JSS and Eclipse

Postby RSParker » Tue Jun 14, 2011 4:49 am

What would this album been like with the mighty JSS at the mic? I'm not hating Arnel.

I hear him eating this record for lunch and crapping out golden bricks.

Again, no hate here, just a thought.

I honestly think this album would be even better with JSS as the lead singer. Not that Arnel does a poor job, I think he sounds great, but I think the songs sound nearly perfect for JSS' type of voice.

I think Jeff would have sounded great on this album, but you probably wouldn't have had songs like City of Hope or Tantra on the disc. Which would have been great! :D

She's a Mystery sounds like a song for Tommy Shaw.

I think this record would have been the masterpiece it was intended to be with Jeff on board.

I disagree. I would love to have had an album with JSS at the lead vocal spot, but not this one.

This album was definitely written for Arnels voice.

Well, these are definitely Soto-esque (relatively speaking) sale numbers.

Because people don't realize that this guy is one of the hardest working, talented vocalists we have. Revelation was a solid Journey record, but it sold on novelty. The novelty is gone. Eclipse is good for 5 songs but i think with JSS on it, the feel would have been different. Again, I am not hating on Arnel but it just doesn't jive to me, I felt let down.

Jeff? Where yu at?

Nice try to the op.
The biggest complaints that I see regarding this cd is either the song writing or it's too Neal driven. Not much complaining about APs voice.
AP is the better Journey singer, so the thread implies JSS should have just been brought in for the album? They sure aren't gonna
tour with him.

I think they shoul have called it the Neal Schon Project and let Jeff sing.

Based on Soto's lyrical contributions to the W.E.T. album, I'd say his presence would be inconsequential to the track list of Eclipse.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

You would totally have blamed Soto for Eclipse sales , if he was in the band , wouldnt ya ? ;)

Most people (here) say the lack of promotion is what killed Eclipse when it comes to sales. Here is the real truth about why Eclipse didnt sell as many copies as Revelation . Most of those (non-fans) who bought Revelation, picked up the CD at walmart, look on the back, seen a dozen of songs that they recognized, and threw it in their shopping cart and figured "for $10 , what the heck" .
With Eclipse its different cause 9 out of 10 (non-fans) who picked up the CD , put it back on the shelf, cause they didnt recognize any of the songs. Promotion of a song or two , maybe wouldve helped to sell another 4-5000 copies, but not even close to what Revelation sold.

In the debate over JSS vs. Arnel for singing Eclipse material, my answer is Dean Castronovo.

I wouldn't jump on this one so fast bro. I believe JSS will have a much bigger year than the boys in Journey. Just wait for it, you'll see.

You lose all credibility when you can't even spell the guys name correctly. It's Deen, not Dean.

Secondly, BOTH Pineda and Soto are much better singers than Deen. If you don't believe me, ask Deen himself.

I see, so in the world of "Rockindeano" submitting a typo reduces one's opinion to a credibility of zero. Thanks for clarifying, Deano. Glad you're here to police these things. I mean what's next, cats and dogs living together? Total chaos!

Secondly, DEEN (happy now?), makes these kinds of statements from a position of diplomacy (which is why everyone who's filled the lead singer position during his tenure as drummer is "his brother"), but also, IMO, from a great measure of personal insecurity. Most decent folk would place themselves second to another's talents so they don't come off as conceited or egotistic. Present company excluded of course.

That said, sure, from a technical perspective, I think Arnel has a stronger instrument than Deen. But Deen wins in the character department and that's what Arnel sorely lacks on new music. Granted, I should have submitted that point in my original post, but it's covered in my review of Eclipse elsewhere on this board.

Countdown to being called "cum breath" or some other highbrow comment in 4.... 3.... 2....

Everyone's an expert!

You guys honestly think the J-boyz haven't thought about this shit already? Neal and Jon has spent over 50-60 years in the music business combined. It's simply not as easy as; "Promote it! TV commercials! Letterman! Change vocalist! Get back Perry!"

It's not a market for rock, especially Journey's kind; they're well past their prime as well. Still they bother making a decent rocking record and continue to tour. If it wasn't for Jon and Neal (guessing mostly the latter), then Journey would've ended after TBF, which means no Arrival, no tours, no nothing.

It is what it is. Shut the fuck up already.

Can't argue with that -- EXCEPT -- I didn't say it would sell better. My only comment is on what I personally thought of the music and if it would be something I would continually listen to, not how it would or wouldn't sell.

JSS is sexxy as hell and rocks the stage like a man, women love him!

Arnel, sorry....he does nothing for the typical American women to be honest. He has a great voice and I know he's sweet and a great guy...
but I think this album would have been way better with someone else.
