Different chord progression choices, but when Brewster makes the guitar cry and sing, he has similar choices to Neal. He plays with the same degree of heart. Short answer is, yeah, I hear the similarities. So did Randy Jackson and Perry for that matter (obviously).

I went back and watched some vids of the FTLOSM tour and some of the sound was almost like Neal was there.

On the Journey tunes, yes, because he's copying what came before him. Mimicry is easy because you have a road map to follow. The real test is what does the artist originate. That's the mark of greatness.

On the Perry originals, there's similarities between Brewster and Schon, yes, but the character of their play is unique to the individuals. You can duplicate moments here and there, sourced by influence (all artist's have them, Neal included), but by and large, it's just not the same thing, and that's because they're individual human beings. By example, I can give two artists the exact same photo to draw a portrait from, and I guarantee you they will turn in very different looking illustrations.

I don't think Brewster is any sort of copy or doppelganger of Schon...but influence isn't always in your face.

The guitarists that I think sound most like Neal Schon are...

Josh Ramos (The Storm, Hardline)
Lincoln Brewster (Steve Perry band)
Steve Lukather (Toto)
Frankie Sullivan (Survivor)

And of course you can hear a lot of the influences on Neal's playing of guys that he grew up listening to or playing with, like Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, etc, etc.

No, not a doppelganger anymore than Neal is a doppelganger of Hendrix or Clapton. It's influence. Doubtless he listened to Journey and tried to play along with Schon at some point in his youth the same way Schon tried to play along with Hendrix and Clapton in his. Nothing wrong with it. Nobody lives in a vacuum. All artists learn from those who came before them. But the mark of a true artist is if they grow beyond the influence and create something unique to themselves. (i.e. Perry evolving the Sam Cooke-isms into an approach unique to Perry).

Neal has a way if of playing "turn-arounds" on his lead work that is pretty unique to Neal....

a good example is the brief 1st lead and the full lead in Stone In Love

I actually heard Lincoln play BEFORE I knew that he played for Perry and thought the similarities were notable. He is currently playing contemporary Christian music , which is the world in which I "live".

He is not Schon, but has simlar "stylings" in my very amateur opinion.

Is that meant in a good way? The guy seems like he has it together and is a great musician, but you never can tell with those preacher types.

Been doing this the last couple days myself, not to hear Perry, but for the musicianship on the album. I've suddenly been getting something else out of it and it's been excellent. :D

How can you not hear the similarities between Schon and Lukather???

They sound a hell of a lot a like in style and sometimes tone.

Now, as for Frankie Sullivan, there isn't as much of a similarity between his playing and Schon's. But their similar in the sense that their two of the best melodic soloists.

I'm shocked that you can't hear the strong similarities between Schon and Lukather! They've even spoken in interviews about how they sound a lot a-like.

just my opinion, Lincoln sounds like Schon used to sound, before all the butterfly licks that consume his solos.

Link can also do a freaking NUNO and Luke at the drop of a hat.

Hes thats good...

I'm with 'Drew on this one. Lukather and Schon aren't even remotely similar. Survivor was always trying to be Journey, so maybe that's where you're hearing similarities to Schon, but he can't play on Schon's level. Simply not the same class of ability. And Schon knows how to make the guitar deeply emotional (when he wants to). Sullivan's always come off like contrived attempts to get there, but never really hits the mark. Sorry, I know you're a fan, and I'm not telling you not to be, but you put it out there for comparison.

Well, like I said, Schon and Lukather have said in separate interviews on more than one occasion that they are very similar in style and tone. (Mostly Neal's old Journey tone)

As for Sullivan. I agree that his soloing is not at the same level as Schon's, (I actually prefer Sullivan's riff and rhythm playing) but it's still very good, and there aren't very many players who play as melodically as Sullivan.

I'm definitely not saying that anyone would confuse Sullivan's playing as being Schon's. Not to the extent that they might think that Josh Ramos' playing is Schon's.

Listen to Frankie Sullivan's guitar playing at the end of Survivor's "Is This Love." It's reminiscent of some of the melodic soloing that Schon might play at the end of one of Journey's lighter-Rock songs.
