Sound/mix problems still an issue?

Third show in UK and beginning of a consecutive three night run..

http://rushonrock.com/2011/06/08/review ... gner-styx/

Newcastle Metro Radio Arena, June 7 2011

A poor mix coupled with an out-of-sync rhythm section scuppered Journey’s plans to make an immediate impact and Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) was barely representative of a band boasting class and experience in abundance.

Out of sync rythym section? Deen keeps a pretty lean time....Valory can at least follw(he sucks by the way)....

My guess is too much ahem, recorded, errr, canned shit coming out at the wrong time. These fuckers only play 13 songs every show, SW being one of them. This is INEXCUSABLE to say the least. I bet you my sons left eye, Schon was shaking his head on stage, pissed at somebody else. Bank on that!

Neal runs a tight ship onstage from what I can gather. They messed up a song in Baltimore a few years ago, and he was HOT!

I know this discussion has occured before on here, but I hate how Schon always motions and looks over to his techie on the side of the stage with a glare. Seems to happen more often than not. I'd hate to be that guy!

Yeah, and it is NEVER Schon's fault. ALWAYS someone else fucked up, never him.

The story I got from a client of mine that was at an industry party, or some gathering in nashville with Cain's keyboard tech and the sound guy Journey originally hired, and was on the south america tour.

They hired this guy on recommendation from Allan Parsons, and Journey flew the guy who mixed the album out to california, and put the the two of them together for a few days and they dialed the whole show and system in during rehearsals, and fine tuned it in the nevada shows, to take to South America.

Apparently this guy had it all working from that, and I guess they were sounding good in South America.

For what ever reason, the band fired this guy / hired a new guy for europe and beyond, that had to start from zero, without all the stuff / knowledge, and sounds that the 1st guy, and the guy that mixed the album came up with, and it looks like it's making bad press. I really wish I knew more of the story then that, I don't know why they didn't keep the guy after south america. maybe personal differences? my "Source" doesn't really know much more, he was a fly on the wall, just picking up part of a conversation.

How do they fix this while on the road and out of country? This can potentially fuck them up in Europe for future tours.
I'll bet they are pissed! Who knows why people like that get fired....maybe he and Neal butted heads or the guy showed
up drunk or had an ego bigger than Steve Perry's.

Yeah the sound was shit last night and it certainly seemed like there was a delay from Dean hitting the drums to us hearing it which was off putting but I thought it was just me...

You could tell the guy didn't know the sings. As I said in a previous thread he didn't know when to raise arnels mic.

Wow. I couldn't figure it out, all the sound issues in the UK, because the clips were good from South America soundwise of the band. So I guess that answers it, a different sound guy.

PS If they fired Kalmusky they're stupid. That guy seemed to really know his shit and did an excellent job on the album. And the South American gigs sounded great I thought. Management sets up zero promotion for the CD, the band members aren't versed on when the CD is getting released on iTunes, Walmart does zero promotion, the audio samples on the eve of the release are terrible, Anderson doesn't stock the CD under "New Releases" ... and they fire ... the sound guy. Makes perfect sense to me.

I wonder if they replaced Deen and Mother/Father with Arnel and Tantra because Deen is having vocal problems, cold/flu, who knows. I really see no other reason to change the setlist like that so quickly unless he was having problems.

LOL I just clicked on that link. Appropriate. I think they fired the sound guy that they had hired to work with Kalmusky (who mixed the album) on setting up the sound just right before they left for the SA tour is the way I read it and then fired that guy before UK. Maybe I'm wrong.

When I saw Journey a couple of years ago in NC, they were touring with Night Ranger. Night Ranger sounded amazing! Everything was mixed just right and the concert was enjoyable. When Journey got on stage, the mix was all screwed up apparently. The vocals were too quiet, too much reverb, too much echo....first concert I had ever gotten up and left early from.

Incidentally, I saw Journey at the same venue ten years earlier, and they sounded amazing. So, I know it can't be the venue.

When I saw them, the opposite. Night Ranger's vocals were noticeably down in the mix, not out front, so I was worried about Journey's sound, but Journey sounded amazing.

I saw them both at the NYS Fair after the Arrival tour. Ranger was REALLY loud. Maybe the loudest I've ever heard. Both had sound issues because, well, it was the NYS State Fair.

If that was the case then I think they would have just thrown in Whos Crying Now instead.

At Birmingham on sunday evening, Deens vocals were a little off for me, maybe it was a cold etc, Mother Father sounded great but unfortunately this time Deen didn`t!

ditto! I was there and it sounded horrible! I was in front row in front of schon! Saw them 2 years prior at verizon wireless in charlotte front row and was incredible. Hope they fix this mess before charlotte this year!

Amen. I'm going to that show as well if they get the sound fixed. If not, I will save my money. I would be truly disappointed to hear Journey sound like crap live. Not supposed to happen. :?

Well the show from two years ago had the sound man that was replaced initially [or Kevin E] . I have no idea who is mixing anymore but this sort of sound stuff is troublesome.

Whatever happened to Elson? Sleazy fucker to be sure, but IMO, he was a good sound guy. Not being sarcastic regarding Tapegate (which he was actually clever as fuck....he turned a shitty singer into a Perry clone- and can you imagine the difficulty of feeding in the tape at the right time?) Anyway, get him back. I also wonder if he too had a falling out with the band, and if so, what's stopping him from telling the Tapegate story to a major rag? ---unless he doesn't want to be associated with the scam. He and I got into it during the show at Pompano Beach...THAT was interesting to say the least.

TIA

No the Kalmusky guy is mixing 2 Schon records, and part of Cain's new studio in Nashville according to his website and facebook, I think he's pretty in with the Journey guys for a while. I'd heard they fired the sound guy that was on the road in South America with them, (Who was doing great, and had worked WITH Kalmunsky in rehearsals) now they SHOULD just hire Kalmusky to go mix the band on tour, that sounds like it would make the most sense.

Thanks for the clarification. I agree 100% with your entire post. Hire David, if he's willing, to hit the road in the U.S. Otherwise, you might be seeing a domestic disaster in the making.

doing live sound is quite different than engineering/mixing in the studio... so much so that most do one or the other...

ALso.. Kalmusky is a pretty in demand fella in Nashville... and I'm sure he's committed well into the near future...

Not sure the front row is a very good place from which to judge how the sound is mixed. The mixed sound is going right over your head.

Brings up an interesting point. Where in an arena IS the best place to HEAR the concert? I assume each arena is different to some degree. Location does make a big difference.

Well I cant speak about the sound, but judging from watching some concert footage from Wembley, it finally looks like Journey has a pretty cool stage design and lighting. It looks like a stage design of a headliner. Finally they spent some money on decent stage and lighting.

Now they need to fix that sound problem.
