First time you heard 'em

So, the first time I heard Journey was when my neighbor's dad was giving us a ride to school one morning. He had their first album 'Journey' recorded to an 8-track and we listened to Of a Lifetime and Mystery Mountain on the way to school. I think it 'clicked' after MM to loop back to OAL. Dang, hard to believe it was over 30 years ago that I started listening to this band

When was the first time you were introduced? Memorable moment?

The first I remember hearing them was in a friend of my sister's car and "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" was playing, so I guess that would've been 1983.

Growing up in the Bay Area you couldn't miss them. They were on the radio everywhere, even the pre-Perry music. I can remember my older brother listening to Of A Liftime, Spaceman, etc. So, for me, it must have been around 76-77 at a ripe age of 7 or 8.

I had a cousin in the Pagans and I remember someone playing Infinity at one of their barbeques. That must have been 1979.

I work for my brother and in the Silk-Screening business at the moment and he ALWAYS had the Greatest Hits playing. Everyday, it would be playing and I took an insane liking to it. Knew most of the songs on the CD but was one of those moments to where "Wow, Journey sings this one?" So one night, I was in Wal-Mart and decided on my own to go and pick up the Greatest Hits and the rest is history.

Pretty much my story except I was in the car with my mom.

Golden Gate Rhythm Section. I think I heard a song on the radio, although I believe they were named Journey by the time they released their self titled album.

I was in the 9th grade at a Bay Area high school and school had just gotten over. I came around the corner of a building heading toward the parking lot and BAM! I got hit with music I'd never heard before blaring from a Camaro. The closer I got the better I could hear it but I couldn't place who it was. When I got to the guy's car, I asked the guy who it was and his exact words were,
"They're a local group called Journey. It's basically a couple guys that used to be in Santana and some guy from the Central Valley on vocals. They're pretty good huh?"
He was playing the Infinity cassette. I bought the LP the same day. They jumped to the top of the list of my favorite bands in a very short time and have been there ever since.

Classic Rock's Main Event tour in 2003. I went for Styx and didn't know who Journey was but decided to stick around for them. I was also exposed to REO Speedwagon for the first time at this concert

It was my senior year in high school. I went into a Peaches record store and an employee had put the whole album on to play over the sound system. After 3 songs had played while I was looking through the racks for something else, I went up to the counter and asked what band they were playing and I purchased Infinity and forgot all about whatever it was I initially went to the store to get.

Peaches... Wow! I forgot all about them. I remember everyone had those peach crate album boxes. Every once in a while I'll see one (garage sale, working at a client's home, etc.) and it brings back so many memories.

The crates were so cool! Everyone I knew had them. I had 4 album crates and 6 of the smaller cassette crates. I liked the graphic on the end. Haven't seen one in years. Loved to go to that record store and browse. Brings back many memories for me too...good times and good music!

And they were seemingly indestructible too! You could use them as jack stands and they probably wouldn't break! When I moved out of my parents' house after high school and got my first apartment, I used one as a nightstand - just flipped it on its end, draped it with a bandana bearing the obligatory pot leaf, peace sign or paisley print, set a candle on it and voila.... furniture. If you had two of them, you damn near had a bedroom set!
If memory serves, Frank Martinez has about 40-50 of them which still contain his vast record collection.

   Oh my gosh! I did the same thing except I draped one with a Stevie Nicks type shawl with fringe. You are right, they were strong. I had friends who made bookshelves with them...one on either end, a board across the top and stacked a couple more, another board, etc. Dang good times. I wish I still had my car I drove to Peaches that day. 1970 Chevy Malibu in mint condition. Bought it off the original owner who had kept it garaged and drove it very little. Lots of chrome..mag wheels....all the guys at school wanted my car.

Holy Shit! I have almost the same story! The old lady that lived across the street from my parents died and her kids came to get all her stuff, settle her estate, etc. When I got home from school this one particular day, there was a 1970 blue Chev Malibu sitting in the driveway with a "For Sale" sign on it. It had been in her garage for years, never seeing the light of day. She and her husband who died years before she did, bought it new. This was my senior year of high school, 1981 and in the 11 years they owned it they amassed a whopping 50k miles. Other than the tires which were rotting off of it, the car was PERFECT in every way. The best part...? the "For Sale" sign listed the asking price of...... $500.00! I literally almost soiled myself, cried, and had a mini-stroke at the same time. 15 mins. earlier, I didn't know the car even existed but this discovery was potentially life changing and the only thing standing between me and the car was... well... I didn't have any money. Looking back now, I must have delivered the most convincing, important and mature speech in my young life up to that point because that night I was the owner. My parents also kicked in for tires and rims (Dunlop GT Qualifiers and American Racing 5-star rims, chrome of course, and I was fuckin' STYLIN!! That was in '81 so I believe the correct terms for what described me were, Rad, Solid, Bad!, Trippindicular, and the big daddy of them all... Bitchin! (Thank you Moon Unit Zappa for your contribution to the tapestry that is American pop culture! 8) )

I had it for about 3 years before I blew up the engine racing it on Friday nights. It had a 350 and was completely stock and was still fast as Hell! God, I loved that car. Good times!

Great story! and funny!  Hey, I had those same rims on mine, I think.. they were 5 star chrome, anyway! My Malibu was forest green with a black top and got it for $700! which was an awesome buy since mine was only 8 years old at the time. I have to admit, I had a lead foot too back then and couldn't resist when someone pulled up and revved at a stop light. I watched the light like a racing tree and put the pedal to the metal! Mine was stock too, but fast! Yep, that model car was definitely rad....and made us drivers bad for sure!

Apparently your time in the hospital took its toll on your memory recall. That's okay, you'll probably be able to hide your own Easter eggs pretty soon which could be fun.

My first time hearing them and knew them as Journey that I could remember was Only the Young when that came on the radio. It was only after that, that when I heard DSB and OA I recognized them as Journey.

First time I remember hearing and loving Journey was when I was 7/8 in 1997. And my Dad had Trial by Fire playing in the car. I loved that album and always said "play the cat CD!"

He also played me Escape but I wasnt into it at the time.

older sisters listened to disco and soft rock in the late 70's so in 1981 when my dad took us on a cross country road trip,
DSB was heard a lot on the radio. Fell in love with the song, got Escape, then Inifinity, Evolution, Departure, Captured. a Much differnet sound but liked just as much
Even got First record, which I only half liked. Sep Ways and Frontiers only solidfied my love for em. What a monster of a CD.
Got DaD sometime after, the 20+$ import, wow, was i initailly bummed, but have grown to appreciate most of it.
(as with ROR).
Have bought every Journey/Perry, BE ,some shon and cain stuff since, the storm as well.
Up to Arrival.
