My Eclipse Side A

Postby yandtguy » Tue Jul 12, 2011 10:54 am

So, I re-arranged the songs on Eclipse, and this is my new "Side A" for the album:

City Of Hope
Anything Is Possible
She's A Mystery
Human Feel
Someone

Back in the day, that would be a kick arse album side. Here's my "Side B"

Resonate
Edge Of The Moment
Chain Of Love
Ritual
Venus

I have been listening to that "A Side" mix in the car, and I'm really liking Eclipse more and more. "She's A Mystery" is becoming one of my favorite Journey tracks of all time. Unfortunately, like Frontiers Side B, the second 5 tracks will probably not fare near as well. Maybe "Resonate," but the rest are fading from interest, and "Tantra" and "To Whom It May Concern" are already done for.

Two of the worse songs not on either side of the album? Bravo, indeed.

You're a fag - 5 pussy songs on side A. Side B is probably the 4 best songs on the album, I would drop Venus. The album is average at best, but had they release an EP of the 5 best song (add AIP by default) it wouldn't be bad.

I simply don't get that, it's a cool track. And GCHI was fine for ROR...fit the vibe of the disc perfectly.

Schon said he struggled with the track listing on Eclipse, and that the-powers-that-be wanted more of the poppy traditional stuff upfront. Instead, he front loaded it with more of the dark stuff (EOTM, COL). I'm pretty happy with hit. I don't hit 'skip' at all.

Sorry, but the harder songs aren't as strong as the melodic ones. I had the same problem with Trial By Fire. I wanted to like the harder songs on that album, but they were weak. "Message Of Love" (or "Separate Ways Part 2") and "One More" were the only decent rock songs. I see "City Of Hope" as the track that encapsulates the theme of the album, so it makes since to have it first. Journey has been using an anthem type of track to lead the albums off with for awhile now, and COH isn't bad. The chorus just needed a little more work.

The reason I would rearrange the tracklist is because it worked for Frontiers. You front load the thing with the melodic numbers for the casual fans, and you give the more hardcore fans deeper tracks at the back end of the album. It just makes sense.

I agree, "Girl Can't Help It" was probably the best track on the disc. It really toed the line between the band's heritage sound and the new sound they explored on the album. I think people forget that "Don't Stop Believing" kicks off Escape, and I think they were going for the same vibe on ROR.

Thanks. I was afraid I would get some juvenile response to my post. I do agree about "Venus," but I wanted a round 10. 9 songs at the length of the Eclipse songs would have been an LP back in the 80's, though, so I could go with that.

I would actually re-arrange the album something like this personally

City of Hope
Edge of the Moment
Tantra
Chain of Love
Shes a Mystery

Resonate
Anything is Possible
Human Feel
Ritual
To Whom it May Concern consolidated with Venus as an outro
Someone

I'm still playing around with the arrangements thought its just feels right to me that Tantra just flows into Chain of Love where that intro to COL feels like it could be an interlude between Tanta and itself. Resonate's outro with the way the guitar fades out seems to ease into the intro sound of Anything is Possible. This arrangement seems to flow a little bit better if simulating an side a/side b setup with a reasonable closer (which Someone seems to work where its at on my list)

Probably not the best list, but I'm still playing with it...

Agree that COL is the best track on the disc. The only thing that I don't like about it (hate actually), is the whole "Chain, Chain, Chain of Love.." part. Drives me batty. Otherwise, it's top notch.

From a strictly musical standpoint, Chain of Love is probably the strongest song on Eclipse in my opinion with Resonate coming in at a close second.

I love 'Chain of Love', but 'Resonate' kicks its ass. 8) :D

I will agree....but it's a hard sell for a Journey fan. Just sayin.

Oh and Tantra makes me want to puke....It sounds like Meatloaf on Disney.

Well, it can hardly be expected to approach the magic of 'I Stand Alone' now can it?

Easy, now. "Quest..." was a Warner Bros.' movie that flopped at the box office and received horrible critical reviews. Perry ain't no Elton John or Phil Collins.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news...
Wiki says that the album peaked at #117 on the Billboard 200 and its awards and accolades didn't extend to Perry's contributions... looks like Eclipse knocked even this one out. So much for your win, eh?
