Concert review: A three-peat for Journey at Hollywood Bowl with Foreigner, Night Ranger

LOS ANGELES -- Perhaps Journey never will get the credit it deserves, but there is no denying the San Francisco band's massive popularity after a triumphant sold-out concert Tuesday at Hollywood Bowl before a crowd of more than 18,000 -- Journey's biggest headlining show in the Southland since performing at the Rose Bowl on July 2, 1982.
What makes Journey ability to attract such a large audience especially impressive is the Hollywood Bowl show was the band's third local arena concert over the past two months after stops in Santa Barbara and Irvine. Plus the fact that nearly every song was at least 25 years old.

While Journey's drawing power and popularity have been indisputable for many years, the group was granted new life when "Don't Stop Believing" found its way back into pop culture coupled with new singer Arnel Pineda joining in late 2007.

Pineda, of the Philippines, does not quite measure up to the great Steve Perry -- no one does -- but the little singer with the big voice has granted Journey a whole new Asian audience, and essentially that's the difference between Journey playing venues like Gibson Amphitheatre or the Palladium compared to arena dates.

When Pineda first started, he went out of his way to duplicate Perry's inflections to make the old songs sound as similar as possible. But now that the singer has been around nearly four years while gaining confidence every step of the way, Pineda puts his own stamp on all the classics like "Separate Ways," "Faithfully," "Open Arms" and "Lights" and "Wheel in the Sky" -- and even those most loyal to Perry have got to be impressed with thousands of people going crazy and singing along for a whole evening.
Journey's performance was similar to the Irvine show, as most of the material was culled from the band's greatest-hits packages. But as the six-month tour winds down, the band seems to have found a renewed enthusiasm, particularly guitarist Neal Schon, who got so carried away during "Any Way You Want it" that he took a foray into the crowd, then presented a teenager with his guitar as a parting gift before the group launched into "Don't Stop Believing" to close the night.

Confetti streamed, fireworks exploded overhead, and everyone was buzzing with excitement as they made their way to the exit -- a successful performance indeed.

Foreigner supported, and though the band went over well, it was a bit weird not having a single original member, as founding guitarist Mick Jones is taking a hiatus because of personal issues. Though singer Kelly Hansen has been in place for six years and continues to prove a capable replacement for legendary Lou Gramm -- no easy task, as others have tried with less success -- there was something off-putting about the whole thing.

Nevertheless, the old hits like "Double Vision," "Head Games," "Waiting For a Girl Like You" and "Juke Box Hero" all sounded great, and an accompanying light show was well-done, so probably 99 percent of the crowd did not give a hoot who was standing up there; the audience just wanted to have a good time, and Foreigner delivered.

Night Ranger opened, jumping on stage 10 minutes early to get a couple of extra songs in -- including a Doors number as an homage to the classic venue -- and Jack Blades and his bandmates did a fine job with favorites like "Don't Tell You Me You Love Me," "Sister Christian" and "(You Can Still) Rock in America."

Have to admit, these guitar give-aways are a very cool thing he's doing.

From what I could see, the kid was disabled or had Down Syndrome. I think that's why Neal waded out to him. Schon gets a few redeemable points for that but he's still at a deficit for not playing AIP.

Don, do you think there is any band out there, in "support" of an album, with an AC charting song not playing it live?!? Yeah, maybe a new act, but a 38 year old band?!? "Good evening, this next song is City Of Hope. It's not on the AC chart ... so we're gonna play it." :?

Foreigner did it with their third release off of Can't Slow Down but the song didn't even break the top 30 so it's understandable.
For Journey, they are talking about getting songs on the radio from Eclipse and they had AIP at the cusp of The A/C top 20 which would have been a great feat for them but they have mysteriously turned their back on the tune. I don't understand that.
Then, to add songs like Escape or La Do Da which aren't radio staples or even cult classics, I just don't get it.

Unfortunately, the next tour may be even more bizarre as Neal (the guy who says he wants to showcase new music) has Arnel already prepping for pre-Captured tunes like Line Of Fire and WWY.
Totally baffling.

I keep thinking of Steve Perry telling the crowd in Japan on their second show of the Escape tour that "We're gonna play 1,2,3,4,5 new songs for you...Don't Stop Believin'" and the band actually did do that through the entire tour.

From all the talk of Neal and Jon, I thought they would stick to their guns, especially with concert tickets selling regardless. I guess times have changed.

And I'm not buying the three bands/no time line. If they got time for Escape/SHML/ La Do Da, then they have time to play new music.

I mean, last night was a perfect opportunity. ET is there, it's L.A. you've got the fireworks all planned out, why not play AIP? With only five shows left all pretty much sold out, what's the downside?

Agreed, Don. I don't even bother trying to figure out their logic anymore.

See the thread Arrival tour Vs Elcipse tour.

Arrival was a 3 band tour Journey played 19 songs @ the Arrival show I saw with 4 tracks off of Arrival.. I have posted the set list on the thread.

On an Escape show I have " Blue Sky Party" Perry says something like we are going to play some new Escape music for you they did DSB, SIL, KOR right in a row.

I also belive on the Frontiers tour they did a few of the B side tracks.

When they did some of the final shows in FLA with JSS they did some deeper cuts that went over pretty well. I think they opened with Rubicion, they played Open the Door and Where Were You ( they did this 3 times I saw JSS and he killed this one) I think they did Line of Fire also

Not sure if they did this at other shows this year but the fireworks were pretty cool. Go to the 3:50 minute mark and check it out.

The unplayed AIP slips one spot to #25 on this week's A/C chart.

#25 is pretty damn good considering nobody ever hears it live. I'd sure like to hear why none of the better songs off of Eclipse got played in the states
this year. Talk about ineptness on the part of whoever chooses the set lists to play.
Apparently, what the folks on MR have to say, has little to no impact on these things.

Where Were You? LOVE that song. One of Perry's finest moments as a singer. It will be interesting to hear Arnel do it. Having said that, the "no new songs" policy makes no sense and the band should really reconsider that.

Yes... Fireworks. Doesn't that qualify as a CD cut (per greatest hits live)?

Listening to it right now. After 4½ months, it's become my favorite track off of Eclipse. Something about the intro just gets me every time.

Journey is a bunch of pussies. After more than 10 years since reforming, they have no faith in their new material, or themselves as a viable musical entity outside of the dozen. Even Augeri plays more new material at his shows.

The dozen is a sure thing. It sells, year after year. What if they played all their newest material from 1998 on and there was a mass exodus. That could be a real possibility. So who are the pussies, the fans or the band?

They don't have to play exclusively new material, but at least 3 new tracks minimum. Have some balls.

First, it was health reasons, now its personal issues. Was Mick hiking in Hawaii recently by any chance? Whatever it is, it's obviously more serious than fans are being led to believe.

Good point. And if they must only play one track, play one of the tracks with some balls. Nobody wants to hear city of hope, so why keep cramming that one down our throats? It's not even one of the more rocking tracks and Neal supposedly wanted to rock more. Whatever. So I wonder what difference it would make if they play chain of love or some other track nobody wants to hear either. At least then they'd be rocking more like they said they wanted to. Otherwise, play a song folks might actually want to hear such as Anything is possible, or Someone. This band is in serious freefall in my opinion. Still love the music though.

In Las Vegas last weekend Jon was almost apologetic when he introduced COH. Kinda like: "we hope you'll let us play this new song...".

Maybe after they get some time off they can look back and read some of the comments and hear feedback about what didn't work. Maybe they will take it into consideration for shaping next year's tour.....one can hope, anyway.

I would think this means the end of the hard rock album experiment. Dismal sales and not even the gumption to play the songs live doesn't lend itself to a sequel.
This when an outspoken frontman might have made a difference, at least as far as the setlist. Someone to say "Hey, I contributed on this album, I want to sing the songs I helped write at least once on this tour."

You should have posted this over at Plokker central. Maybe it is time for AP to develop some LSD.
