Journey Would Consider Playing Entire Classic Album on Tour

There’s no arguing that fans will always want to hear the hits when they go see bands with extensive, expansive catalogs in concert. The classics trump the new songs in terms of preference more often than not. While Journey are experiencing delight from fans when they perform new songs from ‘Eclipse,’ guitarist Neal Schon said the band would “absolutely” perform one of their quintessential albums in its entirety while on tour.

“Absolutely, I think that would be a gas to do, we just haven’t gotten there yet,” Schon told VH1 Radio Networks about the band’s attitude toward such an endeavor.

He continued, “I think if we wanted to do a whole show of ‘Escape’ songs or ‘Frontiers’ songs, I think it would absolutely fun to do. And you know, actually I think that [singer] Arnel [Pineda] is so bionic, the band will actually disagree with me but I think we could actually even do two albums in one night.”

Pineda is bionic, indeed, and two full albums in one evening would no doubt thrill fans, but the idea of Journey performing a classic album from back to front does beg a rather massive question: Would it be right without ex-singer Steve Perry at the helm? That’s certainly a polarizing debate that will split Journey diehards right down the middle.

Damn! The devil is always in the details. :D

But no problem, would say Neal. We'll just find a couple guys who want to work.........

Has Neal actually listened to AP as of late? Yeah oh...two albums in one night? maybe instrumentals?

As for splitting the diehards....some are already split....me (no surprise stand in the no thank you line)

So it's Neal who is pushing Arnel's voice to the limits and possibly destroying it.

Bionic?? :o

It sounds like Neal is thinking lead singers are some sort of disposable asset...I can't believe that he still doesn't get it.

From percolating on this site for as long as I have, I gathered that's been the general concensus regarding the singers before Arnel (minus JSS).

Or a couple who need to. Some only work when THEY want to. Not when Neal needs him to.

And getting paid for not working kinda shows what's what, too.

The keys to Journey still have the same owner.

Could you show some proof, for those of us who aren't intimately familiar with the Journey members' income or net worth?

So does Perry need to the cash or is he simply being a money-grubbing asshole on par with what some believe Neal to be? Not sure you can have it both ways.

madsplash wrote:The keys to Journey still have the same owner.

Yeah, Herbie handed them to Neal when he left.

Seeing as Eclipse will be disappearing off the charts again with no meaningful spike achieved from their two TV appearances, will Neal rethink his position of only supporting Eclipse for the 2012 tour or will he take a run at doing album specific shows next year before Arnel burns up completely?

Neal's exuberance tends to inflate his ego, cloud his judgment, and get the better of him.... and the band. I'm really pissed about the shortened set lists; they should have just played less shows, but shorter concerts don't lose him money.

Despite this grouped up appearance schedule they had last week, their gigs are pretty well spaced out with no "three in a rows" at all. They couldn't do any less or no one would want to tour with them. Looking back over the last few years, Foreigner and Night Ranger are both used to a more robust schedule.

I have faith in Arnel's voice; the boy has some serious power to him. But they're going to have to do something to get back to the 17 song set and take care of his voice.

Out of curiosity, have the recent shows been detuned?

I expect every show to be detuned from here on out for the rest of Arnel's Journey career. When they didn't step back up for the Today Show (as they have done for all their other TV appearances) that told me that they have passed the point of no return.
The four year mark was when both Perry and Augeri started changing vocally and Arnel is at that point now.
Kelly sings detuned too but Foreigner's catalog doesn't suffer that much as it was never written with all the focus on the vocalist more so than the actual music.

Yeah.....Herbie left the keys for Neal and he seems to drive the band into a the wall....maybe he needs some defensive driving classes...and his back seat driver Irv..does not seem read directions well...maybe a GPS?

This appears to sadly represent that singers are like napkins, where, when soiled, you just throw them away and get another one. While Neal may feel he is invincible,
the band may not be....the next time around. Maybe for the first, in a long time, Neal needs to actually look into the future. They burn this guy out and they will be
relegated to lounges and small fair venues. You've already got 3 players running on reserve, one who will probably pursue his Nashville interests, a bass player, who could draw his pension soon, and a singer, who could soon retire back to the tropics doing what he loves and be much more secure because of his opportunity with Journey.

They should be on an "Escape Anniversary" tour now. All about the Benjamin's. Eclipse theater tour in the fall after that where they play longer and feature the new music. But what do I know?

I like this idea Ed! Journey could bring out their absolute best, play longer sets, etc. They would just have to charge more. Are they worth the price?
I'll say this; they'd damn well better get a better sound guy and better equipment. They also better spend more time on polishing their singer in the
finer nuances of the English language. The nucleus is there, but whether it ripens or rots is yet to be seen.

Shit why not. When they have a night with Journey they basically play the entire Escape album as it is. What's adding Lay It Down, Dead Or Alive, and Who's Crying Now?

Sure, they play a lot of the album but in order? Don't Stop as the opening song? Huge Escape album cover behind the stage?

Think out of the box.

Fans always think out of the box. The band brings their boom box and their karaoke singer. (ok, that was just said in jest)

A Voice box...hmmm aren't they already a karoakecature of their former selves? Neal would be happy to just go out and play and have cardboard cutouts of the rest of the band and [insert name of current lead vocalist] here. That way he could be the star he's always fancied himself in his own mind...
