The Today show comes on at 7 am CDT in the Midwest. I would suspect it would air around the same time in most areas of the US. Have no clue when Journey will actually perform.

today show format...hype the plaza performance for the first 90 munites... show the crowd and talk about how large the crowd is... with all the signs during and when they come back from commercial breaks... which are a lot and often... about 830A CDT after news and weather... they will have time for maybe 2 songs then... then the 900A hour arrives... maybe one more tune... who knows maybe 10A hour Kathie lee and Hoda will invite the boys in for some wine... LOL..
I have it ready for DVR...

Great job. Arnel sounded great. They mixed up Jon with Neal at first when asking them questions. LOL
I actually even enjoyed City of Hope, which isn't my favorite song. But live it sounded catchy.

I have the show taping at home... what else has been played... at 725A it was cool to see journey jamming already otuside on the plaza... I couldnt tell, big crowd or medium size... the 5 minutes I was able to watch before going to work... lots of journey signs... cool...

I hope someone puts the performance on YouTube. The rain is messing with my satellite signal.

Not bad, though I'm not stunned. Might have to listen to it a few more times.

Something goofy at the beginning of City of Hope- Neal was playing and a lower guitar part started out of key (half step below I believe). Jon was on keys... so maybe a roady was playing with them doing the second part? It wasn't Neal as he was playing the solo part over it. It was a pretty glaring mistake actually. Way short version too.
By the way, to sing these notes, this early in the morning is pretty tough and Arnel sounds pretty good. It's pretty RARE that any band sounds good on these early morning shows. The mix is always stifled and trying to hit a high B at 7 Am... Yikes. You can hear Arnel's voice 'waking up' and it sounds great by AWYWI. I did think he was a bit rough early on. His pitch is fine, but you can hear a bit of gravel.
They're definitely tuned down. The lower harmonies in AWYWI were way too loud. Gave the opening and chorus a way different vibe.

4 songs. City of Hope, which was shortened, but sounded good, Faithfully, shortened, and sounded ok. Don't Stop Believin, sounded good and Any Way You Want It, sounded off to me.

Didn't think anything really stands out. Emphasis on different words and extending words in Faithfully made it most un-enjoyable.

If I'm not mistaken, Neal's equipment enables him to loop rhythm parts through the speakers while he plays a solo and Jon's on keys.
For the record, the decision by Neal to play the higher pitched guitar wailing instead of the badass rhythm during City of Hope is a pretty stupid decision. It's the rhythm guitar that makes that song.

I thought Arnel did a really nice job, but I agree with you 100% on Faithfully. He sometimes began singing a line a bit earlier than he "should" have, which was a bit annoying to me. But overall, I loved the performance. Had to laugh when my brother sent me a text, asking if I was there. Unfortunately, I was already at my desk in Jersey. Few more weeks until the Arts Center show.

Is it just me or does it seem like Arnel's ability to effortlessly hit the notes has diminished since '08?

By the way, Stone Temple Pilots played on the outdoor summer stage at the Stone Pony Tuesday night -- great place to see a show. Would love to see Journey play there while in town for the show in Holmdel.

I hope I don't have a different opinion after attending a show next week but I don't think so to this point. The Today Show performance was at 8:30am the morning after a show. The likely insufficient time to warm up and singing on little rest would be difficult for anyone I would think.

Exactly!
Also, the band was up ALL NIGHT. Flew from Minneapolis at 4 am and stayed up all night to do the Today Show gig.
It's not easy to be up all night then go to a morning gig. Been there. It's not gonna be the best show.
Had the band been off the night before, that would've been the way to go, but "gotta make hay while the sun shines".

I had started from the bottom of the thread going up and hadn't read your post yet, glad to hear Arnel may have sounded better than the impression I was getting.

No, you're right. Saw them here in Irvine this past Saturday night and IMO, it was ugly. The set list is brutal and carries no flow. Arnel's vocals were drowned in the mix, and, Deen's vocals were very apparent.
In all the times that I've seen Journey since the 80s, I've NEVER heard them as loud as they were on Saturday night, almost as if they were trying to hide the vocals. The canned vocals were so perfect (and loud) that they overpowered Arnel at times.
Foreigner certainly carried the night; they were amazing.
EDIT
Just watched the video of this morning's performance and one thing that stands out is the difference between the band HAVING the canned backgrounds and not. HUGE difference not using them on AWYWI this morning.
