-Mart bleeding it out for a few days. The Manila DVD sold 30k its first week, no way Eclipse is below that.

80k minimum. Really, If Revelation could sell 105,000 when Journey had been out of the scene for years, then this release should be close to that or even more, especially with the Manila Concert's constant presence on Palladia and with the Durbin kid singing DSB on Idol a few weeks ago.

Nobody really cares about Journey, other than a couple dozen of us online...and the money changers.

This album wasn't meant to sell. It's just a NSB project riding on the WM deal coattails of the last Journey record.

Hate to say what we all suspect, but it DOES take classic-Journey popularity to sell. Sopranos, Glee, etc, was all about classic Journey. And that is exactly why WM required the last deal to have the GH attached. It was riding the wave.

The current (AP) lineup doing the DD was Journey's stipulation to including the GH. Because of the REV sales, Journey had the upperhand in landing the second deal. And I really wouldn't be surprised if the initial WM deal didn't include an option on a secondary (current) deal, hingent upon REV sales. NS took advantage on that outcome, and did Eclipse his way. I don't see a third WM record happening, unless Eclipse surprises us all, or there's a 'classic' reunion.

Agree with this. Like it or not, the biggest reason why Revelation had good numbers was the fact that it was a double disc/DVD set that had classic songs on it (although IMHO harshly re-recorded classics) and it was cheap. I don't believe it had anything to do with it being the "new Journey" at all. The album could have been chalked full of masterpieces or chalked full of crap. I would be very, very surprised if Eclipse sold like Revelation sold. There isn't any promotion for it at all and it's a single disc. But, certainly I could be wrong. I guess we'll find out in a few days.

That is just ridiculous. I bet Wal-mart can't stand people saying that. It's just an excuse...if it wasn't 'meant to sell', it would be sold like Red13 - at journeymusic.com and the shows.

Hate to say what we all suspect, but it DOES take classic-Journey popularity to sell.

Arrival and the 2001 DVD did OK without constantly tying everything on nostalgia. The problem is they have gone back and forth on this so many times now that nobody really knows what Journey is doing any longer. With Augeri, they were moving on from Perry. With Soto, they were going in a completely different direction. With Arnel, they were all about emulating the classic sound. Now, still with Arnel, it's really all about guitar and pleasing Neal.

Sopranos, Glee, etc, was all about classic Journey. And that is exactly why WM required the last deal to have the GH attached. It was riding the wave.

I agree with that...and if that is not what Journey wanted, then they should have continued the path they started with Solo. Now they are risking alienating another group of fans. They alienated Perry fans with Augeri, Aigeri fans with Soto, and now everybody with Arnel. Geez.

The current (AP) lineup doing the DD was Journey's stipulation to including the GH. Because of the REV sales, Journey had the upperhand in landing the second deal. I love the way Eclipse not selling much is not a 'surprise'...after it has been released. SJ hyped this album to no end, outselling Revelation, selling over 100,k000 units in release week, blah, blah, blah. Why is it no surprise to me that there is NO songs on the radio, falling off the online charts after ONE DAY...and NO promotion of ANY significance from ANYBODY. Sorry, but this CD is not going to do much at all....and THAT will be the reason why Wal-mart will not release another.

Next Tuesday should give us viewable results on Billboard. That said, if this cd had included the Movie about Arnel with it, we would be seeing much better sales I think. Missed opportunity here.

This is definitely a good point. They don't stay on mission. Hell, they almost even lost me when they said they were going back to the legacy sound. Only when I found out the re-records would also include new music did I remain a fan.

Having said that - Eclipse is outstanding and will sell 250k - 500k overall. Similar to what I think Arrival did (350kish?)

I initially thought the band's position on this chart would be a big measuring stick to how well they would do on Billboard but after seeing Richard Marx nears it top five over the last three weeks and still not having his album sell enough to enter Billboard's top 200, I'm not sure how viable a barometer this is to estimating the album's ultimate debut position on Billboard.

I'm conceding Billboard's #2 position to Paisley.
Dude has been rock solid at number one on Wal-Mart's mp3 album downloads all week and has maintained a continuous presence in Amazon's top 20 over the last 3 days also.
