I guess I am losing interest in Journey...

I find myself listening to Work of Art, Toby Hitchcock and others more than Journey these days. I played Eclipse once and took it out of my truck CD player. The two Work of Art, Hitchcock and even Steel House Lane, Shy and old Survivor CDs have filled in the six available slots. I guess for me Journey has left the building as far as the type of melodies and big sound that I liked going back to when the Raspberries first hit the scene. Just my preference, but I am glad there are others that have stepped up to the plate and I don't have to depend on Schon and company for my MR fix. I saw Kenney Chesney at Foxboro a couple of weeks ago and people from six to sixty were rocking out like they do to the Journey Dirty Dozen.

Chin up, dude. Do all of us a favor and give Eclipse a couple more spins. I'm here to tell you that it does grow on you. It did, me. There are hooks aplenty on that record. Don't go to the dark side (Country). If you decide to give Eclipse a fair chance, come back and give us your review, again, afterwards. DO IT!!!

Funny thing. Obviously, I'm a Survivor fan, so we have that in common. But I'm the happiest with Eclipse that I've been with any Journey album in a long time.
Morphing music...

I will give Eclipse another spin, but my wife had it in her SUV and it ended up back on the kitchen counter after one spin. She loves Journey and we have seen them and Steve Perry solo a number of times. Speaking of country...I do a lot of singing and playing in the New England area and there is a rising demand for country music (which is more like "rocking" country these days) from the younger folks. I had a talk with a guy who used to be a big 80's rocker and he is now working on a country project because it has essentially taken the place of melodic rock for him. He told me that the only music he can stomach on the radio is country. Unless you like death metal, rap, or music for 14-year old girls there isn't much out there. I thought that was interesting and I knew where he was coming from. I hear the same approach to melodies in a lot of country these days. In my mind a good melody and good musicians are where its at no matter the style.

I love the two albums from Work of Art! No need to give those albums time to "grow"! They are instant classics from the first spin! The Hitchcock album blew me away as well. Sounds excellent in my car stereo! I have Shy's Unfinished Business and Sunset and Vine albums. I actually like Unfinished Business better, but I absolutely agree with you. I think those albums have huge melodies and hooks.

Sounds to me like you're the typical casual Journey fan that is only familiar with their hit songs and your mindset is that you'll never like anything NEW from Journey, no matter how good it is!

Eclipse was a grower for me too...I like it now. I don't "love" it, but I like it for what it is, which is not old-style Journey.
Anyway, it's natural to ebb and flow with bands...especially when good stuff like WOA and Toby Hitchcock comes out...it's good to put some stuff down for a while. Being a fan of a band doesn't mean you have to listen to them everyday. The Beatles & King's X are 2 of my all-time faves, but I usually only hear them on Shuffle.

While I agree with you in regards to Eclipse, the new Work Of Art isnt AS great as people say it is. The problem I have with the new Work Of Art is that the album is like one big song , split into 10-12 songs.Everything sounds pretty much the same. It grew on me as fast as I got tired of it .

Some of it is old-style. "Ritual" and "Someone" could easily fit at home on Arrival. In the case of "She's a Mystery", it's very old-school, almost sounds like an Evolution track. The rest is different, arguably not better, but different. I still say that fans of Red 13 will love this. Everyone else? Prolly not.

Just because he doesn't like Eclipse doesn't mean he's a casual fan... I've seen every incarnation of Journey (except Fleishman)... and have every album.. and I can't stand Eclipse... and I'm no
casual fan..

Between the two albums, Artwork is definitely my favorite.

I loved Red13, and enjoyed the new album a couple of times, but it hasn't really grown on me yet. Still doesn't come close to Arrival for me though.

"Arrival" has alot more BIG anthemic hooks. "Eclipse" is musically interesting tho, plus no wedding ballad filler. If it had one more strong track like "Higher Place" on it, it would be one of the best Journey albums of all time.
