Original Sequencing of Frontiers?

Postby Toph » Sat Dec 03, 2011 1:29 pm

Was the sequencing of the original Frontiers (with OTY and ATL) the following?

Side One
Seperate Ways
Send Her My Love
Chain Reaction
After The Fall
Faithfully

Side Two
Edge Of The Blade
Only The Young
Ask The Lonely
Frontiers
Rubicon

All I can say is what a missed opportunity....how awesome would that album have been with those two songs in place of the crappy Back Talk and Troubled Child.....

I prefer the album the way it was originally released. I'll take "Back Talk" and "Troubled Child" over the other two. That's not to say that I don't love "Only The Young" and "Ask The Lonely," I do love them. But I prefer "Back Talk" and "Troubled Child."

Now, that's perfect sequencing!

If Only the Young was on Frontiers along with Ask the Lonely it would've been #1 and may have sold close to 7.5 million here in the U.S. wonder how many copies of the Vision Quest Soundtrack sold due to that song.

I think troubled child is an awesome song. I wish they had done that one live at some point, but it's probably a tough one to do.

Troubled Child's a decent tune, but it's no ATL or OTY.

Back Talk is objectively a horrendous song. Embarrassing, in fact.

"Back Talk" is one of those examples of Journey trying way too hard to rock harder and failing miserably. The only part of the song I really enjoy is Smitty's great drumming and Perry's vocals at the end of the song. But Frontiers and TC really shine on what I think is one of the best "Side 2s" ever put on an album.

If ATL and OTY were on that album, pretty near perfect.

I must say, put me in the camp that really digs Troubled Child. I LOVE that song! But, I also agree about Back Talk, I just don't really get that song at all...doesn't seem to fit the album. If they had at least added either Only The Young or Ask the Lonely, I think Frontiers would have been just as big (if not bigger) than Escape.

Just a collosal missed opportunity. "Frontiers" is already Journey's best album, but with the original sequencing, it would be untouchable in the annals of AOR. Sequencing can make or break a record.

Really like TC. Backtalk was SS's baby and I could take it of leave it. Love ATL. I always thought OTY was a decent tune, but not the smash that some here make it out to be.

I can fully respect the drumming in Back Talk, and I believe it ended up on the album to give Smith writting credit on the record. But honestly, it just doesn't fit on that record as a Journey song. Troubled Child is... THE... most under-rated cut on that album. An amazing song vocally and sonically. I would agree with Only the Young and Ask The Lonely this album would have totally kicked more ass than it did, but at least we got those two songs in other releases. Sequencing is certainly important, when you make your own compilation you can't just throw 15 or so of a bands best songs on it in any old order, you still have to sequence them for the right flow and vibe from the songs. :)
