Sounds great to me. I don't see a problem with the guy at all, but that's me.
He's hitting some killer notes in that tune.
It's weird, in this clip, the backups are nearly louder than Arnel.
The version of this song is pretty freakin' rocking too. Haven't
heard it with the harmonica solo dropped in there.

Dang, that's quite the good video quality. My Droid BLOWS.

This is tuned down 1/2 step. Surprised the heck out of me. But it was soo awesome, I was compelled to pick up the guitar to play along and took me a sec to recognize why it didn't match up.

Cain's harmonica sounds off... wonder if he didn't get the memo that the song was de-tuned? Not sure...

Cool vid, Arnel wore that outfit in TO

Was that Neal blowing on the guitar strings?? I don't think I've seen him do that since, hell, I don't think. I've ever actually witnessed it. Only heard about it...

That was a great moment from both Neal and Arnel. Too bad such moments are so rare on this tour. What this proves is that both are so capable.

Arnel's been spot on. Neal's playing, on the other hand, has been overstated and self-indulgent.

My favorite Journey song. I love that Arnel does that stratospherically high note. :D

I wish someone would throw the harmonica out of the bus window. tThis is a rock concert, not The Grand Ole Opry.

If the songs don't blow his voice over time like Perry and Augeri, all that extra yelling is going to. Glad to see some stuff like that. He was pretty much blah at the show I caught in NJ earlier on the tour.

Sounds like total ass downtuned. The open D chords almost sound like Tool, who plays in Drop D. That's cool if you're listening to Tool... not fucking Journey.

Wheel in the sky at 10 mins long? Even if you cut out the vocal acrobatics and the pre guitar and blowing in the beginning, they took 8 minutes to do a 4:15 song.Thats just too long, did they do this with every song?

No, but they are milking the endings of most the songs for all their worth.

I don't have a problem with tat's at all....for example Sebastian Bach.

I just don't get the frontman vibe from AP...at all....I can't explain why.

I loved Sammy with VH and I think Kelly is doing a great job with Foreigner...I loved both of the original singers in these
bands but I also enjoy the replacement singers...so it's not that I can't like someone new.

It's simple: Kelly has a level of sophistication and polish about him that Arnel doesn't have.
It is noticeable and it's not just you getting a bad vibe.

9 out of 10 classic rock bands are tuned down a half step or maybe in some cases a whole step simply because those leadsingers aren`t in their twenties anymore.
Vocal chords are fragile,an intensive tour for any singer even a juvenile one is an ordeal...and remember in Journey`s case a 44 years old Pineda has to recapture a 30 years old Perry.
I think Pineda is doing a mighty fine job..but alas some people won`t give the guy any slack.

Well I know Matt was a fan until recently and, to be fair to him and others who sympathize with his sentiments, Arnel & Journey have made some serious blunders along the way.
I can understand listening to the back catalog and Perry's finest moments and being dissatisfied, especially when we know they all can do better.

Yup.
I possess the rare ability to recognize the shortcomings of Journey: current and former members included. Not to mention I've been saying this for months.

Downtuning may or may not be the trend, but Journey cannot be downtuned. It doesn't work for me. I don't mind Foreigner, Def Lepp, or Billy Joel downtuned. But Journey just flat out doesn't work.

Also, just off the top of my head, Bruce Springsteen is 62 now and he plays in standard tuning. The America singers are in their 60s - standard tuning. Same with Burton Cummings. All substantially older than Arnel. You make it sound as if every older band/performer out there is downtuning. Not true. But that's really not what matters to me.

In the end, the simple fact is downtuning doesn't work for everyone in my ears. It doesn't work for Journey and it sounds like shit. Downtuned Journey songs didn't sound good 17 years ago when Steve fuckin Perry did it - and they sure don't sound good now when Arnel does it!

With all due respect to Bruce Springsteen and Burton Cummings but Journey/Perry vocals are in a different league, you just can`t compare them.
It`s like comparing a long distance runner with a sprinter..both are atheletes but they are not the same.
Pineda`s performances during the beginning of the Revelation tour (2008)were on key but no matter what ..on key or a a step down.. he gets crucified anyway.

Burton Cummings in his heyday was every bit the singer Steve Perry was. Listen to These Eyes and Laughing - he's hitting some deceivingly high notes there. And his voice is unbelievably unique. I've heard plenty of people do a very convincing Perry. I've heard NO BODY do a convincing Burton Cummings. Not even close.

Your long distance runner and sprinter analogy really makes no sense at all. All parties involved are singing on tour - the same activity. The fact that some can do it at their original level (or at least do their voices justice in the original key) at an older age is all that matters in the comparison. Range is all relative.

If you want a better sports analogy, think of a knuckleballer vs a fastball/heat thrower. The fact that the knuckleballer can keep winning well into his 40s and the fastball thrower burns his arm out quicker doesn't diminish the knuckleballer's ability to stay at the top of his game. It works for the knuckleballer. It doesn't work for the fastball thrower once he can't break 90 MPH anymore. Similarly, downtuning works for some bands and fails miserably for others.

Journey music just involves too many happy, major key sounding songs with lots of open chords on the guitar. Eb tuning doesn't work.

And actually, I don't really recall criticizing Arnel in this thread at all. Interesting how your fanboy zeal colors your reading comprehension. Arnel's vocals don't necessarily bother me downtuned. I don't really like his delivery at all. But the instruments are what bother me more in this tuning.

Matt you know I agree with you about Burton's capabilities as a singer and that no-one can replicate his voice. But as far as him not downtuning, I'm pretty sure he has done that with at least some songs on this past years's tour - especially this one (not that I mind - he still sounds great):
