Journey - Take Note

The most appropro line certainly applies ....

"A wise man once said -- 'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave," agrees Michael Stipe. "We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we're going to walk away from it. I hope our fans realize this wasn't an easy decision; but all things must end; and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way. We have to thank all the people who helped us be R.E.M. for these 31 years, our deepest gratitude to those who allowed us to do this. It's been amazing."

Break up, stay together, play hits, force new songs, whatever...bands can do what they want, when they want for as long as people keep coming to see them.

I am a fan of R.E.M. (in a Greatest Hits kinda way) and totally respect them...they are bowing out on their own terms and not because others think they should.

With Eclipse, this lineup is just getting started. I want at least 2 more albums before they call it a day.

If the guys in R.E.M. are happy with their accomplishments and want to call it a day, that's great. I don't think any musician who still wants to write new material or perform (while they are still able to do so with quality) should ever have to do that.

Besides, REM was THE most over rated band ever.

Certainly a matter of opinion.

I agree, Greg.
REM is actually the true definition of a world band. Having their albums chart in the Top 10 in over two dozen countries during their career is quite an accomplishment. They were already inducted into the R&R HOF four years ago. As I mentioned in another thread, their last release was a worldwide success breaking into the Top 20 in 18 countries. Why not go out on top?

I think it depends on how Neal/Jon feel. If their egos are bruised by the lack of sales from Eclipse like they were with Arrival, they may revert to their idea of doing EP's or just focusing on the classics. They still tend be of the breed that cares too much about album sales, and if they are weak, it lessens their motivation to produce something new.

No doubt about that. Read about him talking about how he "Won" his current skank away from her husband.

“You wrote in your book she had to choose between us - and that Tareq won. Guess you’ll have to rewrite that now - because I won!” - Neal Schon to The Daily Beast, regarding a recent book on Michaele Salahi.

I don`t care about Neal`s amorous liaisons...I`m just interested in his musical career.

Of course you don't. Just like many don't care about Arnel pushing shopping carts either but Nomota didn't mind pushing the story down everyone's throat. When it comes to using the media for your ends, good and bad go hand in hand.

Absolutely can not stand REM. Never could. Probably the only band whose music I've ever said I hated.

Wow, hated?  I don't think I've ever hated any music. If I don't like the music, I won't even listen to it enough to hate it LOL. If I don't like it, I'm completely indifferent, won't even waste my time. But if I like the music..........LOL watch out.......Deb's a built in street-team!

Yeah, well, a wiser and much more fun guy wrote:

"“The longest and most destructive party ever held is now into its fourth generation and still no one shows any signs of leaving. Somebody did once look at his watch, but that was eleven years ago now, and there has been no follow up.”

I think I know which party I would rather be at.
