Tension Between Band Members Already...?

Not really, but something Deen did at the Newcastle show might be mistook as Deen displaying a little bit of attitude.

At :08 into MF,, immediately before Deen is to utter the first word of the song, he puts both of his sticks in his right hand and appears to flip off Neal with his left. I'm fairly sure that's not the case and rather is gesturing to the stage left sound engineer that his in-ear monitors sounded better as a result of whatever he did (Hey, I'm trying to stay positive here... )
HOWEVER, to those who don't know Deen like we do, they will see what I just described and DEFINITELY think he's flipping Neal off!

It looked to me like he held up three fingers for some reason.

He points to his in-ear monitors and then gives the "ok" sign or gestures to turn it up. That would be my guess. Regardless, I don't think he flipped anyone off.

Again, I think it was the the three fingers that result when you make the "ok" sign.

Deen is not that unprofessional.

Obnoxious fan? Sure. Bandmates in the middle of a gig? No way.

Agreed Dan. Upon further review, he's clearly not flipping the bird and looks to be communicating with one of the sound guys. It was just kind a WTF moment the first (second, third...) time I watched it. LOL! And if he actually was flipping Neal off, I'm pretty sure he'd have it coming!

With all the sound issues, I'm sure Deen was communicating about his ear monitor. 3 clicks up or down on the volume maybe?

I hope everyone realizes I was joking about Deen flipping someone off. I thought I clarified that in my original post but if not, let me say it again... It was funny because at first glance it LOOKS LIKE Deen is flipping the bird. And like DrFu stated, Deen is way too professional of a guy to do something like that - especially to someone who has had a personal hand in making him a very rich man!

That said, it is kinda funny at first glance.

This wouldn't be the first time I've seen one of the guys gesturing off stage at some unseen person. I remember at the Lake Tahoe Generations show they did where Augeri was gesturing at someone where he was spreading his arms up and down as if to say "open it up" or turn up his sound. I remember his sound mix being a little bit soft or something to start off with and it improved a bit as the show went on

Without exaggeration, I can't remember a show where Neal wasn't having an issue with .... something.... whatever it happens to be that day. He starts out sorta subtle with just a couple of up-nods to his tech to which the tech, not having a clue what the up-nods mean that day, starts mouthing random guitar-related words, begging the Gods to let him guess what Neal's unhappy with in the first few seconds because he knows if that doesn't happen, Neal will begin the untranslatable gesture show getting angrier by the second that the guy he pays to be his personal ape isn't receiving the telepathic info Neal, in his mind, is sending as clear as day.

You'd think that with the frequency Neal has an issue with some part of his rig and as many techs as he's had that he would have come up with a clear and concise gesture mini-database that his tech will be able to act immediately and soothe Neal until the next thing happens.

I swear there have been times when the gesture show gets to the point that it reminds me of the classic Lassie episode where Lassie is barking and Timmy's dad is trying to understand Lassie by randomly spouting out phrases like, "What is it girl? Did Timmy fall down the well...??"

None of the frustration Neal has allowed himself to display on stage when he's having an issue even comes close to the Vegas show when they shot the DVD a couple of years back when right at the beginning of SHML Neal's sound ceased to exist. Nothing. Nada. Zip! I'm pretty sure every roadie, tech, engineer, driver and towel boy shit themself just a little at that moment. And although he was visibly LIVID with the situation, he knew that whatever happened wasn't the fault of his tech so he stayed cool in that regard.

A good example of the Neal's gesture show is during Higher Place on the 2001 DVD. Neal is a perfectionist when it comes to his sound and rightly so. So when he's hearing something that shouldn't be there or vice verse, he notifies someone so they can fix it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing him at all. Just sharing what most of us have witnessed over the years.

Deen probably communicates with his tech the most of everyone but then again he sits right behind Deen and since Deen kicks, hits, beats and all but tries to destroy his instrument, it's easy to understand his need for his tech to be within reach when Deen needs something.

You can see Jonathan Cain doing it in the background when the camera is focused on Arnel during After All These Years on the Manila DVD. Looks like he's trying to ask for some sort of volume adjustment...but he appears to be looking at Deen Castronovo. The plot thickens...
