I have not bought Eclipse yet...

...but I plan to this week.

I know it's dropped out of the album charts, but how many copies has it sold thus far? All I can find online is first week sales...

After 18 months Arrival got to around 170k sold. I'm not sure if Eclipse will get there or not. We'll have to see after the second part of the tour in 2012. Arrival had the luxury of being a Sony product that could be discounted by multiple distributors and that helped puff up the numbers late in its shelf life to get over 300k sold. With the way CD sales are going, I don't think that will ever happen for Eclipse.

Walmart will eventually discount their Eclipse stock...but probably not for a couple years. Right now, the one near me has 30+ copies of AC/DC's Dirty Deeds remaster for $5. The Foreigner set (the new album w/ the hits CD + DVD) is down to $10 now from $11.88...

Where do you find this info? I would love to know where to look to see how a certain album has done so far.

Listened to Eclipse in its entirety yesterday. Still holds up. Easily in my top five Journey albums. Monster album. In terms of track sequencing, Revelation and Eclipse are both awesome. No filler!

One complete spin...no complete, rounded opinion yet but:

- it's not nearly as bad as the haters say it is
- I don't think it's quite as good as Neal or Andrew think it is
- the songs are too long, IMO
- don't have a favorite track yet
- I can hear why Neal compares it to Frontiers...much more guitar, less obvious commerciality

First cd i didn't buy from them, tried listening to it again today and the majority of the songs just dont have that replay value, very weak in the hook area(for journey).

To whom it may concern-sounds like a leftover from revelation...not horrible , but certainly not great
She's a mystery-sounds like a weaker attempt at making another "patiently"(the end of the song sounds great but waiting to get there is just average at best)
Chain of love- a minute and a half of waiting for the song to start to get that weak of a song....ugh!
Edge of the moment - Although the music is sound i just find the vocals annoying, boring and dull- it just is lackluster(i wanted to like this one but just can't get into it)
Resonate-To me this song is the opposite of City of love-i like the music and vocals up until the chorus and then it just dies its so anticlimatic-just a dull unremarkable chorus that doesnt have that replay value your accustomed to with a journey song, its umphless!)
City of hope -obviously the opposit of resonate, the chorus is catchy but everything that leads up to it is just lackluster and dull, it just seems to me they are not matching Arnels voice with the song properly, on this song as well as others
Ritual- this one is just another one that just doesn't grab me as a whole(there are parts i like- and this is true for many of the songs on the cd, but they are dwarfed by the stuff i dont like)
Human feel-This is a tuff one, i love the end of this song and i like the beginning but again the meat of the song just doesn't grab me enough to want to listen to it over and over
Anything is possible- this is the highlight of the cd, Neal might hate this but this is what this band excels at, the song works , it matches Arnels voice, its got replay value, nice guitars, hooks and balance,a great catchy chorus
Someone- the other highlight of this cd-classic journey sound, catchy, balanced-replay value
Tantra-Epic! - I give journey credit for experimenting, but i think this was the only song that truly worked on this cd and it might be Arnels finest moment.
Venus- I initially thought this was a skipper, but listening one more time , I'm starting to get this , its more of an outro but i think it fits the cd as a whole, its like Neal is saying " this is our rock album , hear me shred!"

The cd as a whole for me is their weakest effort so far, 3 solids songs, 8 songs that say "we are trying to do something different and we are not quite that good at it yet(filler). 1 instrumental that is somewhat growing on me . Overall i would place this in a 65-70% range. what i dont get is, before Escape, Journey was a rock band so they shouldn't have had such a hard time doing a "rock cd" . My personal belief is that Arnel while a strong singer, is not a strong rock singer, and Cain while a strong writer may not be a strong Rock writer. There's a huge difference in the music when Rolie/ Perry/Schon wrote together as compared to Cain/ Perry/Schon , and even moreso with Schon/Cain. If they do another cd i think they should experiment with 3-4 songs in hope that 1 -2 will work and go back to the Journey formula with 6-8 songs and bring in some other writers to assist (i.e jack blades or even Hugo, this guy knows how to write journey sounding music better than anyone i have heard)

Question: Wasn't Revelation packaged with re-recorded Perry hits and a DVD?

I think that probably had more to do with it selling than the actual new material it had, JMHO.

Oh believe me, we have hashed this out and rehashed this out many, many times. I believe the same way you do in regards to the re-records, but others here will vehemently disagree.

The package was a phenomenal deal and the promo was off the charts, but I don't think those re-records, the same ones that most casual Journey fans already had, made anyone buy the album.

Journey's track record of selling new material (or more accurately, NOT selling new material) proves this wrong. Revelation was a hit because Glee and Sopranos raised their profile. Get rid of the hits, and we'd be looking at Eclipse like numbers or worse.

You're not comparing apples to apples, though. More accurately, get rid of Revelation's promo on Oprah, Ellen and CBS, its GQ exposure, its 2 charting singles (especially AATY), its exceptional 3 disc pricing and the "story" traveling around the music world, and then you'd have Eclipse-like numbers. You're acting as though Eclipse had the same promo, the same 3 disc package and the same pricing. It didn't.

All that Revelation promo did not coincide with Revelation's release. The CBS show did, but the other programs/coverage (Ellen,Oprah, etc) happened later. As I said, the top ten debut was based on the strength of DSB and little else. Not sure how any current lineup fan can deny this. Eclipse debuted decently, but ensuing promo (CBS Sunday Morning, NBC Today Show) did not help it all. Why? No Perry hits = nobody cares.
