Kelly Hanson takes a little swipe at Arnel/Journey?

Postby Pacfanweb » Wed Sep 28, 2011 11:28 pm

In the interview on the front page?

"I get compared a lot to Lou Gramm; it comes with the territory," Hansen comments. "But the band is not trying to be a previous version of itself. I came into the band as a singer with good reputation, not as someone just discovered on the Internet. I made a connection with Mick, who is such a vast talent of accomplishment and high standards, and great to work with. I can do my best with someone like that - because I know he's not going to accept second best."

Little dig at Arnel, and/or Journey? Did they all get along on the tour together? Or did he not mean anything by that? Sure seems curious, seeing how he was on tour this year with a band that found their previously-unknown singer on the internet.

ha ha ...saw that quote in G~boy's sig and was going to ask him where it came from.
I just recently learned that I friggin' love Kelly Hansen, he is an incredible performer,
frontman, singer, star ...
I don't think he meant it as a jab, he just wants us/the fans to know he has credentials!!

I guess Arnel's got credentials too. A platinum album under his belt, fronting one of the most succesful American classic rock bands ever...

Just sayin'

Yeah, I took it to be directed at Arnel and that he must be jealous he does have Arnel's pipes. If he did, he'd be doing Lou's money note on IWKWLI.

And I think took a swipe at Neal a couple of weeks ago on TMZ, when talking about the Neal/Michaele deal, (paraphrasing) he couldn't stand to be around one of those reality stars/wives for 5 minutes.

Both Jack Blades and Kelly said something to the effect of it being their "jobs" to "warm up" the audience during Night Ranger's and Foreigner's respective sets, which I thought was odd. Jack also said something to the effect of NR being the "new kids" because they'd only been performing 30 years and "just ask Neal."

Seems like there might be some wagging going on ...

I suspected this was not really the case, and did some research last night. Turns out I was correct - the comment was taken from an old interview Kelly had done soon after joining Foreigner, which I'm guessing would have been 2005 or early 2006. I know that Arnel and Kelly are personal friends, and that both think very highly of each other. This was nothing but an issue of unfortunate timing, and I believe it will be made well very soon.

Saw Jack standing at the side of the stage with, um, herself in Austin ... that was all.

I'm sure things are cool; the warmup comment was just weird from both other bands.

Reading jabs into a comment about "warming up the crowd?" This is playing semantics at its worst. If anything, I read the comment as a statement of humility, implying "We're opening for the band with the most-downloaded track of all time, so it's our job to get the party going."

I believe he and Neal have been friends for 30 years, he is just saying they are the new kids as compared to Neal's 40 years in the music biz.

I took it as Kelly saying he had a career in the industry before Foreigner. The guy had a Top 40 hit with Hurricane, he didn't just didn't come off the boat six years ago. Hanson's stage presence alone makes it clear that the guy is a veteran of the rock world.

I've been to hundreds of concerts and don't ever recall an opening act referring to it being their job to warm up the crowd. To have both bands do it at all three concerts this weekend seemed strange to me.

But then, I tend to over-code everything, so who knows?

Think of all the shows where a well-known opener asks the crowd, "Are you guys ready for (headliner)?" To me it's sort of the same thing. I believe these bands are really grateful for the opportunity and not shy to acknowledge it.

He wasn't aware either, and it was only that little bit in the bio info - not the main portion of the article. You're welcome, btw. :)

It is their jobs to warm up the crowd for the headliner. Evidently they're taking that job seriously because they're getting great reviews, which a lot of times, puts their sets being better than Journey. Good for them.

I'm sure the comment was not directed at Arnel. He was in bands for years and was found - he didn't sing karaoke into a mirror to record it for some stupid contest.

You CAN direct it at the Home Depot nimrod singing for Boston and the recent Freddie Mercury contestant though as far as I'm concerned. If I had honed my craft for years like Kelly I'm sure these "discoveries" would tick me of as well.

The press release was new, but that comment was way old (I had heard it before).

Kelly called me at 3am this morning, quite upset that the PR person hired to do this job for him had taken some old quotes and banged out a new item for printing.
That person I am told by Kelly is no longer in such a role.

The comment did indeed come before Arnel and Kelly was saying to me, it came from a particularly bad interview where the interviewer had zero idea of Kelly's history before Foreigner and was being "an ass" about his credentials....hence his reply. Which has now been taken way out of context.

Journey are aware of the statement, management is aware, Kelly says he has been hanging with Arnel all tour and constantly giving him props about the great job he is doing. He is upset that anything could be made of this badly timed press release.

He may issue an updated statement himself, I am waiting to hear.
