Was the Newcastle Metro concert played in lower key?

I heard this and it sounds lower, but maybe it's just the YouTube?

I don't think so. I just think they are having a lot of issues sound wise with all of the new songs in general. They have really been going nuts on the reverb. People were said to be bailing before they even got to the encore.

And lets be honest, Arnel just doesn't have the gift of improvising on the fly that is sorely needed in place of the banshee wails going on at the end of some of these songs.

I thought they had hired one of the best sound engineers around, who was going on the road with them.
Maybe this is just a tough catalog to make sound good live.

I asked the mix guy in a thread back before the tour started and he said they should be able to pull it off live with the equipment they were bringing along this time.

We need Matt or somebody with an eagle ear to chime in but to me it's not stepped down. Just other issues going on.

And that might just be the problem. They have to keep triggering canned stuff and make it blend and it doesn't sound like it's doing that very well.
Maybe it just takes time to tweak and they'll eventually get it right, but having it cause people to leave early is not gonna work for very long.

Journey - the crew that couldn't boot straight.

Yeah that is definitely down tuned. Really? Already??? A new CD out and you won't even be able to hear them play the songs in the original key. Nice.

Yeah, but if SP were still at the helm they'd probably have to tune down into "bull frog mode".

For somebody who wants to talk about the new stuff you seem to bring SP up more than anyone!

You can't have a Journey conversation without SP. It's never gonna happen.

Agreed :) But if SP were indeed still the lead singer then you wouldn't have to worry about down tuning because there wouldn't even be a new CD or tour

They should not be down tuning new songs. Maybe on the back end of the tour in 2012 but not right now.

Someone mentioned to AP in the shoutbox that they didn't care for Kelly because he was singing in a lower key. AP defended Hanson but he didn't mention that Journey would be doing the same this tour. In 2009, he mentioned it right off the bat.
I'm still not sure that is what is going on here.

If they down tune any songs they have to down tune everything, as I understand it. There is no shift on the fly provision for this. Of course
since Cain is not using a traditional piano, it might be possible. Neal has lots of guitars.

Maybe if we heard more songs from that concert (like one of the DD) we would know for sure.

Yep, sounds like they went down a whole step...
Maybe they were trying to give the song an even darker vibe :-)

"foreigner were brilliant but the sound quality of journey was shocking. in over 40 years of live bands this was the first time i left before the end."
Again just awful, woeful sound mix at the Birmingham gig. I hope it got sorted for the other dates. Next time you come around guys , please bring a less deaf sound engineer with you, so we can ALL enjoy a superb sound to go with the great songs."

Detuning isn't going to fix this stuff.

They need to address this very soon or they're gonna start losing return customers.

No complaints about the singing or anything, just the same theme over and over again. Not the venues either because Styx and Foreigner are getting good reviews, Foreigner most of all.

Journey better watch it or Foreigner will be headlining the UK shows next year.

Yeah, they're tuned down. Also, in the choruses, the backup harmonies are overmixed so you're hearing them over Arnel's voice which is the higher harmony. Arnel looks a bit tired in the clip too.
I suppose it could be youtube or the way the video was rendered, but I doubt it. If that's what it takes to get singers through a tour, I could care less. Had they done that with SP, he might still be in the band. Wonder if that was ever discussed.

It could be worse, they could be using all sorts of crappy effects or tracks. His voice still sounds good in the clip. I don't hear any scratchiness. He does sound winded though. He's definitely not loud enough in the mix. The choruses have Cain's voice louder than anyones.

MORE IMPORTANTLY:
I also notice that Arnel might be reaching for his monitor volume on his backside too.
With all the reports of bad sound, if that's also happening with the monitors, it's going to bake any singer quick. With crap monitors, it doubles your job and that would explain why they're already tuning down a bit.

With Styx- they're on the road practically 365 days a year. There are also 2 lead singers there. 3 if you count what JY does as lead singing.

They have a show tonight and tomorrow night also, I guess they are trying to help him out then.

Is Styx the only band not detuning then?

Just asking because there is debate between them and Foreigner being the better sounding acts last night.

Styx is definitely not de-tuning

Damn. Definitely downtuned. Sounds like monkey shit. Hopefully it was because Arnel had a cold or something.

So now, Journey thinks they're Coldplay. Detuning right out of the gate on a new release

No Kidding, I posted on the "Sound Mix problems still an issue" thread

http://forums.melodicrock.com:/phpBB/vi ... hp?t=51682

They fired the big shot sound guy they had for rehearsals and South America, and it sounds like who ever they got, is really making a huge mess of it. The band needs to know they are getting this much bad attention on their sound, and people are leaving, it's in the press, on the boards, but I'll bet the band is oblivious to it from night to night, someone who can... should let them know.

Yep it's down a half step and sounds like crap, no surprise. If they're down half a step in the US I'll have two VIP fourth row, dead center tickets for sale for Noblesville, IN. Dickheads ...
