I have to admit this album had a lot of good songs on it that were brought down by a lot of fat. Had they went with a 10 song album this album could've been Journey's best album in quite awhile.

A track listing of:

Faith In The Heartland
The Place In Your Heart
A Better Life
Beyond The Clouds (Wish this had been released as a single because the harmonies between Augeri and Deen are great and it's a killer song)
Out Of Harms Way
Every Generation
Gone Crazy (Neal or Deen singing instead of Ross)
Better Together (Although I'd prefer a better song here, but with what they released it makes the cut)
It's Never Too Late
Knowing That You Love Me

The album would still be hit or miss in parts, but what pisses me off about the actual release is there is way to much fat on the album that should've been trimmed before release. You also have to wonder how much giving the album away at concerts hurt the actual album sales.

I think Gone Crazy should have been left off altogether...and Steve should have sang Every Generation...

I like the music for Gone Crazy, even the lyrics aren't bad. The vocals are pure shit (Sorry if you're reading this Ross).
I don't mind Jon's vocs that much as long as it's in moderation although Steve singing Every Generation probably would've added a lot to that song.

yeah, I don't think Cain sang it poorly...I just think Steve would have injected some flair into it...

I like the album a lot. I even like Believe. Hate Gone Crazy and In Self Defense....and could do without Butterfly. And yeah - Every Generation should have been Deen-O singing. Pride of the Family, too.

Some good songs, but sonically it sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom. I have audience recorded bootlegs that sound clearer.

I agree. This album really wasn't terrible once you trimmed the fat, but the sound and really bad songs just colored my impression of it for a long time.

I think Generations was one of those deals where the band was wanting to put something out since it had been a few years since the release of Arrival. I know a lot of people here think the album stinks, and believe me, there are songs on it I press skip on, but it's not total trash.

Augeri has said he was readying songs for a solo project (Believe and Butterfly etc) and the band reluctantly decided to put something out. Neal's real creative passion lied with SoulSirkus. Once Arrival flopped and Augeri's voice started to go, so did their interest in releasing new material. Generations has the potential to be great, but has too much crap.

Still love the album, though it's been surpassed by Eclipse.

But put me on the side that really Likes Every Generation a lot. Cain's vox invluded.

That weaving of the kinda rockabilly piano and Schon's guitar is awesome.

Maybe it would be better if they hadn't released Red 13 and mixed the songs with the best stuff of Generations:

1 - Faith in the Heartland
2 - The Place in Your Heart
3 - Walking Away From the Edge
4 - A Better Life
5 - Knowing That You Love Me
6 - State of Grace (without intro)
7 - Better Together
8 - Every Generation
9 - Out of the Harms Way
10 - I Can Breathe
11 - Never Too Late
12 - Beyond the Clouds

While Generations admittedly has alot of stinkers on it. It at least has some high points that demanded repeated listens. Something that Eclipse lacks for me.

You guys have gotten me into listening to a few Generation songs for the rest of my work day. Followed by Red 13, and then Arrival.

If I were to rank all of the songs from both albums about half of Generations would be on top and the other half on the bottom...with all of Eclipse in the middle. I think that sums up how I feel about both albums, perfectly.

There are only 3 songs off Generations that I like.

Faith in the heartland
The place in your heart
Knowing that you love me

Two of those I prefer sung by a different vocalist.

Yes it is. The way they produced this album makes it unlistenable for me. If it had better production, I'd like it a LOT more. It is the worst produced album Journey has ever released.

It sounds like a rock record to me. It doesn't have printine million-dollar production...but you make it sound like it's some kind of 3rd generation casette demo. It's far from unlistenable...but I realize that you quantified your statement with a "for me" so there's really no need in me arguing the point. :D

I actually agree with this. I think that Generations had better songs, but the stinkers on it are far worse than the entire Eclipse album.

In comparison with Revelations I think the top songs on that would rank mid pack on Generations and the stinkers would be with the stinkers on Generations.

The vocals sounds like they were phoned in. By phoned in I mean he called up Neal and played a cassette over the phone and Neal held the phone up to another recorder. There is so much hiss and crap that it's pathetic.

Whether that is the mix or production, or whatever....it sounds horrible.

That is exactly how it sounds to me. Every time Augeri sings any word beginning or ending in "S" or "sh", for example, it sounds so bad that I simply do not want to hear it again. It's annoying and it should have never been released sounding like that.
