Musical to do: Journey, the Head and the Heart, New Year's Eve shows, and when's a band a cover band?

Journey. "Greatest Hits." There'll be a lot of them at the Rose Garden tonight.

Journey is at the Rose Garden tonight. Well, guitarist Neal Schon is at the Rose Garden tonight with a bunch of other guys who have joined him in Journey, but weren't in Journey when, say, "Don't Stop Believin'" was released.

This is not to slight those guys in anyway. If Steve Perry doesn't want to sing, he's free not to sing. And good on 'em for still being able to work arenas. That's no small accomplishment.

Current Drummer Deen Castronovo is a Keizer guy. Kyle O'Brien had a nice chat with him that appeared in last week's A&E. Fine and talented musicians, all.

But it's just that ... have you seen the photo of Axl Rose? It's from Rock In Rio, and it makes him look worse than this video does, but then the video makes you wonder why anyone would pay any amount of money to go see Guns 'N' Roses when there's surely a perfectly good tribute band you can see a lot cheaper.

The question is this: At what point is a band just a cover band?

That's not Guns 'N' Roses in that video, even if Axl is there. Is this Journey, or Neal Shon and friends?

The follow-up: Does it matter to you?

In 2011, I'd much rather pay $15 to see a good GnR tribute band than $60 to see whatever Axl's dragging around the world. Probably the same is true for Van Halen. There are some really good Journey tribute bands out and about. Would that be just as fun?

They're on stage pretending to be one band and we're out front pretending to be younger than we are. That's what's going on, isn't it?

If you're not going to the Big Sing-Along at the Rose Quarter tonight -- Foreigner and Night Ranger and possibly a F-list celebrity are there too -- the Head and the Heart is at the Crystal Ballroom.

Definitely! I haven't seen Journey live since '82, but have and will continue to go see DSB live, they're darn good! Also, being I'm usually more a fan of any of my favorite bands' deeper cuts than their commercial hits, and am getting pretty sick of hearing at least a good half of the songs in the dirty dozen. I looooove that I get to hear more of the rare gems in Journey's catalogue that I like alot more at a DSB concert. Not to mention Juan's got a killer voice and is very close to SP's unique delivery..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnmt_IWo13E

So this guy thinks 2 guys make a bunch?

That was absolute garbage / bullshit, from another person who would enjoy being an authority, but obviously, is not. The writer is a fucking douche bag and if questioned in depth would have no clue. I can't even classify this guy as a loon. He's just an inept idiot. I can't stand incompetence!

All true... except from the perspective of the lay-Journey fan... what he says is also likely true.

Well, the guy lost all credibility when he makes it sound as if Cain wasn't in the band for DSB/the big era.

I do agree with him, however, that seeing a great Journey tribute band is way more fun at this point. You hear a lot more songs, the mix isn't fucked beyond belief, and you don't have to endure guitar solos better suited to a Dream Theater show.

When one of the 2 guys is the original vocalist I'd say it makes it a bunch.

I just don't get the constant slamming of Arnel. Nor do I hear the diction issues. I do when he speaks, but not when he's singing. He's certainly easier to understand than SP... who has apparently become mute. I'm not going to get nasty with her, nor have I (have I?- if so I don't remember- I just don't agree with her constant defending of the schnozz - so what?).

Seen a lot of tribute bands and sure some of them are fun and some are funnier than others.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsokbuFj ... re=related
But on a serious note:Are we paying tribute to just one guy who was part of a whole or do we love the music that was created by the complete band and give those remaining members who still perform their due?

Then you should probably roll those eyeballs over to a post that is slamming
AP and/or his diction, because I think you just saw MG and landed here in error!!!

You kill me....you really do.

You can't understand why someone does not hear what you hear...it's a personal opinion....for SOME of us there is
diction issues, lyrics that are not remembered and sound quality generally sucks. How that is slamming Arnel?

Well said.
But both 'sides' would do well to remember that this phenomenon goes all ways.... for those who hear problems with Arnel, there are those who hear problems with Perry, Soto, Augeri, and so forth.

While I do agree w/you ...my comment was referring to the sound issues.
In my comments pertaining to the show I attended, I stated ...I don't know
how anyone even knows if AP sang the right words or Neal's solos
were entirely too long ...the sound was so bad that I could not
make out anything in particular. I'm almost positive I didn't blame the sound
issues on AP ...I don't even know who makes these decisions ...delusional!!

"For some of us there IS diction issues" - with a sentence like that, you're worried about diction? ;)

Ah! wait a sec? Then MGs quote was about the SOUND? I thought it was the typical ragging about diction. MY MISTAKE. Apologies all around. Seriously.

Just looked up and saw your post MG that you posted after me. Sorry.

Hey, I apologized for jumping on MG. The grammar thing was just a joke. I couldn't help myself.
I agree with you that we hear what we hear, totally. HOWEVER, so many throw everything through the SP filter and you're huge with that Portland. Simply because he's NOT Perry, you hear these MINUTE diction issues. The guy's diction problem is minimal at best (talking about singing here, not his local accent). I think a lot of people (you included) just cannot stand that the guy is out there doing what he's doing with Journey. Some see it as some kind of sacrilegious act. They'll gripe about things simply because he's not "THE" Mr. P, but the new, littler Mr. p. No need to get into this. I've said this all a bazillion times. I read MG's post incorrectly. I will tell Arnel how much the diction issues but you when I meet him tomorrow night.

Bry, you are assuming other peoples thoughts there. I don't think that is the case for the most part. For some people, he just simply doesn't do it for them. I think he's a great singer, nice guy, etc. But there is just something missing in his delivery that I require, it has nothing to do with diction or his nationality at all. And I'm not sure what his influences are, but IMO, Perry and Soto both have that R&B rock influenced vocal delivery. Ya either got it or ya don't. It's organic, not something that is learned. That's why I'm pretty much just indifferent with Journey when IMO the LS doesn't possess those qualities. As for frontman, I don't think he's bad and seems to be getting better........and following Soto, who excells at it, can't be an easy feat........there has to be a certain amount of confidence and polish to pull off being a great frontman and make it look natural not phony/dorky.

Actually I can't stand you....I am fine with AP.

I just posted in another thread that for "ME" I don't get the frontman vibe from AP at all. I just don't and for me the issues with
diction do play into how "I" view his performances.

It's not that way with some other bands...I loved DLR and I loved Sammy....and for me Kelly is really doing a great job in Foreigner....so I guess I can like someone else as a frontman of a well established rock band.

As far as you meeting AP...that's great! Maybe some of his charm might rub off if you stand close enough!
