Only the Young live

Postby Gideon » Sun Jul 31, 2011 8:49 am

I'm watching videos from Irvine, CA this year and Arnel's sounding great on them, but does anyone else notice the incredibly cheesy pre-recorded synthesizers during the rhythm of Only the Young? I find them annoying and distracting.

I could post a zillion of them (it's not a phenomenon exclusive to the Irvine show), give me a sec.

Irvine

Live in Manila

etc. etc. etc.

This is how it's been played for years and it's not as noticeable when in the concert, but it stands out like a sore thumb on recordings. I remember seeing videos of Journey w/ Augeri on Youtube from a recorded show in Virginia in '99 or so and Jon was on accoustic guitar playing the rhythm. It sounded much better.

LOL, totally off topic, but damn Deen's a joy to watch behind the kit. Love Torpey's playing too, but man he could take some groove lessons from Deen. He always just looks like he's having a grand old time head boppin' back there. Looks like he just loves what he does and it shows. I love that. 8)

Yeah, my buddy calls Deen "Simba" because of the constant head shaking.

That was a pro-shot concert and sounded pretty good. Not sure why it was taken down. :?

I remember hearing that shit when I got Live in Manila. I was so excited to have a contemporary live version of that song and it totally ruined it. Terrible. I agree, much better to leave that shit out and have Jonathan doing some chords on the acoustic or clean electric guitar.

Yeah, I'm not sure who's decision it is, but it's a bad one. Cain's a talented S.O.B. and can certainly play the rhythm parts; I don't know if it's Jon wanting to toss in some synthesizers or Neal not wanting to be upstaged (since OTY is pretty rhythm dominated), but someone needs to get his head out of his ass.
