So, Journey has tons of live audio and video in their archives. I know it's not as simple a decision as, "Hey, let's throw some of that stuff up on the web, so people can buy it," but it would seem like the band would be working on making this stuff available. I know it might be vanity that would keep them from putting up anything but edited material, but I can't imagine that archival material would be lucrative for all parties with a financial stake in the live material. The sales of the Live in Houston DVD shows that there is an interest in this stuff. There's a lot of subpar bootleg material floating around that makes them sound far worse than any soundboard recording.

Does Perry own them, cause if he does they will never see the light of day. I don't get anything this band does or doesn't do...

I really don't think Neal and Jon are interested anyway. Schon wants to promote the new stuff during this two year concert run. That's why there won't be any gigs that are centered specifically around Escape, even with the album's 30th anniversary looming.

Just having the Greatest Hits back in the Top 20 while Eclipse bombs has to be grating on him (if he's even aware).
Don't expect to see anything come out the Sony vaults until the band is ready to hang it up.

Jon is probably focused on his new recording studio he is building in Nashville and his daughter's career. Neal is still that 15 year old and will tour until he cant hold a guitar anymore or until they shred Arnel's pipes and he can't sing anymore..

I would love to hear some of the old stuff that isn't a bootleg and sounds decent. Guess I won't be hearing it in my lifetime.. LOL!

Perry won't even release some of the 50 songs he supposedly has in his stash.

I know it's fun to paint Perry as the bad guy here but really, why would Journey 2.0 want to promote the older material when A.) It's selling fine on its own and B.) They're touring a new album that is already underperforming and doesn't need anymore competition as it is?
And most of that stuff is held by Columbia. Journey made their break from those guys a while back, remember?

Perry controls his image... and to a large degree that control has shaped their legend and legacy...

I'd love to hear stuff from the vault.. I was told once there was a warehouse full of it...

It just amazes me how much control Perry still has. Don't get me wrong I love Perry. And that is the Journey I prefer to this day. Just my personal preference.

I have Eclipse and have been listening to it. Trying to like it, but sorry just can't say I do. I applaud their effort though. Out of the box for Journey. But I even prefer Neal's solo work to Eclipse. I prefer when he is playing something soulful like Big Moon or Send me an Angel.

I have several boot and band recorded boots that I wish would get the remaster job that Perry did with the Houston show. There are a few really good ones from the Captured era that should be released, even if it is not one single concert but several.

As for the Perry having a say so, the answer is YES, he has to give permission to release anything with his image on it, this is the reason why Ross won't make his home movies on the road go. Ross once stated that the star of his home movies about the band was Perry who had a large sense of humor in the early days, before S.S. came in the picture.

Perry's solo tour for LOSM was not recorded by any professional as far as I know, I also have boots from four shows and they are all pretty much the same quality (below today's standards) and set list.

I wish that they would release some of the song material that is sitting in the vault that has yet to see the light of day. For example there is With A Tear that was on the Time3 box set that actually has vocals to it, sure it is not up to the standards and is basically a vocal demo for the song but it is worth it. Yeah, it's really frustrating that when they re-released the catalog again, they didn't make Infinity a double CD with a live bonus CD. There are some great shows from that era, and Perry sounded fantastic. Plus, you still have some of the Rolie fronted material. Perry and Rolie sounded great together, especially on "Next." There are also a lot of demos, commericals, etc. that are really fun to hear as boots but would be even better as officially mixed and mastered releases.

They can't do anything (in a financial sense) with back cataloue/Perry material without his approval. But they could do live downloads of concerts without any need to confur with SP. Publishing dues is all that would be needed to be paid.

Why ROR when Perry was quite obviously 'off his head' and vocally, well, 'SHOT'. Anybody who thinks differently are fooling themselves. The recordings do not lie.

There were pro recordings made from the Japanese leg of the 'Frontiers' tour (apart from the common Tokyo show), and if you have heard the audio from those, well lets just say that they are in the same league as Houston 81. Would far rather have them than a ROR show.

There are NO professionally recorded shows from FTLOSM tour. He had zero of those shows recorded. The best you are gonna get is the 'upgraded' version of the Beacon, NY show. The upgrade is way better than the ones that are 'out there'. Audio wise, the Atlanta show is almost soundboard quality A+.

I firmly believe that a lot of this stuff WILL gradually become available (leaked). There is already some evidence of this beginning to happen to a certain extent with pro shots etc.

I agree completely, it was MAGIC.

I can understand ROR. There are a lot of fans who loved ROR. Their favorite ERA. I guess of matter of taste. I would take any ERA at this point.


I am still learning about my favorite singer and band, and appreciate the conversations in this thread. Thanks to.all for your input. I have been on some of the Perry boards and have never learned nearly as much as I have here. I realize that alot is speculation. No one truly knows what went down with the band but the band and the inner circle. But thanks for walking me through some of their history and listening to my opinion on matters..

If they do release a DVD of the ROR era, they need to use one of the early shows in the tour. Perry was doing OK at the beginning of that tour. Sae them at the Mountain Aire Festival, from which the Girl Can't Help It video was produced. This was a good show and Perry sounded real good. Saw them at the Cow Palace in SF later in the tour, and though still sounding good, Perry's vocals were a bit spotty on some tunes.

While Journey is still active and a money-making machine, why release the stuff now? My guess is that they wait until they are retired and then release it. They'd be making money again just by sitting at home (ala Perry-style ).

Either that or there will eventually be stuff trickling out year after year after evenyone is dead and someone new has control.

Just look at all the live material that's been released of Jimi Hendrix. There is a lot of live footage out there of him and he was only active for 4 years! (1966-1970)

I thought I read somewhere that there exists a pro shot full concert of the ROR tour that is in the vault. I would love to see an official release of the Captured Tour as well as Frontiers and ROR - combo the DVD with an audio CD and you have a winner.

Even if Perry okays something, Neal, Jon and whoever else has to do the same. If Journey 2.0 doesn't want their current identity competing against the past lineups, they can put the brakes on it also.

When I wrote this post, I have to admit I was thinking of the Dream Theater model. They have specialty releases target at their fanbase on their own label, Ytsejam Records. I know that there are legalities involved that probably make having a boutique label like this not doable for Journey, but it is so cool to have access to that Dream Theater stuff. It's frustrating as a fan to know that there is some great stuff in the Journey vaults that may never see the light of day.

there are full shows in the vault for departure/captured, frontiers, and the whole mountain aire show from ror

theres atleast 5 very good hsas songs that didnt make the lp, i wish neal or sammy would put them up for download, they probably feel it will just be traded once its up, and is a waste of time
